The "dog" bit reminds me of a caller on a radio show I heard complaining about seeing dead dogs on the road and "If people would tie their dogs in the beds of their pick-up trucks, those dogs wouldn't keep falling out of those trucks onto the road." The radio host had to explain, "Uh...I think those dogs get killed crossing the road, not falling out of pick-up trucks."
