  • Wow what a couple of fun girls. I remember them from the 80s of course and the terrible news of Mel's death. Never seen them interviewed before - they seem like a couple of very down to earth London lasses.

  • This is how a london accent should sound like . Not like thery sound today

  • 22 ans déjà repose en paix Mélanie

  • Mel's laughter is so contagious

  • 70% the effect of sickness and diseases are from a bitter heart (unforgiveness), so don't let offenses cause by verbal abuse (humans) sink in your heart just let it go (forgive), you can't beat cancer by prescription pills from the doctor but start from forgiving yourself first so that you will be able to forgive others especially your parents and family. thanks

  • Mel was so adorable here. What a strong woman! And loving sister Kim would have done anything for her. When Mel wore a wig, Kim did too. In a later interview when Mel had little hair, Kim had cut her hair. They were such an inseparable team. I really love them both. I hope Kim is doing well now.

  • I'll be honest - I cried through the whole interview. I love Mel & Kim. They were a great team. And I only learned yesterday that Mel was one of my favorite girls from Mayfair and Players magazines (nudes). I just never out the two together. She was so beautiful and sexy. This video makes me very sad. She was so young and talented and I know that it really hurt Kim. It shows in later interviews with her. There will never be another like them and certainly isn't today. They were awesome! Luv 'em

  • Awww still makes me sad to think Mel ain't no longer with us.

  • So so tragic, I'll never forget when this news broke. And of course she never recovered, and died very soon afterwards. Such a brave girl, the 80s would not have been the same without her.

  • It was mels birthday on july 11th R.I.P Mel Thanks for being a part of my childhood x

  • the best shame they are no longer with us

  • Blimey those girls could sing, how the hell can anyone dislike this, have you no heart, R.I.P Mel,

  • she was so brave, so tragic. RIP Mel and thank you for your music and laughter xxx

  • aw, bless her. so young.

  • I always liked Kim in those tight jean, yummy.

  • Thanks so much for posting this interview on Youtube. I am so thrilled to see this old Wogan interview. I grew up in England loving Mel & Kim's music in the 80s. I have never seen this interview nor seen those two speaking in person. Hearing Mel speak, she sounded awesome with her sense of humour and that boisterous laugh of hers! Kim is fab too. Thanks again for sharing this!

  • mel looks like a fun and bubbly person rip mel all your fans miss you.i hope kim is ok

  • this kinda makes me so sad knowing the outcome

  • ahh what a shame they were cool.x

  • 2 fabulous ladys god bless xx

  • What is SAW?

  • @TheFever77 SAW stands for Stock Aitken & Waterman who are 3 guys who wrote & produced many songs in the 80's & 90's .

  • @naja46 Thanks, don't know why I didn't realise that lol. I think I watched this early in the morning

  • @TheFever77 No problem , I often have moments like that ! Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to you .

  • Is Mel wearing a wig?

  • i am filling up watching this

  • Never a SAW fan but loved these wee sweeties and remember this interview so well from my teenage years..especially the fact that Mel kept callingTerry Tel ;-) , so unaffected for the times. That's why I looked it up. Obviously I wasn't the only one who thought that, which I guess is why it's on here. God bless.

  • Thanks so much for posting.

  • This is the first time I've been able to watch this for a very long time . I still feel a twinge of sadness whenever I think about Mel :(

  • Mel died 9 months later :(

  • This interview always gets to me. It's so so sad. Mel & Kim were/are the best group to come out of the 80's.

  • I love their harmony. That was so good.

  • Great video, never realised just how well they could sing together and what a fantastic laugh Mel had :)

  • What a beautiful girl!!! I was a massive fan of mel and kim when i was in secondary school, me and friends would copy the dance routines at break times almost every day. Sadly missed, i feel like she is like one of my mates very natural and down to earth, typical cockney.

I remember seeing and interview with pete waterman and him talking about her and crying, he really loved them both!!

  • @facefavour

yes i know the interview he shakes his head says bothy Mel and Kim was like my daughters ....

  • Thank you so much for posting this! It's so sad... I'm a huge Mel & Kim fan.

  • 1:50 what was Mel saying, the joke??

  • I would like to say really Thank You to share this with all of us... I am a SAW fan since the earlier 80's and Mel & Kim were one of my favourite SAW Production... I really loved everything they did together and then Kim did during her solo career. Bless Melanie. We miss you!!! Ciao. Gianluca.

