  • Dry ice is frozen CO2. When dry ice sublimates, it turns directly into its gas (CO2). Fire needs oxygen to burn. When you shoot a jet of CO2 at it, it no longer has a sustainable source of oxygen and it is put out. [This is how some fire extinguishers work.]

  • Steve why did you change the channel i liked it before :C

  • why not use siran wrap instead of a zip lock bag

  • @0909rayman I'm thinking that the bag is probably stronger, but I'm not sure.

  • Guys. if you wanna do more powerfull launchings, take a rubber band and wrap it so that it sits on the plastic bag and doesnt touch the hole where the smoke is supposed to come out. that way when you pull the rubber band back at the plastic bag and release it it gives insane power and you can shoot even further ^^ have fun :D

  • I would like to say something that is almost utterly irrelevant to this. *Random?*

    Step:

    1) Get a cardboard cylinder from the inside of a toilet paper roll.

    2) Snip off the mouth of the balloon and wrap it around the base of the cardboard.

    3) Wrap a rubber band around the balloon to keep it secured.

    4) Drop a penny into the cylindrical cardboard and place your index finger and thumb onto the coin through the balloon.

    5) Pull the balloon outwards with the coin in between your fingers.

    6) Release.

  • @TboneIsRogue Do you have a video for that? because I can't imagine it.

  • awesome

  • If you look closely at 0:49, you can see that the orange letters spell science.

  • yeh cause i have dry ice just laying around anywhere.

  • can you cut difrent shapes into the cup and if so will it make that shape

  • wow very awsome i want to do it.......

  • use a balloon...

  • great..... congratulations my friend..

  • I think cuz the hole shapes the smoke when u tap the back

  • that is awesome

  • how do you get dry ice? D: i tried to make it with a type d Co2 fire extinguisher but all i had was yellow puff

  • @WinnSkin You can buy dry ice at most grocery stores, you just need to be 18 or older to purchase.

  • @SteveSpanglerScience my mom tried to buy them at 4 grocery store but they dont sell em :P :(

  • @SteveSpanglerScience can you tell me what would happen if i were to put a dry ice pellet in a cup of soda, that is not sealed?

  • @WinnSkin it fizzes up and kinda explodes we did that at in my class

  • the breeze

  • Pressure and equalibrium ;-)

  • i'm 16 and watching this like a 6yo. smiling and fun in front of my computer

  • you spelled science in the orange letters lol

  • in the secert message it says science

  • Bye mum, I'm going to go to my local store and buy liquid ice! - lol...

  • can i do a Bazooka out of it?

  • i luv to make this

  • You used this on ellen is it ? :D

  • Why do I keep watching these? I have a chem final today

  • I would imagine to work better with a balloon instead of a ziplock bag. Is this true?

  • aww I just made this anits awsom plz reply thx

  • ....screw laser-tag...DRY-ICE-SMOKE-RING-TAG FTW >:O

  • Ah ha now I can signal people in the woods!

  • Go Big Or Go make Instasnow!!

  • Isn't that the same box cutter that Gus used to slit that guy's throat in breaking bad?

  • Why didnt you guys use mentos and coke to put out a forest fire? -_-

  • dry ice gun

  • what is the song title of the jazzy background?

  • @Libed24 it's probably one of the sound samples like the one he uses for the Sick Science or an intro for a clip

  • where can i get dry ice in indiana?

  • @TheWaewert i live in indiana :O

  • Why Ziploc bags? plastic wrap is cheaper, right?

  • AWESOME

  • where can i buy dry ice?

  • @100CookiesAREawesome any major retailer at least in the us yea you just have to ask and you have to be of legal age 18 or older

  • STEVE WHATS THE NAME OF THE MUSIC?

  • u did this on the evel show

  • NO! i want the "do de do de do de do de do de do de do de do de do de do de do de do de do de do" music!!!!!!

  • Aweeeesommmeeee!!!! How u manage to do it with a cannon, i dont know. ;-)

  • Where can you get Dry Ice?

