ask maynard. but he might shoot you with his paintball gun lol. i think its about the spiritual battle with the self and how the dark side and light side collide between us all.
My interpretation of this song is leaning towards a lost love, which could also be referred to a past addiction. They make us fans extremely entertained in a way that needs no explanation....
I feel that Maynard is describing the battle for his soul. On one side you have his hatred for his father (the snake), its wants to corrupt him. (drag me down like some sweet gravity)
One the other side you have his love for his son, which begs him to feel again (my blood before me begs me, open up my heart again). In the end his love for his son triumphs over his hated for his father.
There are parallels to this in all our lives. We decide which emotion wins in our minds.
1:07 is "They're both totally void of hate" not "But they're totally void of hate". Just a minor error I noticed, not trying to flame you or anything.
Seems to me this song is about his son. I just can't see a connection with this song and heroin. But in all honesty it doesn't matter what I think. It has a different meaning to all of us which is the beauty of being a Tool fan.
Love Tool :) This song is touching me, It expresses how I'm feeling right now. I'm still going through a break up and this is striking a cord with my emotions.
@ram0889 It is so cool that a song can have people in a harmony and how someone else has done the same sort of crying or shared similar feelings - The unity of music and the gratitude for such a time as this.... whatever that "this" may be
I love how you capitalized "IN" when you wrote the video description because you know there's always gonna be that person that's like, "yo where the lyrics yo I can't find em". Haha made my day!
This song is about addiction... the "snake" is the seductive drug. it is that drug that sings to him, with a "venomous voice". the high is a "sweet gravity", the drug "drains", "bleeds" "cracks" and "empties" it has the decency to kill him to put him out of his misery. "consideratley killing" him. the "walls come down" thats when he hits bottom, perhaps over dose. in the death throws he says "I don't mind." the H might be heroine. not sure though.
@anusbleacher as much as that opens up my mind, i would love to take you completely serious, but your username cracks me up. I see where youre coming from though, i think you're right honestly.
Respond to this video... Doesn't really matter to me what it meant to Maynard. Most of his music speaks to my own experience, interpretation throughout years of listening. And it is still evolving
@anusbleacher There are many hints toward heroin yes, but there are also many insinuations toward the strength of Satan. "The Snake behind me hisses" Snake being one of the animal representations of Satan. "My blood before me begs me, open up my heart again" Possibly a calling from his inner self to release and remember who he is? Just my view. Anyone is entitled to what they believe :)
Maynard said once before a concert something to the effect that, in old cartoons, there is always a devil and an angel on your shoulder, telling you what to do. He said in real life, its not always that easy.
Also, I think his son has the middle name "H." Not abbreviated, just the letter H. Devo H. Keenan.
I think, on a personal level for Maynard, it deals with what Prison Sex dealt with-- the cycles of abuse. But it is beautiful and perfect enough to be whatever we see and feel it to be.
@Caesaro finally someone who knows what they are talkin about, you are correct on his sons name and ive heard this song was for him cud be bullshit but it came from a legit source
@anusbleacher This song is not about heroin. It's about the relationship he had with his father (whose name I believe begins with the letter H) and considering that relationship he speaks of wanting to be a better father to his son, than his father was to him. thats the beauty of abstractness. Your mind doesn't know what to do with the abstractness of the lyrics so your mind just pulls out it's own meaning.

@anusbleacher Whoa, totally not about heroin.
It's about when Maynard was molested as a child. His son wants him to open up to him, hint his blood before him begs?
He's saying that his past is left in the past, and he's not going to do that to his son.
