  • I'm from originally from Maine and even though I am a liberal, I always admired her for voting her conscious, not voting strictly down party lines, and, I believe, authentically cared for her constituants.

  • Comment removed

  • @Cerulean0987 Well, if she voted according to a party line so different from the majority of Maine constituants, she would simply lose her seat. This is mean calculation for more votes on, as she summed up, having a government taken over by a few companies ("little gov't"), letting the industrialized world's largest wealth gap widen by denying inequalities at the core ("individual responsability"), and big military spending. Don't get fooled just because she looks as friendly as Obama.

  • @Monkeyshouts True. A spade is still a spade. Regardless, I'd take her ANYDAY over the extreme conservative christian right or the T-baggers... I mean T-Partyers.

  • Snowe, you are fired you pig-demon

  • The Republican Party Sucks!

Olympia Snowe should leave that Party immediately, or they will throw her under the Bus!

  • Snowe is a warmonger. No warmonger is a moderate.

  • Yeah- the integrity of a criminal and the courage of a traitor.

  • Vote her out in 2010, voting for the heathcare bill is voting for more of the same governmet games, lies, corrupion, greed, and big pay offs to special intrest groups.

  • If that's your definition of TRAITOR! Then your right.

  • Stupid stupid stupid bitch.

Just like the dumbocraps...spend us into oblivion.

  • I consider myself a true conservative, and your logic seems to be based on limited information/intellect. You realize after all that Obama, for all his flaws, inherited over a trillion dollar deficit. I hope you also realize that Bush added more government spending in his 8 year tenure then any other administrator in the history of the United States. If they end the endless wars overseas and manage to make it deficit neutral it would take away from the deficit. Stop watching TV. Please.

  • What about any of your statements is "conservative"?

Bush DID spend WAY too much. I am no fan of Bush. He did some good, but he also signed off every stinkin' spending bill placed in front of him. BUT...Obama and the democraps are worse.

It is YOUR logic that is flawed. For all that you chide Bush for, Obama is much worse as is evident by the amount of money he has already spent and is determined to continue spending.

We can't spend our way out of debt.

  • I agree, we cannot. My only point in Obamas defense is that his spending hasn't come close to GW's thus far. I voted for Ron Paul in the primaries and wrote him in during the election. Ending the wars, which neocons love, would be a conservative action in the original sense of the word. What I am saying is that those who loved bush should love Obama, being that they are the same exact monster fiscally speaking. Deficit was at 1.2 when he came in, now it's 1.4. Vote both parties out people.

  • Besides, why even care at this point? They're going to continue to drive our government towards bankruptcy and eliminate the value of our dollar. Sit back and watch the ship sink. Enjoy. Once it does we can refresh the whole system, hopefully in a way which is sustainable. I just get tired of the people who voted for Bush pretending like Obama is any different. The idea that people really see a difference makes me feel ashamed. This stupidity will continue until it sinks though, clearly.

  • I agree with most of what you said with the exception that Obama and Bush are the same.

    The difference is this:

Bush was fiscally foolish. Obama is fiscally retarded. Bush maxed our credit. Obama will destroy it. Bush was like a college kid with his first credit card. Obama is like a 5 year old with unlimited credit in a toy store.

We have gone from bad to nightmare. The republicans went out of control when they knew better. The democrats will stop at nothing until there IS nothing.

  • Do you think the republicans, if voted back into a majority, will fix it? Or will they continue on the same path? I'm not sure, but I don't feel confident. What do you think?

  • Sadly...I am afraid they will do the same thing they did with Bush- not as bad as the democrats, but certainly not as conservatively as their platform dictates.

I HATE going to the poles only to have to vote for the lesser of 2 evils, but that is the way that it is.

They're ALL crooks. It's just a matter of voting for the guy that will empty your bank account verses voting for the guy that will steal everything you've got.

  • Please vote her out! She's a FRAUD!!

  • keep talking like that, and we (democrats) will take her and the rest of the moderates. Your party will collapse if more people like you believe everyone should listen to Sean Hannity when they vote. Um.... yeah in that case, go head and talk away.

  • Keep thinking that, but I think your going to be shocked in the mid term elections.

  • how is socialized medicine a part of limited government?

  • Haha, this is the first time I've noticed this but Snowe has the same nose as Specter. LOL!

