  • @andreasnorup From what I've heard, the first line formed a shield wall. (That's why the shields were so big.) And the guys behind them had spears and axed and just killed away. Quite simple, and effective.

  • Guy with the helmet won at 0:09. Without legs you can't stand :P

  • @tullyDT . i agreed abut dat. we (means mee) are not stupid . and we was newer it. whye rush strait in to battle when the odds an upon the emeny and the skill ar on your hands? self i whud waited untill dawn and send perhaps half of my mens behind the emeny and then strike from the otherside. dat whud mean the emeny cant retreat the other way. and abut the samurai. nomatter how skilld a viking ewer whud be so whuld he allways lose agenst a samurai. if he not had extremly mutch luck.

  • hmm i really heard that thump on his arm

  • both of them dont know what they are doing and how to fight

  • haha...

  • Spartans were the best...

people in the old days were so much stronger.. in fact, with all this tec, i bet we'll get physically weaker over the years lol

  • the one in the hood cheated. he got the back of his knee slashed out

  • i agree there isnt any agression or fury here that we norsemen were/are known for this vid was a waste of my time thor would be rolling if he saw this vid

  • Most experts agree that vikings didn't run into screaming and swinging wildly all that would do is get you tired and killed.

Evidence points that they used finesse in their fighting techniques and that their battles played out more strategically. It's most likely that they circled, moved in made a few attacks broke off then moved back in and made another attempt tats what this video is depicting.

But if your prefer the stereotype rather than a skilled fighter who rivalled a samuai your loss

  • yes, your completely right

  • @tullyDT Sorry, VIkings didn't rival samurai. Most weren't all that skilled, surprise and mobility were their main tactics. They were NOT expert soldiers, they were mostly farmers and others who basically had a get rich quick scheme...Show up suddenly in a village, destroy, burn, grab anything valuable, leave. Once they started facing large armies from the rest of Europe they lost consistently.

  • @purplesquirrl Yes they were farmers during the summer season bit they did train in armed combat from an early age they were a warrior society armed combat was at the heart of their religion and culture. What you are describing is more akin to a Saxon army where every farmer was obliged to grab what ever weapon he had available and make up an ad-hock army to fight for their king/lord on short notice

  • continuing from my first post

They never fought large organised armies by the time proper armies showed up in the medieval period in Europe the vikings had integrated into the countries they had settled in, the reduction in their raiding activities is a result of the spread of Christianity to Scandinavia.

  • For the time viking Armour and weaponry were some of the best in Europe and their is plenty of literary evidence from episodes like battle of Clontarf and other battles over territory which they invaded and settled in the British Isles where they successfully took and defended land from the native peoples that shows that they were competent warriors and well capable of waging war

  • @purplesquirrl Three words for you... Battle of Falford. 1066 between the Norwejian vikings and the northern English. The vikings were outnumbered, and yet slaughtered nearly the entire English army in straight shieldwall combat. In fact, accounts of the battle suggest that the Vikings were far superior combatants than the English. You tell me that's not skilled. If that wasn't enough, you ever heard of the Varangian Guard?

  • @TheodricLives Yes, the vikings did win some battles, but they lost many more. They were pillagers who were extremely good at what they did, but not expert soldiers. That being said, the Varangian Guard are an exception, and in my mind were among the greatest warriors the world has ever seen; the problem is most vikings weren't varangians, or anything close. And I will admit without any reservation, the vikings were much better than the English, I admire German armies much more than the English.

  • @purplesquirrl Now we have something we can agree on. Hail Germany!

  • @purplesquirrl Well the German armies didn't take over England. The Norwegians en Danes did. Later the Normans (mixed Franks, Viking offsprings) really took over England en frankly there offsping are still there.

  • @tullyDT maybe the common norseman. But you can't forget berserkers. And before you discount them as a myth do some research.

  • @skjaldulfr What we know about berserkers is speculative at best all there is to go on is accounts given in sagas which should be regarded with caution. My own theory is that some vikings may have eaten narcotic mushrooms which would have inhibited their senses. There is more evidence to suggest tactical fighting employed by vikings than there is for blind berserker charges as the staple of viking warfare. The berserker seems to be more of an exception to the rule rather than common place.

  • @tullyDT As a matter of fact, there is actually strong evidence that vikings, when advancing in force, used the shield wall (likely learned from watching or fighting against Romans centuries earlier).

  • @tullyDT The majority of skeletons of Vikings who died in battle had damage to the head or legs. This showed they would feint some of their attacks. They would also use their shields in combination with attacks to keep their opponents' shields out of the way.

  • @tullyDT they fought in shields walls with their shields interlocked and supporting the man next to him unless it was in single combat which is quite clearly the case here. i think re-enactors probably know a bit more about danish/norse/saxon combat than some youtube expert such as yourself

  • @swanyAJ I don't see how his statement contradicts the video, jackass.

  • @tullyDT What do you mean rivaled the samurai? The only thing a viking has that threatens a late period samurai is his shield.

  • @tullyDT And chainmail, it stops slashes

  • hehehe

  • everybody knows that after viking age ,when the viking were known as all pirates of the baltic sea ,there is no other warriors going to valhalla than Polish, all east (Russia,Bialorus,Ukraine),and few Germans .

Odin dont want people with no skills and heart !

  • what the hell is this, re-enactors should be actual skilled fighters just with blunt weapons. if our ancestors could see this today.......what pussies. get hurt dammit, fight with honour and take a week off to recover from some bruises.

hah mix it up a bit, get the pansy to fight a real blooded berserkir from the mental asylum as a practical joke on the re-enactor hahah DANELAW RULE ALL! hej hej all.

  • we from Norway to, not the russians

  • haha russians are not real vikings... we frome swe ARE!

  • First Vikings were from Norway. Than they were trained in Sweden, Danemark, Iceland, Russia, Poland, Germany. They were warriors ut also a great traders, that's why they lived in so many places.

  • Scandinavia were the Countrys who had Vikings, They later went our around the World, The Swedes in the East and middleeast, The Danes in England and The Norwegians around the English islands.

  • @joonte1010 yeah but sometimes you're just not trying to be viking but saxon or frisian or something and just get mistaken by people , its the same culture anyhow

  • Nice kick there

  • Ikke so våske