  • @DeejayAtWork And what a beautiful sense of humor she had. God bless her :)

  • Bless her heart, she was a wonderfull girl! and now a beautifull spirit!!

  • Normally I'm not moved when I hear about people dying. But this makes me cry. I think its coz they seem so down to earth

  • Same here! I just became a recent fan of Mel & Kim's music. "Respectable" has been playing in my head for over a week now! It's sad that Mel died. They both seem like wonderful people.

  • So sad! I actually cried watching this and thinking about Mel. She was taken from us way too young, and just thinking about what her sister must have gone through got the waterworks going... They were so close, and I can't imagine losing someone like that to cancer at 23. It was a tragedy.

  • aw bless ya mel

  • They really remind me of Alesha Dixon. Same bubbly spirit..their laugh...and looks! Can't belive its over 20 years.

  • Brave girl such a waste so young & after making music we all felt good dancing too back in the day bless her x

  • Cancer is an evil disease :-S

  • Remember seeing this first time round. And as a big fan was so shocked with the change in Mel's appearance from her treatment! But she still had that wonderful spirit of hers (and sense of humour) despite what was going on in her life! Loved seeing this again! RIP Mel x x x

  • "You'd done lots of things, what had you done?"

1:37 LOL look at her face :P we know what u mean wogan ;-)

  • smile then...everything,everything...

  • Mel totally reminds me of Aleshia Dixon to look at....and personality too!

  • thats what i thought too not that they really look alike but reminds me too

  • except she had talent

  • I remember Mel & Kim from the 80s and I loved to dance listening to their hit single, 'F.L.M. (Fun, Love and Money)' during their heyday. This song remains among my favourites.

I was shocked to hear that Mel had died, not by cancer but by pneumonia after she caught a bad cold during her ongoing treatment for cancer. It was so tragic that Mel died so young in her early twenties...now her star shines brightly in heaven, R.I.P. Melanie

  • what a lovely girl Mel was, what a great laugh! What a great role model she is for people. Me and my friends soo wanted to be Mel and Kim when we were young they were sooo cool. Mel is a great loss my she be singing and dancing for the lord. ( i bet hes enjoing it) RIP mel.

i hpoe i meet you in the next life so we can party and laugh. xxx

  • for someone who was going through the pain of cancer, mel was brill and so was kim, their dance routine timings were spot on - they are both sadly missed, such a lovely bubbly lady - why does it happen to the good/talented ones ? ?

  • @crilin25 Cos she was having treatment 4 her cancer. What a stupid, nasty comment 2 make.

  • @perky26hughes OH I TOUGHT SHE WAS PREGNANT AT THE TIME

  • what a dirty laugh! :D

  • I liked the way terry played the best bits of this interview showing Mel laughing she was so bubbly and i cryed buckets when she died.

many thanks mel you were great

  • I will be visiting Melanie's grave in Finchley and leaving flowers in about 4 weeks time when I'm home. Any messages, leave your name on here and I'll write them on my card from you all. XXX

  • would love to know the name of the cancer documentary

  • it was a Stars and Their Lives programme. It had a subtitle, The Big C I think it was.

  • I live in finchley and i would like to go can you remember the exact location within the cemetery( camden side or islington side) as finchley is quite big thanks ps hope your visit went ok

  • i think is the central alley is quiet a pretty one with blue or azur stones on top of it

  • melanie seems so fun! Very sad that she died, they also sing really well too, never knew that.

Reminds you a bit of Jade Goody?

  • Apart from the fact Melanie was gorgeous and talented. I don't mean to speak bad of Jade but not one of the £8million she made was down to any talent. It was the shrude management and P.R. of Max Clifford.

  • Hey Mel & Kim fans and people with an interest and support in cancer and it's research...there's an in-depth documentary on Channel 4 tonight from 9pm-10pm with 20 minutes of it dedicated to Mel's battle with cancer, her families support & grief afterwards, many interviews with Kim & an insight into why she was cruelly taken by a common cold. The rest of the programme contains Dusty Springfield's and Wendy Richard's battles with cancer plus other celebrities who have survived the evil disease.

  • what's it called? Can I watch it online? I live in Russia, but I'd find it interesting. thanks

  • I work in Spain so watched it on digital UK television. I think you can download it off the charity's official website, I'll check if it's up yet. It was very sad. The insight to Dusty's lonely but chosen way of passing away is very sad.