  • toroidal vortexes are self perpetuating when created properly and will travel for long distances the motion of the air around the vortex will blow out the candle when it is reached. the fact that the gas is c02 is almost irrelevant.

  • flames can not burn in nitrogen and need oxygen when the air in replaced with the nitrogen the nitrogen puts the flame out but in this demonstration the rings where quiet shitty and was most likely just from the rapid air flow. :D

  • @randyrox69 actually the answer is rapid air flow. It had nothing to do with Nitrogen or Oxygen. You don't need dry ice to put the flame out.

  • @Stevespanglerscience why do you always use sick science now

  • @re5ruless If you're looking for more Steve Spangler videos check out our other youtube channel 'Spangler Science TV.'

  • @randyrox69 It's Dry ice. Not Liuquid Nitrogen. Next time try to know what you are talking about.

  • @randyrox69 Dry Ice is made out of carbon dioxide...

  • @randyrox69 It's dry ice, not liquid nitrogen XD Dry ice is carbon dioxide lols

  • @randyrox69 OHHHHH SNAP! you just got told!

  • @randyrox69 Where did nitrogen come from?

  • @randyrox69 im pretty sure he ment comment on the smoke rings not the candle extinguishing :P

  • awsome!!!

  • this sounds like elevator music

  • Dry ice is extremely cold, and smokes even without water. But when you add water it may feel warm to us but to dry ice it is EXTREMELY hot, releasing water vapor quickly, and when you snap the plastic bag it disturbs the air creating a wave of air coming from the hole.

  • lol at 0:48 it spells science with all the orange colors

  • @DemonHunter2k7 Lol, u just realized that? They've been doing it for months. LOL

  • Dry ice a very cold substance around about -80°C water however is normally over 1°C as soon the water reacts with the dry ice it sublimes making lots 'smoke' inside the plastic cup. However as well as the gas inside the cup caused by the water reacting with the dry ice there is also air that layer of air is pushed by the remains of the zip lock bag, along with the 'smoke',gas and air inside the cup the carved ''O'' in the cup also causes the smoke, gas and, air to emit out of the cup as an 'O'

  • @reidn010 There is no reaction between the water and the dry ice. The water simply speeds up the phase change (sublimation) of the dry ice. The water does, however, add a tiny bit of moisture to the system. The moisture condenses (another phase change) to fog because of the low temperature, which allows us to see the "smoke", which is CO2 and colorless.

  • The circly clouds remind me of those pipes peole use to use. :3

  • Ya i'll just go ahead and get the dry ice from my freezer

  • *shapes

  • U can cut out diffirent spap

  • @bander2626 you can get them at an ice cream factory or an ice factory mjust look it up

  • where do i get the dry ice?

  • cool

  • Aww, this is the mini one! So much better :) Now I don't have to cut open my garbage cans >>

  • Awesome !!! I go try now !!!!!!! Really cool :)

  • Oh I'm good...

  • The dry ice and water mixes together and create a pressurized substance known as liquid oxygen. because of the warm air the mist is not anxious to leave the container until it is introduced to the additional pressure caused by the impact of your finger against the plastic cover and creates and equal and even kinedic amount of thrust vacating the pressurized area insid the cup. Simply put, Your finger reduced the area inside instantaneously by pushing the plastic inward eliminating room for mist.

  • i dont f ing no.

  • Go to walmart for dry ice

  • cool

  • that is cool

  • Kinda reminds me of Alice in Wonderland

  • kewl i do the same kind of thing underwater

  • where can i get dry ice from

  • i shuld try dht but i dnt no where to get dry ice

  • @ceceunity you should also try spelling correctly.

  • ohh man theres new music.. i liked the old music better xD

  • You can get it in some stores if you just ask for it.

  • where do i get dry ice?

  • @cng42300 i think u can get it at any supermarket but u gotta ask for it cause its in the back.

  • is dry ice the same thing as regular ice and if not where can i get dry ice???

