Japanese patrol boats are much faster than the old Chinese fishing trawler. They could have evaded or move away. Instead they cut into its path and stopped at a relatively short distance to deliberately cause a small collison and then esculated the event.

In the first strike on this clip, the Chinese vessel could have easily turned to starboard to have avoided the Japanese ship; instead, it chose to steer INTO the cutter. I can assure you, a ship of the size of the Japanse patrol craft does not have the ability to stop on a dime; this was a clear act of agression on the part of the Chinese captain.