  • The only thing that has changed is the fact that the voters are tired of the continued spending of those republicans in power. It's time to stop creating new programs when there is zero money to pay for them. Just like the typical Americans, if you want to purchase something new, you must give up something else. Snowe really should consider the values she has regarding this, consider what percentage of state residents receive public assistance in her state? Where is individual responsibility

  • Gay marriage opponents believe that homosexuality is a psychological disorder; marriage law should not treat something inherently broken as if it were not. Their belief is largely secular, rooted in assumptions about human nature common to most Earthlings. Organized religion's role stands out cuz it's, uh, organized. The nonreligious majority doesn't have the unifying network of associations that religious folks do.

  • If Republicans were secular, I would give them chance in the voting booth.

  • I am curious what you mean by this. Can you explain?

  • Well, Republicans form a broad spectrum of their policy based on mainstream protestant Christian views. A decent chunk of the Republican legislature believes the United States is a "Christian nation" more than in the de facto sense. These people pass anti-gay legislation, abstinence only policies in schools, believe we are at war with Islam, try to prevent evolution from being taught, and try vigorously to push pro-life legislation.

  • You paint it in a negative light. To say they are against gays because many believe that marriage should be defined as it always has a big stretch and "war with Islam"? The radicals yes but the religion hardly.. prevent evolution being taught?? prevent no alongside intellectual design yes. If these ideas offend you ok but you have painted them in the extreme the fact is many who are not mainline protestants don't have a problem with them.

  • Intelligent design is the idea that life is so complex it had to have been made by God. All proof for intelligent design is found by saying, "Oh, that's so cool! God had to have made it." It is unapologetic young Earth creationism, which is why it can't be taught in schools.

The ideas that form what we call "evolution" have been observed countless times and no serious scientist who can read actually refutes them.

  • I can't figure out opposition for gay marriage other than that derived from Leviticus passages. Although you are right in saying that mainstream protestants aren't the only ones who don't want gays to be happy, I still regard it as religious legislation that should not have a place in secular politics.

  • Again you paint this in such a negative way. Do you think that is fair way to discuss. Assuming protestants "don't want gays to be happy" is the wrong assumption. Many base it on reason not just religion. Many based it on children and that they are best raised by a parent of each sex. Not because they hate gays.

  • These ideas offend me, because I am not a mainstream protestant or evangelical. I think the United States Consitution and all our founding fathers were very strong deists and secularists, and they had no interest in putting God in politics. I don't think gays should suffer because their preferences aren't in line with the Christian right's religious views. I don't think "abstinence-only" education is effective at deterring teenage hormones, either.

  • On the other hand, Republicans have economic policy that sometimes makes sense. Or appeared to in the Reagan years. Low taxes, pro-business policies, less government spending. These are money matters that don't have inherent moral values. Sometimes they are applicable. Should I become rich and be rational, I think it would make sense for me to support those that would tax me less.

On the other hand, I think Republicans are theocrats, so that won't ever happen.

  • What a lying bitch. I would take a blue blood dem anyday over this quack! she gives RINOs a bad name.

  • Snowe is hero for standing up to the wacko wing of her party.

  • really? i coulda sworn your party was and will always be the party of fundamentalist christian whack jobs too

  • If Congress can employ money indefinitely to the general welfare,

and are the sole and supreme judges of the general welfare,

    they may take the care of religion into their own hands;

they may appoint teachers in every State, county and parish

    and pay them out of their public treasury;

they may take into their own hands the education of children,

    establishing in like manner schools throughout the Union;

    they may assume the provision of the poor;

  • Point, James Madison may be one of the founding fathers but that doesn't mean his thought or judgment is infallible.

By his logic the establishment of FBI, EPA, FDA, OSHA etc has "subvert the very foundations, and transmute the very nature of the limited government."

No offense but i think only conspiracy theorist would come to such conclusion (Not suggesting or accusing that Madison was a CT of course).

  • Father of the Constitution. I think he knew the thought on it. The extent of healthcare would dwarf those and Madison would be rolling over in his grave.

I just quoted Madison so yes you were accusing him as a CT.

  • Hmm maybe you have a point a bout me (unwittingly) lump Madison with CT even though that's not what i meant to do.

    In that case i'm sorry.

Anyway if Madison's quote you cited was right then govt would have taken over people's lives since SocSec was passed.

And yet Americans (especially women and minorities) actually have MORE rights right now since Madison's time.

  • Not everything we have done passes the muster of the constitution.

Soc. Sec. probably could have gotten passed as an amendment to the constitution.

  • It doesn't matter how SocSec passed, my point is there has been a lot of things passed which give authority to Federal Govt to do things it didn't do before.

And yet America didn't turn into what Madison warned in the quote you cited.

    Which means Madison was wrong.

Just because he's one of the founders doesn't mean he's infallible.