  • @cng42300 Dry ice is the result of frozen solid carbon dioxide. Regular ice is a result of frozen solid water. They are two different materials. In addition, because of the freezing point of water and carbon dioxide, dry ice (frozen carbon dioxide) is much, much colder than regular ice.

  • @cng42300 no dry ice is frozen carbon dioxide and you get get it at most grocery stores but you have to ask for it also DO NOT TOUCH IT WITH YOUR BARE HANDS dry ice is so cold you can get frosbite within a few seconds but with proper safety, dry ice can be fun and exciting also if you want to have a bubbly mess put dry ice in a plastic cup (cuz it will break glass) and add some dish soap and warm water

  • saw this on ellen but with the garbage can and smoke. hella fun to make!

  • Mybe there was a dry ice in BLUE CATERPILLAR pipe :D

  • well water accelerates the melting of dried ice the fog comes out of the hole. It's an O because falling gases will always take the shape of an O like falling water or raindrops

  • I just heard about Stevespanglerscience via the Point of Inquiry podcast. Very cool.

  • FIRST!

  • @monkeymauler1400 no youre not

  • @Stevespanglerscience is it okay if u shoot at at your skin?

  • @XxArmedGamerxX yes it's just vaporized carbon dioxide.

  • this is a vortex ring which can also be performed in water with just air by humans dolphins and whales. the vortex is created by the outter layer of gas in the cup moving faster than theinner layer of air. this circle is pushed out and spins becuase the air on the inside of the 'smoke rings' isnt moving. once the 'O' has reached the cut in the cup it is forced forward by your finger tapping the bag. this vortex carries on spinning until it is distroyed by a draft or all its kinetic energy (stops

  • :D!

  • i have seen it on ellen show

  • fun

  • 302nd Viewer!!!!!

  • Oh...that is cool!

  • This is fantastic!

  • much better then bill nye

  • where do you get dry ice??

  • @NRG2220 you can usually bye it at your local grocery store but you have to be 18

  • he makes science fun..not complicated

  • how it happens is.........MAGIC!!!

  • i have a theroy but it is hard to explain with words

  • I prefer the old music.

  • Sick science?

  • This song reminds me of Paris

  • Yeah... about that. Going to have a bit of trouble cutting out a perfect circle!! ahaha

  • that is awesome!!!

  • WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • awesome!

  • on how u think what happens? The dry ice sublimates immediately as soon as it hits a warm environment, and the circle in the cup causes the gas to come out in streams of perfect circles... the Little O's u see.

  • @colinprprpr Don't forget the donut hole!

  • fav science guy

  • i saw this on ellen :D

  • lol i saw this on Ellen but in a much bigger scale

  • Wind vortex.

  • nice but i dont know were to get dry ice please help

  • @jmcconnell64

    where are you from?

i know whre to get that~

  • hehe good luck MOM

  • This is awesome.. Only if I had some dry ice...

  • nice

  • I remember the fog machine version of this xD, You showed it on ellen xD

  • idk how does it happen steve

  • @undeadgamer2471 It is air movement.

  • can u repeat the question?

  • Ahh, sublimation. How we love thee and thy entertaining, if not simplistic, joys.

  • 0:48 spells science

  • dry ice is so useful....

  • Any new ideas?

  • lol you have like three smoke rings videos

  • #show

  • epic

  • nice

  • @youtared

thank you for not saying 'first' lol.

  • teehee .

  • Halloweenie!!

  • I saw this on the news yesterday! (:

  • I tried putting out a candle.. knocked it over and almost burnt my house down.

  • I love how you failed to include scissors and a knife in the "here is what you need" segment.

I was screaming at my screen BUT I DON'T NEED A KNIFE!, SCISSORS, WHAAAA?

  • Steves Your a Amazing scientest. in science class i have an A+ because of you and your videos. at first i had a C because i was confused about everything

  • whip cream pouring like water falls.

  • 2nd. woo! true Steve Spangler fan because im Colorado born

  • no link to buy? :C
