Who remembers the Emerald Centre in Hammersmith. Giles Peterson and his crew. I was the cloakroom girl... yee ha and I wanted Milton McAlpine soooooo bad.... yum
funkymartyn you should check out shiftless shuffle jazz fusion hard dance events once monthly o bar soho london. At the last event the legendary Horsehoe djs Colin Parnell and Boo played
I too used to secretly practice these moves at home but couldn´t buss em in the clubs in manchester back then not with Footpatrol, The fusion fanatics Old trafford and other dope crews around...this is how we used to dance to house music Pre ACIIIIIIID days remember.......
Jerry is the man, always has been always will be - just amazing, iv said it before but ill say it again - all these brothers should be well famous -original uk black culture at its best,
i was at hounslow college in west london with garys brother adrian - man i had idj at our summer party in 1987. these guys inspired us younguns we go camden dingwalls and electirc ballroom - for dance clashes
im almost 40 now but can still burn any mofo off the dance floor thanks to idj
Am a jazz man from back in the day!! still have my spate's £29.99 shelley.lol....love this video 1st time i was it and thank god for "youtube" still have not beable to find the jazz track used for this video? Really miss them days going to clubs and partys we were so "Different" girls loved it? sharp suits hats and a dance style that not a lot of people could do? YO!! Poctave i remember you guys...
Just found my old spats, my lovely mum bought em me when visiting London back in 88 or so. To scared to put em on in case im inspired to bust a move lol
We were skinny asian kids from Rochdale and I cant tell you how these guys inspired us, we had to goto local shitty clubs to show off our skills and get bear chucked at us! It was all worth it though, I wouldnt dare do some of the moves these days. PEACE to all the IDJ crew. Someone needs to document this slice of UK black culture quick, maybe it can ispire goodness in todays youth!
Man ! This was the best dancing there ever was ! Better than anything from America from the 30's & 40's. Better even than Hellazpopin'. I used to watch these guys awestruck. They pissed all over Michael Jackson. I asked my dance instructor how can you learn to dance like this & he said that it's not something you teach - you've either got it or you ain't. These guys should all be multi-millionaires with OBE's now but I wonder what they look like today ? Thanks a billion for posting !
Electric Ballroom friday night with Giles peterson( around 1982 onwards), Spats Saturday lunchtime (around 1981) Jaffas around the same time. Thank god I was around to see these moves live and shared the dancefloor with these guys
Dingwalls started with this then I must say the Hacienda in Manchester had battles too, with the local jazzters Foot Patrol bustin' moves on the floor on Wednesdays & Fridays
Electric Ballrooms every Friday...was there many times and seen lots of battles. Robin Jones 7, Bateria Nota 'Indipendiente' VOL III, Dom Ramaro 'Brun Blek Blu' Art Blakey 'Night in Tunisia 1979 version, 'Merry go round'can't remember artist(can someone let me know please)Dewery Redman 'unknown tongues'Baska & Skavelli and many more. I brought lot's of my records from the DJ in that room, still got them. 1982-85 best period 'I think' for this dance scene.
Brought back some great memories upstairs and downstairs. Shame things have turned tribal. Youth of today dont know how to behave. Man use to come from all over to sample the grooves. We'll never get them times back bro.
I recorded this decades ago and I'm totally stoked to see it up here. And by pure coincidence, I discovered this track on iTunes today by accident after many years of not knowing. It's "The Peanut Vendor" by Lalo Schifrin.
Dingwall's and Electric Ballroom in Camden, Cinecitta Roma, Dance Wicked at Astoria we used to try to bust IDJ moves in dance challenges. My bro bust his knee badly doing the american splits lol. Respect to IDJ !
My god - I remember taping this back in mid/late 80's off the TV. I wore that tape out practicing those knee spins. Fantastic stuff and still looks pin sharp today!
