Recently our government instituted a law whereby retailers charge $0.05 per bags across the city and I have to say I've noticed a lot more people bringing their own bags to the market/shop, etc. Perhaps California can do the same if they haven't already?

The only way to clean the Bay is to start packaging foods, drinks, cleaners and everything else in reusable containers and bags. Maybe put a 5 cent refund on all these containers. We here in Ireland used to have a ridiculous amount of plastic bag wast littering our rivers, coastline etc. But ever since the Gov put a 15c tax (instead of being free) on each bag @ the supermarket a few years ago, the results have actually been amazing. Plastic bags can easily "float" away, like they did in the video and end up in the water.
People often don't recycle them because they have to be recycled in bulk.
Paper bags take 10% more energy to make than plastic bags.
Canvas and reusable bags are the way to go.

Bay area freeways are the worst in the nation for this type of litter and I believe it's due to the influx of new comers that have always done it in their native countries and continue the practice once they arrive here.There should be a campaign in all languages that can help this situation.

The only way to clean the Bay is to start packaging foods, drinks, cleaners and everything else in reusable containers and bags. Maybe put a 5 cent refund on all these containers. At the grocery store or retail stores offer those cloth bags for less than what they want now or even free? Also we need to teach kids to stop throwing their garbage every where! Everyday I have to go out and pick up liter off of my damn lawn! Damn high school kids!

arkmanoah the problem is the bag. what eats the plastic after we are done with it. Nothing. sure you can keep making something out of it but sooner or later it will end up in a land fill. Hemp is one of the best bags around. It does not kill trees the seeds can feed birds and people.you can make close and other stuff people need. and in the end they all can be composted or if foe gotten in nature well snails and other animals can eat them.

I love plastic bags... They make carrying my groceries to the car easy.. Then I use them to clean up my dogs shit... Nice! I would never throw a plastic bag into the water... But I would throw a condom into the toilet... Is that bad for the environment??

i think they should just hire more ppl to work on removing the bags,should they have a filter on the drain where they dump all the waste into the bay? if they actually filtered what the city was dumping,there wouldnt be as much plastic bags in there anyways, you cant tell 500,000+ to stop litering,its just not gona happen.

We here in Ireland used to have a ridiculous amount of plastic bag wast littering our rivers, coastline etc. But ever since the Gov put a 15c tax (instead of being free) on each bag @ the supermarket a few years ago, the results have actually been amazing. I don't think i've noticed much if any plastic bags rubbish in the last 5 years. U should try something similar. It really works

@arkmanoah, the problem may not be the bag, but the truth is that there are far too may irresponsible people handling the oh so innocent bag and the problem is created nonetheless. San Francisco is the first city to nip that problem in the bud in the U.S. No plastic bags allowed by shops, so less people can be irresponsible. Easy, Now lets stop making them for they will consume a lessor amount of petroleum in the process. Can we handle that?