  • i went there and put white roses upon the grave but i also want to know about the 20mn programmewould love to see it or download it

  • It's a 1 hour programme in the Stars and Their Lives series, it's not up on the website of the cancer charity that was involved in the making of it, they said they'll be putting excerpts up and not the whole programme so when they do, I'll put a link up. In the meantime, I'll contact a friend who recorded it so it can be put on here.

  • The interview Kim did on the Trisha Goddard show a few years ago told a bit of the story. Nobody knew she wasn't getting any better until 2 years into her treatment which was the 2nd half of 1989. But Mel stayed the trooper right until the very end. They all thought she was gonna recover before this time.

  • i always been a big fan of mel and kim... i honestly thought they werent talentd just a product of the stock waterman Factory...This interview just made me realize what a waste of talent these beautiful girls were...God bless their souls LOve you mel and kim forever

  • and this interview confirms they can sing

  • Mel's laugh is precious! So contagious!

    I love it!

Bless her heart. I think she proved in this interview that she was a very, very strong-willed young woman through tragedy. She's an angel watching over her family, now.

  • Bless her

  • im sorry to ask I love mel and kim still i wonder when having cancer and goin through therapy and all does this mean you're near the end when you are that level as mel was on here

  • Mel wasn't near the end...it was just awful timing. She had a large cancerous tumour in her liver at the age of just 19 (1985) which was removed. Then shortly after they became huge in 1987, she was diagnosed with secondries in her spine. She had fought this fucking bastard of a disease twice and was recovering, she was more than halfway to good health but the chemotherapy attacks your immune system and she couldn't fight a common cold which turned into pneumonia. It was this that killed her.

  • thank you for that it still hurts to hear that tho...

  • Ock the poor wee thing. You'd never think, by this interview, she was near the end. So happy and full of life, such a terrible shame.

  • She never knew she was near the end. As far as she was concerned she had beaten the cancer. She had fought it. twice. But the chemotherapy made her immune system so weak she was unabl to shake off a common cold and it went to her lungs. It was pneumonia that killed her. Such injustice.

  • No, I agree. The tragic thing is, that as things unfolded she was near the end. It's a son of a bitch, battling cancer like that to then be taken by pneumonia.

  • She was a very strong person to get rid of it twice. All her family couldn't help being pessimistic assuming she would die. The last time we saw her in November 1989 less than 2 mths before she was to die, she looked great and was raring to go and said the new Mel & Kim album was almost finished and would be out in the new year. So surprises all round in the end.

  • The official story is that it was pneumonia that killed her, but Kim said in a Trisha interview in 2005 that she knew Mel was going to die "2 years in" (presumably mid 1989). She also said in a songwriting conference in London last year that Mel lost her battle with cancer, so she still had cancer when she died, just it was pneumonia that killed her. Very sad story either way.

  • I miss Mel & Kim!! :o(

  • i love mel's laughter.....greatt o see how she still let herself lies laughs and all that should be how we have to be cause somehow, someway we're all goin the same way so very good example mel lovely live duo

  • Thanks for uploading this rare clip.

Sad yet uplifting seeing Mel like that. I had no idea she had such a strong character.

    Thanks.

  • I've always been a fan of Mel & Kim, mainly because my dad played "FLM" SO much that the record wore out, lol.Mel was such a beautiful young woman! So down to earth & bubbly...just keepin' it real & bein' true to herself!Such a tragic loss to music & above all to her family & friends!Although we didn't know her on a personal level...you watch this interview & you can feel her warmth & how genuine she was! Both such lovely girls...and SO SO brave! RIP Mel & god bless darlin'! -x-

  • you can say that again buddy...

  • So so sad. Legands of the british pop, dance scene in the 80's.

Mel is so bubbaly and very brave. I am sure that inside she knows the truth of her condition.

  • Mel was so lovely...great smile and always laughing....she's still missed...Hope Kim is well..xxx

  • God rest her beautiful soul. Mel & Kim Forever

  • i agree strong as hell.I always think of that when i see these on here. I love their accent though, you kind of forget

  • When Mel died I was 12,I was secretly very upset because I had loved Mel and Kim when I was younger.Such a sad sad story.Rest in peace forever Mel.

