Minhas linhas preferidas dessa música são: "Most of all please free me from this aching metal ring. And open out this cage towards the sun."
E sim, vc deve ser carente. Amor é escravidão. Liberdade é tudo.
I was only 10 when I discovered Elton through the Lion King movie and have never looked back since. My children will have no choice lol as they will just grow up with Elton without realising. They'll be older and probably realise they love him :P
I grew up listening to Elton John constantly, because of my mother. I'm probably one of few younger people commenting on this video, but this was one of my favorite songs when I was about five or six. :)
6 dislikes??? OMG 6 people already went to hell. How come they hated it??? For me, this is a great song. Don't hate me but this is what i feel for this song. AWESOME!!!!
Oh, this guy, Sir Elton John has been blessed for his talent, blessed for being part of our lives and , now, blessed for his gorgeous Zachary...his beautiful son...GOD bless you, SIR ELTON JOHN and we hope you keep making us happy as you have always done. I LOVE YOU...AND YOUR LOVELY SONGS! GOD BLESS YOUR BEAUTIFUL FAMILY....
Uh.. The song came out in 1969.. Princess Diana was born July 1, 1961.. I don't think there is a connection between the lyrics that Bernie wrote and her marriage.
So, to answer your question about the meaning of the lyric, in my opinion, he is talking about be free of AIDS... because it's a very difficult disease... but each one of you must have your own opinion.
Just remember:
"If you turn your face to the sun, the shadows fall behind."
Well, as I know this song was composed by Elton John to help a friend of him, Ryan White because he was with AIDS and many people was accusing and spreading lies about him. When Elton's friend died, he decide to create a foundation to help another people with the same disease.
I really respect Sir Elton John not as a public person but as the humanitarian that he is.
If you want to know more about his foundation it's name is ELTON JOHN AIDS FOUNDATION - EJAF
The song can be interpreted in a number of ways, it does not necessarily have to be about marriage. It maybe be about freeing someone from his shackles, it may be about letting go, etc. It up to the listeners how the interpret the song. :)
As a song interpreter, the metal ring, death, is nothing to do with the music. why? the author before he dies wrote this song, for the reason that he inflicts his life into realism. he wants freedom from the things he is experiencing and encountering. that all and that's simple. he still hopes that everybody could understand why he is like that, and others that he is not accepted the author wants freedom from mind. tnx
this is the second tym i heard this song and it was touching...how could 6 pipol dislike these...??
honestly....i'm afraid to death cause i keep on imagining death...and keep on asking on myself..."how death will be look like"..???...but when i heard this song again i feel that i'm in heaven so i keep on listening to this song.....
and also i want also this song to have playing at my funeral..^^..
tnx to this song cause it gives me a strong feeling to face the death cox idk when it will come.^^

this song, i believe, is about someone who had been held down by the circumstances in life that restricts him from soaring high 'towards the dreams' he has. it may mean, marriage, sickness, imprisonment, poverty, lack of education, etc.
First time I heard this song I was in the Philippines. They loved this song as it was played alot and sang in the clubs etc. I never heard it here in the states. Its my favorite Elton song.....
Democlisrocha - I don't think that the voice in th esong wants to be free from a ring, but, yes, from a chain, from a prison, from anything that is on his way for freedom. The ' metal ring' may also be 'handcuffs' (algemas...).
Can someone please tell me what this song is really about? I mean, bowman62rd said his friend wants this song played at her funeral. I thought this song was about a man who is married but he wants freedom, he wants to be free from the "metal ring". I only ask because I am studying english.
@democlisrocha I read a note about this song. I only know that Elton John sang this song on funeral of boy who had AIDS and he died. When he had AIDS suddenly everyone didn't like this boy, because everyone didn't know what is it the ilness and everybody was scared of this ilness. That boy lived in 80s,he died in 1990.I hope that i helped you.
@democlisrocha ... if i'm not mistaken.... this song is all about country without freedom....people who wants to show that they are human.. who wants to spread their wings and move do what they want without hesitation... can walk freely ... just like pigeon flying

@democlisrocha i think this song is about following your dreams. To explore your limits actually. It goes with a funeral too because the remembered person will slowly fly to their dreams.

@democlisrocha yes, you are definitely right, this song is about a maried person who wants to be free like a skyline pigeon who can fly away from his/her boring married life. If I am not mistaken Elton John wrote this song for his friend R.I.P. Lady Diana of England.
Five days ago, I was riding with a long-time friend, and this song played. It was new to me, and my she said: "This is what I'd like to have playing at my funeral. " Tears started from my eyes...and it was silent for awhile. Such thoughts... the thought of my closest friend dying. That how I wished our paths had crossed 30 years before, when I.....I could have asked her to be my wife. They did not, though. And now, I can only imagine hearing this song in the ever closing future...
@Xyoutubx3rsunit NOPE !!!!!!!!! ABSOLUTELY WRONG ............................... IT'S ONE OF THE BEST MUSICS FOR ALL TIMES AND FOR ALL SEASON NOR FOR EVERY MINUTE OF THAT THE MUSIC LAST ...... THESE MUSICS LAST FOREVER .....I am just 15 yrs old and I am proud to be A PERSON WHO LOVES OLDIES SONGS SO MUCH
@CreativeImbalances Do you know what you are talking about? The late 60's, 70's and the early 80's are the only era of real good music and gifted musicians. I wouldn't be surprised if you are a teen who is into Justin Timberlake or Lady Gaga...Gosh!
@thelmadk Actually, I'm a 30-year-old who did her math homework with Pink Floyd CD's playing in her headphones when she wasn't hiding in the library from the "cool" kids checking out the Banned Books display before class started. But thanks anyway.
thumbs up for you Alessandro for uploading this one....Kudos to you pal. this has been the favorite song of my former mentor and friend way way back highschool .
When I was a kid I used to sang the chorus of this song but I didn't know what it's about. Now that I've been through a lot in this life, I see the words of this song differently now... way more than just a literal skyline pigeon aspiring to fly again... It's like, life. Living life.
Watch out! I see a seagull at 4:00.

Most soft rock artists of the 1970's were terrible. Then there's this guy, and suddenly you can forgive the 1970's.

But thanks anyway.

i like this song -
i'm just 17 in may 24.
but i will not swap to modern "girly" theme songs by the modern singers.
just this genre - and the metal types. :))
dislike should flyaway! :))

When I was a kid I used to sang the chorus of this song but I didn't know what it's about. Now that I've been through a lot in this life, I see the words of this song differently now... way more than just a literal skyline pigeon aspiring to fly again... It's like, life. Living life.
