As much as anything else, it was the subject matter of MIDNIGHT COWBOY (rape, male prostitution, homosexuality) that got it an "X" rating. When the ratings system was first devised, "X" was meant for films with serious adult subject matter, not just porn--but hard-care porn made it difficult for non-porn films to get into theaters.