  • mel and kim where bloody great, so sad to watch this video, realy sad

  • mel died in 1990, a pretty young lady, so sad she died , kim was pretty aswell, mel must have been scared caused i would have been,

  • Even to this day I still get a little sad about Mel's death. I loved Mel&Kim, I was in their fanclub at the time of the news. RIP!

  • I'm surprised at how good they were live--poor Mel, they must have had her on some kind of steriod as part of her chemo, her face is so swollen. So sad.

  • she put on weight because of steroids yes. to build up her body/immune system to prepare for the chemotherapy which waswhat killed her because it destroyed her immune system whilst zapping the cancer. She had fought the cancer. It was pneumonia that killed her.

  • Also Mel & Alesha Dixon are very similar to me... if they make a drama [or even musical!] about them she has to be cast...

  • You know what i have always thought the exact same thing...very similar!

  • damn it made me sad

i wish there was no death

    at least her music remains

  • Bless Mel's soul- such an inspiration, giggling and singing through all this tragedy...

  • The epitome of the 80s! A fabulous pop act. Its so sad that Mel passed on.

  • when mel laughed, everyone around her laughed too. very sad that she is so full of hopes for the future, and talking about the album she never got to record. RIP MEL and lots of love to kim

  • So sad about Mel.... What a great fun laugh that she had, it seemed to make everyone around laugh with her.

    Luv to you Mel.

  • Wow!!! They were such a laugh! So fun loving and whitty. And Mel, such a lively, bubbly person! Its hard to understand how someone so bright and so strong willed can just be taken away from us like that. I just cant imagine a girl like her ever dying. Wherever she is, I hope she's happy and shining like she always did. We miss you and remember you Mel. xx

  • If my memories serve me right about this interview,Wogan asks about the new album and the fact they'd been writing tracks for it.The girls break into the verse of a new,but un-named song..which ended up being "If You Cared" on Kim's solo album.

Having listened recently again to stuff on Kim's album, you get an idea of what a second or even 3rd M&K album would have sounded like,as most of the tracks were co-wrote by the girls.

Mel is still sadly missed..but her star still shines bright!

  • Yes the doc talks and both girl listen to him and then terry says not everyone is up beat like mel or has a family like mel..then he wishes them well.....

  • god this has made me cry kim was just the most lovely girl and mel bless ya your little heart looking down at as all singing your hart out with everyone up there.when its my turn to go we are going to have a right laugh love you both god bless .xxxx

  • What a great interview. So strange and sad to see Melanie talking about that she is not going to die. And that she isn't here now anymore. I was always such a fan of them. The best S.A.W. act ever! Also very good singing they do. I would have loved to see them perform live versions of their 'Debut Album' FLM. Especially songs like 'More than words can say' and 'Feel a whole lot better'.

  • I remember crying as a kid when I watched this!! Miss Mel so much!! :o(

  • I have waited twenty years to see this as I missed it when it was on. Thank u so much!! Made me cry!

    xx

  • I was wondering what date this show was on. I've found out that European Cancer Week 1988 took place in the first week of May, so this interview must have been at the end of April 1988. Since Wogan was on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, this interview must have been on 25th, 27th, or 29th April 1988.

  • Thanks for this video, NeuxsTM - is there any chance of seeing the rest of the interview? I know it's mainly with the doctor guy but it would still be interesting to see. Thanks in advance.

  • Thanks for your comments, everyone! :)

A couple of years ago, a friend sent me this video.

Unfortunately, this is all I've got.

Have you ever seen the 2nd part, ajs41?

Maybe someone's got the complete video...

Anyway, thanks for the information about the possible date of this show.

I wonder if there's a video of the European Cancer week 1988 available. ;)

  • i love the part when they're laughing...mel and kim how wonderful..lovely live voices..and also a great great positive attitude from both specially mel.

  • I wish Mel had been able to have today's improved treatment for cancer rather than the 1980s version.

  • what a great example....positivity,laughs... no wonder kim was more than hurt specially when she knew what was goin to happen...Kim is very brave as well as their mum...love them both and mel was still is my fav'...wonderful voices...Out of sight never out of mind

  • Thanks so much for posting this, I've wanted to see it for ages!

  • It is so tragic to see this after all these years. Mel seems & looks so different there. Both beautiful and talented girls!! And never knew they sound that good live!!!
