It's good to know these movies exist. What a sad planet it would be if only the new Superman film existed, seeing as it is completely devoid of feeling and emotion and likable characters.
These days it seems almost taboo for a film to do anything less than make us stare at the screen like zombies. Films just aren't made to be moving anymore. They are all CGI fluffy with no heart.
Brandon Routh was on nowhere near as good as christopher reeve as superman but he was on a hiding to nothing. It should have been left alone just more people seeing the money signs and destroying a franchise legacy in the process.
i think Christopher Reeve was the best, but Brandon Routh have to give him credit, he did a great performance and to find someone who looks like Christopher Reeve, is brilliant in itself. Looking forward to his next out at Superman.
I love the Donner cut! Richard Lester and the Salkinds suck! You ruined the Superman series! If Donner had been left to finish II or even to direct further Superman films , it would have been an awesome series.
Donner's version was FAR superior to Donner's version, minus the ending which was Lester's which made no sense in comparison, but minus that then the overall movie was awesome to say the least.
I prefer the cinema cut! and has anyone noticed the major mistake in the new version! at the end of the film where Clark kent goes back to teach that guy in the eating place a lesson!!! well! just before that! Superman spun the world back in time!! so the whole clark getting beaten up never took place right!! and the old guy that runs the place! yells out 'I just got this place fixed'!! :) the timelines just got messed up :)
Donner's cut is better than Lesters. It takes out the cheezy campy stuff that Donner wants to steer away from. It's darker, more realistic, like the original. Lester's version is fine, but most of it was Donner anyway. He just got all the credit.
@GisherJohn24 The Richard Lester Superman II is still entertaining and is head and shoulders above the Superman films that followed it. I have yet to see the Donner cut but will soon.
hi Reguardind Superman 2 HIGH DEF Dose anyone know if Superman 2 richard donners cut never before HAVE SEEN footage HD version is worth buying or is this another front cover alterd too fool fans
I have a the HD version but I only paid 5 British pounds for it :) I would say the normal version is better out of the 2! but the Donner version is worth a look! some scenes are put together not so good! think of it as Superman 2 with rough bits added!! one thing that is crap! the Paris scene is removed!! and when Clark saves Louis in the river!! wish the original was on HD!
Honestly, as much as I love The Donner Cut, the film has every right to end with Supes leaving Lois on the balcony knowing who he is and leaving the story on an emotional cliffhanger, Lois knows who he is in the comics, it'd have brought the film closer to making sense in the present day. Darn Tom and his Silver Age mentalities at the time
Lester's may have had plot holes but he done it far better than Donner's and left you to imagine what had happened. Donner's cut looked a bit childish like outakes.
That preview ur talking about is not real, it won't happen. due to the fact it would be a tv film not a big screen film. ya can't have one dude play superman and then have another guy star as him the next. it dose not work really well, thats is why they restarted the batman films.
That's why it say's it's "more of a montage". Jesus the IQ of this site goes down daily. Read the description 1st in future before you start embarrassing yourself!
the only good parts to the donner cut i think, are the scenes with zod. its a bit clearer and in depth of how zods passion against superman is born. otherwsie, lester all he way. the ending to donners cut is rubbish, and "General, you never heard of freedom of the press", dont quite cut it.
Lester's version was the best leaner and tighter than Donner's, good Donner got fired and Lester was hired for superman 2, however Donner's original Superman was the best.
Yeah, you're just SO wrong! Talking out of your arse. How can a film which is shorter and tighter edited be less lean. Don't twist quotes for your argument when they plainly don't fit.
I bought The Richard Donner Cut of Superman 2 and I was just purely simply amazed even with the screen test footage they used. This version did not drag and was very fast paced. Is it better than the Richard Lester Cut? at this momnet its hard to say. It was pretty cool that they used most of John Williams music in this version of Superman 2 RD.
Oh, it's FAR better than the Lester version - he totally screwed it up. The Donner cut - to quote a recent dvd magazine - is a "leaner, more interesting version". Donner's version = slick, witty story telling with a genuine sense of menace from Zod & co. Lester's version = roller-skates, toupees and ice cream blowing in your face. Nuff said!
Spot on! Superman The Movie, Donner's Superman II & Singer's Superman Returns now comprise one of THE great movie trilogies. . . maybe. . . even better than Star Wars. . .
Thanks for mentioning that, mate. Now I don't seem so confused when I see Lex visit the Fortress at the begining of SUPERMAN RETURNS, PS. Donner's cut rocks!
Hi Centralcolumn, There are way too many plot holes in the Superman films to even begin. I think that Bryan Singer was basically trying to ignore the fact that Sup 3&4 were made (cos lets face it, they were hugely inferrior to the first 2 films). I also think the idea that Superman had a son was also a reason he chose to pursue this timeline, as obviously Supes and Lois sleep together in Sup II.
The only question I have is this: As the new film Superman Returns is based from both Superman and Superman II and features the Fortress of Solitude, how, if we are to accept Donner's version of Superman II as the "real" version, do we explain the destruction of the Fortress in the Donner Cut? Perhaps he re-builds it, but what are other's thoughts on this?
Well, I know Singer decided that the crystals that make up the fortress and all of Krypton's technology continually grow (hence how he was able to grow himself a space ship). Maybe 5 years was enough time for the fortress to regenerate. It would explain why the fortress's layout is different.
My question is how, if Superman turned back time at the end of 2 instead of 1, then how can Lois still be pregnant? I guess we can keep that tacked onto Superman 1, since Donner himself actually decided to move that ending to 1 for time reasons and was going to make a new ending later, and never was able to.
If Superman turned the world back to make her forget that he is also Clark Kent, It couldn't change the fact that biologically, Lois was pregnant and had no memory of who the father was because she had no memory of being in the Fortress with him.
Why's that? The reason she forgets is because he has gone back in time. He went back in time to before the had sex, from what I hear (I haven't seen the cut).
Let us not forget that Superman Does Turn Back time (yet once again) In the Donner cut. So even though he Destruys the fortress of salitude, Turning back time would have rebuilt it. if The evil kryptonians return to the Phantom Zone, It is possible if not plausible that the fortress is still standing at the end of Superman 2 Donner's cut. And I do Agree that Donner's Version is superior to Lester's.
GREAT video buddy! I bought the Donner Cut other day. . . I LOVE it! There's no real point watching the Lester 'version' ever again. Donner, you rock! At last, we can watch Superman 1 & 2 as they were conceived; a classy, witty, slick two part story.
It's good to know these movies exist. What a sad planet it would be if only the new Superman film existed, seeing as it is completely devoid of feeling and emotion and likable characters.