  • Doesn't make it right with our Constitution even if it was passed.

Things don't turn bad right off. It is through erosion over time that has damaging affect unless their is a pull back.

I never said Madison was infallible and it is not about if he was right or wrong. It is about what the Constitution was intended to do. The founders were smart enough to allow us to change the constitution if we wanted to do it.

  • What "erosion over time" are you talking about?

Can you tell me just one constitutional right taken away by Federal Govt since Madison times?

  • Did I say a constitutional right has been taken away? Are u an American?

  • So if you're not referring to constitutional right then what do you mean with "erosion over time that has damaging effect"?

What does the "erosion" damage if not constitutional right?

It's a relevant question to the topic of this vid and more relevant IMO with whether or not i'm an American.

But if you don't want to answer that's all right.

After all, this is just YouTube comment section.

  • Actually since you not an American it shouldn't concern you unless you want to propagate your political philosophy to other nations. Whatever constitution you have in Indonesia doesn't really affect me and I don't think I should way into that matter unless I am an Indonesian. Perhaps since Obama has ties there you want to support him.

Regardless, our constitution is one of limited govt. that has been expanded over time. That is itself an erosion of the original intent of its founders.

  • The 5th Amendment, via Kelo v. City of New London.

  • they may undertake the regulation of all roads other than post-roads;

in short, every thing, from the highest object of state legislation

down to the most minute object of police,

would be thrown under the power of Congress.... Were the power

of Congress to be established in the latitude contended for,

it would subvert the very foundations, and transmute the very nature

of the limited Government established by the people of America."

    James Madison

  • I'm a progressive Democrat. Enough with the liberal non-sense. It's old. Get some new propaganda. The old stuff is stale as heck.

  • Olympia doesn't take crap from anybody. Even fellow republicans.

    I like that.

  • The Repub party has been taken over by religious extremest terrorists. So sad

  • what part of the stimuls bil she voted for was limited govt'?

  • Couldn't have said it better myself. Too many hard core conservatives running the show. Extremism is never a good thing. It leaves you no room to move. If you fear anything it should be the extreme! And PLEASE leave God out of it....i'm fairly sure he wants nothing to do with the downright hate and misinformation being pushed!!!

  • Liberals running everything now.. President, house and senate. NO EXCUSES NOW.

  • Liberals aren't conservatives, they don't need excuses, they have reasons. But it's not difficult to do better then Bush.

  • Then you can't blame the conservatives for healthcare bill going down. Dems are fighting dems because they know this ain't going to fly. The more that is known the more the people don't like it.

  • So Point, what do you have against the health Care bill?

And can you please back your objection with example of things actually in the bill?

  • The government role shouldn't be to facilitate 1/6 of the economy. Isn't that enough? That is not the way to control costs of healthcare.

  • Point, the govt already MANDATED by Article 1, Section 8 of US Constitution to facilitate MORE than 1/6 of the economy.

    "The Congress shall have power

To lay and collect taxes, duties, imposts and excises, to pay the debts and provide for the common defence and general welfare of the United States; but all duties, imposts and excises shall be uniform throughout the United States."

Health care right for citizen is part of GENERAL WELFARE.

  • The GOP has changed because the lunatic fringe has been incorporated into the mainstream. This used to be called "the lunatics are running the asylum". They no longer are a party of the people except for the 20% that are nut jobs.

  • PLEASE let he run away from the gop. its the only chance the gop has.

  • She's one of the three Republicans (along with Susan Collins and Arlen Specter) who voted for the $787 billion "stimulus." Who is SHE to be talking about limited government and fiscal responsibility???

As for the claim that she hasn't change, check her American Conservative Union scores:

    Lifetime: 47.88%

    2008: 12.00%

    Looks like change to me.

  • Snowe was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1978.

In 1984, David Keene, the current chairman of the ACU, assumed that position. He is also the managing associate of Carmen Group Lobbying, a Washington, DC-based lobbying firm.

  • holy shit. is senator snowe signaling a potential to switching parties like arlene spector?

  • will michigan win this week

  • This ass is a traitor to the GOP on everything, throw her ass/out now.

  • thank you, for sharing.

Each of us has an opinion, and i'm grateful we have the freedom to do so.

    Take care.

  • Yes Senator Snowe, you may not have changed. That doesn't mean you shouldn't.

  • what a difference between her and nut job Bachmann

  • Specter swap incoming

  • Snowe is among the last of the Goldwater type Republicans. Which is to be respected.

  • Goldwater and Snowe aren't that much alike. Actually they are nothing like the same. The closest thing to Goldwater these days is probably Demint or Coburn.

