is it just me or do they seem to sound a bit nicer off mic??? the last concert i went to i also thought they sounded nicer for one song they didnt use mic ... hmm. haha
well of course they do. The acoustics are left completely up to the hall rather then some cheap mics and a sound engineer that probably doesn't know what he's doing. not to mention if you want the control and perfect volumes you can pure acapella, you would have to expect the singers to always be a perfect distance from the mic which is impossible. No mic will always sound better imo. unless you have room mics maybe...
They do sound better. But I have to disagree about the remark about the "cheap mics and a sound engineer that probably doesn't know what he's doing." Their sound man Fred has traveled with them for over a decade. He knows he the ins and outs of every song. Where he has to mix on the fly, where he can just let it ride. As a former sound engineer myself, it's clear to me that he knows his stuff.
@acappellafreak I'm sure he is amazing. A good group will have a good engineer. But in general, on live tours sound tends to go downhill because of using in house engineers etc... Regardless, pure acoustic sound will always sound better than anything that is amplified or mic'd because there are so many overtones and subtleties that happen in the human voice naturally that are eliminated by microphones and amplification.

though I agree that the one with Scott singing the lead was good...but George singing is something else

Older version with Scott singing the verses on up on the roof is much better.
And lol at the singing along.
