Van Heflin won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for an MGM production called "Johnny Eager" (the stars of the movie were Robert Taylor and Lana Turner).

Due to wartime materials restrictions the actors received Oscars made of plaster of Paris. They were replaced with the "real thing" after the war.
