He was then suspended for the remainder of his fight license and had the CASC had the rules they have now. the fight would have been ruled a no contest. As it is only Ralek Gracie 24 yo holds a true victory over Sakuraba who was 42 at the time.

The best fighters in the world are also the best strikers. Back in the old UFC days, Gracie simply caught fighters off guard with his unorthodox (at the time) style.
Fedor, Anderson Silva, Machida, Shogun, Wanderlei Silva, R. Jackson, Overeem, Mousassi etc...are all strikers first. Gracie just introduced a new bag of tricks, and with minimal wrestling tools could be neutralized (ie: the sprawl).
@logicCplusplus Sakuraba was far from one of the best strikers. he was a solid striker but not a "best" striker. He was the best fighter in the world for several years. His loses came to other elite fighters who outweighed him by 30-50 lbs and he beat several elites who outweighed him by the same aswell.
A controversial bout maybe it was fixed. It looks like Sakuraba was holding back I believe he could have kicked Royce's arse even if he did use steroids like he did in their first encounter when he made Royce look stupid. Maybe the Gracie's used cash raised from their schools to pay Sak' off because he's beat so many of them and to restore the Gracie reputation.
The first time I saw this rematch I thought " What, Sakuraba won!". The second time the same. The third, I realized... Royce won because of points and time. He played to the rules. In reality, Sakuraba had harder hits, better positions and so forth. In a real fight, I would have to put my money on Sakuraba. Plus, I like the guy. Respect Royce and other Graices but dont like them.
If I get a case of sinusitis I am given a steroid to help get rid of it as well with a anti-biotic. NOT ALL STEROIDS ARE THE KIND THAT HELP IN SPORTS!!! Royce didn't use a steroid that made him strong like a bull, just one that helped injuries heal.

The CSAC simply fined Royce $2,500 and gave him a one year suspension from fighting (which didn't matter anyway as he hasn't fought since). It's a shame because Royce simply cheated and it should have been declared AT LEAST a no-contest. It's sad that Nick Diaz can soundly defeat Gomi and have it declared a no-contest because of a +THC test but Royce can juice and still get the W.

This fight pretty much marked the end of brazilian jujitsu. Notice how the gracie is no longer even doing grappling. He's just brawling wildly.

The best fighters in the world are also the best strikers. Back in the old UFC days, Gracie simply caught fighters off guard with his unorthodox (at the time) style.
Fedor, Anderson Silva, Machida, Shogun, Wanderlei Silva, R. Jackson, Overeem, Mousassi etc...are all strikers first. Gracie just introduced a new bag of tricks, and with minimal wrestling tools could be neutralized (ie: the sprawl).

@logicCplusplus Sakuraba was far from one of the best strikers. he was a solid striker but not a "best" striker. He was the best fighter in the world for several years. His loses came to other elite fighters who outweighed him by 30-50 lbs and he beat several elites who outweighed him by the same aswell.

A controversial bout maybe it was fixed. It looks like Sakuraba was holding back I believe he could have kicked Royce's arse even if he did use steroids like he did in their first encounter when he made Royce look stupid. Maybe the Gracie's used cash raised from their schools to pay Sak' off because he's beat so many of them and to restore the Gracie reputation.

The first time I saw this rematch I thought " What, Sakuraba won!". The second time the same. The third, I realized... Royce won because of points and time. He played to the rules. In reality, Sakuraba had harder hits, better positions and so forth. In a real fight, I would have to put my money on Sakuraba. Plus, I like the guy. Respect Royce and other Graices but dont like them.

If I get a case of sinusitis I am given a steroid to help get rid of it as well with a anti-biotic. NOT ALL STEROIDS ARE THE KIND THAT HELP IN SPORTS!!! Royce didn't use a steroid that made him strong like a bull, just one that helped injuries heal.

The big reason i think people dog him is he's lost he always makes excuses for it. Not to mention he's intentionally hurt people just to hurt em. Spike recently had a show called ultimate Gracie where he says he broke a guys arm, just because Royler told him too. This was after the guy tapped out.things like that lose alot of respect.

Or those that say GJJ/BJJ is the only great ground fighting, when their are other great sub styles such as Catch as can catch wrestling (Saku) and Sambo(Fedor).

The point if a family wants to claim that they're the best of the best and that size dosen't matter as long as you know jujitsu it's a pretty bad repdamage for Royce to take steroids.
You've got to keep your words soft and sweet in case you have to eat them later.

@LakDel well the fight was stricken from official records because I believe this is the fight Gracie tested positive for steroids. So technically, he didn't win.

@bobby666x This fight wasn't stricken from any official records and the CSAC never over turned Royce Gracie's win. The CSAC simply fined Royce $2,500 and gave him a one year suspension from fighting (which didn't matter anyway as he hasn't fought since). It's a shame because Royce simply cheated and it should have been declared AT LEAST a no-contest. It's sad that Nick Diaz can soundly defeat Gomi and have it declared a no-contest because of a +THC test but Royce can juice and still get the W.

@apo115 this fight was in los angeles. the california state atheletic commission had no rules for overturning a decision at the time. even witha positive test on roids. their first fight was in Japan at the Pride GP 2000 where Saku forced Royce to throw in the towel.
