The most hazardous thing I saw with regard to the sky lanterns was when the few wise-guys attached sparklers or other fireworks to them. Tonight in Chiang Mai there were a few times people had to dodge hot particles dropping down from them. Other than that they didn't seem to be too bad. For people who've never seen them they use what looks like wax impregnated cardboard or paper for fuel.
Get many black balloons, tie several small flashlight to the balloons. Tie the balloons to each other to make the shapes as if it looks like a flying saucer, then you let it go at night and it looks like an UFO! LOL.....
Seriously irresponsible to set fire to stuff and launch it into the air to land anywhere. Could end up setting someones house or barn or stables on fire. Could kill people, kill animals, or destroy people's livelihood...
...and how about forest or heath fires?
ah well, its a giggle right?
Only complete losers would do such a thing!
Nonsense to say these are safe - just look at all the you tube videos showing people being idiots with them, and getting caught in trees etc
they generaly run out of flame fuel and float back down to earth. maybe the paper will tare or catch fire then you get another ausie stile forest fire of which conspicuously came about when these fire lanterns started to get popular with all the recent ufo hype ect
Well, this looks completely different from those other videos. It just isn't bright enough. And it pretty unstable. Ok, UFO fans - back to the real deal!
agreed! ufo's are copying lanterns to look inconspicuous. i saw a so called sky lantern! it was going in a straight line at 70 miles an hour with cross winds of 15 plus mph, it had already reached its max hight & speed at 500 feet in the frost so had been in the air longer than they say is normal of 20 mins & was still going strong with 2 good flames or light sorces and went right over my head so i could see it in detail it was bigger than the normal 5/6ft & had a good simetrical cubic shape!

The only time they come down is after the flame diminishes. Other than that they'll keep rising.