  • horseshit

goldwater would hate demint and coburn]

he would take both out to the desert in az and shoot those bastards

  • What do you mean? Goldwater was very conservative. I think you mean Snowe is one of the last Rockefeller Republicans, named after former NY governor and VP Nelson Rockefeller, who was fiscally centrist and socially center-left.

  • Goldwater would be considered a liberal by today's rightwing, especially the social conservatives

  • and that should make people vomit

  • "I didn't leave the GOP the GOP left me", over the last 10 years when it was clear the GOP was going to placate the religious nuts my whole family has left the GOP. Of course i guess i never was a "good Republican" because I always voted for the best person what ever party they were from, what a novel idea, huh? No room for a free thinker in the GOP anyway, right?

  • I think the American populace is changing because in a two party system, the political parties are really the end result of whatever two opposing sentiments are dominant within the populace. Today's Republican policies are borderline insane and this reflects the sentiment of that side of the collective American consciousness.

  • The repug party is attempting to obtain ideological purity. Any party that has ever done so has pushed itself into irrelevance because it shrink to represent a very small minority of the population. The GOP is only shrinking itself, and after all the kindergarten antics they have pulled this year, instead of doing anything useful, I can't wait to see how many seats they lose this mid term election.

  • Ummm the joke will be on you . . . The GOP will make a big comeback in the midterm elections, expecially after cap and trade, Obamacare, and the failed "stimulus" package.

  • Can you read my future as well oh great one.

  • Maybe if the right wing keeps shooting itself in the foot, people will vote them back into office out of misplaced pity.

  • The failed stimulus package that has turned the market around and stopped the dive of the market?

The health care reform package that will provide health insurance to millions, unlike the six page document the GOP submitted that had no number or costs or legitimate suggestions?

The general hate and idiocy the GOP has shown these last months will come back to bite them in the ass.

  • Who is this hag fooling? Fiscal responsibility? Strong national defense? Snowe has thrown both these principles under the bus. She is right about one thing. The republican party is changing. Hopefully the GOP will wake up get back to conservative principles. RINO's like Snowe, Collins, McCain,Grahmnesty and others will hopefully be looking for employment after upcoming elections.

  • The problem is that Repubs say they want things like "smaller government" or "freedom" in one sentence and in the next they want high military spending, more police, and more laws regulating people's lives.

What party wants a small government AND doesn't think they have a right to regulate what people do in their personal lives?

  • smaller govt. strong defense. Not afraid of spending on defense as defense of the nation is the most important thing, don't you agree?

  • I don't mind spending on defense, but when they claim they are fighting an offensive war to "defend us" then I get skeptical.

I'm more concerned with the hypocritical "freedom" issue though. Repubs always claim to be big on freedom but most of them are against gay marriage, against legalizing/taxing cannabis, against euthanasia etc.

Allowing people to choose what they do with their own lives is the most important aspect of so called "freedom".

  • they are against the word marriage being used. not against gays having all the rights a married couple get just the word. "freedom" yes... license to do anything.. different story.

  • No offense Point Guard but is there a law in America which states that only heterosexuals allowed to use the word "marriage" to describe their union?

  • no offense taken. your post doesn't relate with mine.

  • I asked the question because you said:

"They are against the word marriage being used. Not against gays."

  • yeah, the patriot act, the military commisions act, the fisa acts. those are not small government. and not one but two wars. THAT IS BIG GVERNMENT. and do not even get me started on the republican fiscal responsibility. ofcourse right now obama is not overturning the unconstitutional laws set by the bush administration. the dems are not prosecuting the war criminals. so neither party has done anything to uphold the constitution. this is very sad

  • Lets not make everything the govt. does big government. Don't compare healthcare which involves 1/6 of the economy with patriot acts... etc... And since when does going to war constitute big government? That is an ACT not a GOVT. PROGRAM. Bush deficit in 08.. bad Obama's deficit 09 quadrupled Bush's defict.. both bad one very bad. war criminals.. plz..

Medicare is bankrupt. don't compare Military spending with medicare. We have a constitution which gives support to a govt. run military.

  • "And since when does going to war constitute big government?"

As of 2009, the United States government spends about $1 trillion annually on defense-related purposes. How much of the economy do you think that represents?

Actually the constitution limits military spending. This FACT is subverted by calling some military spending 'discretionary'.

You ignore the fact that all of the spending in Obama's 1st budget was introduced by Bush. And only approved by Obama, and the Senate and congress.

  • It is not a govt. program. Of course we have a defense budget for the military. Having a military is in the Constitution and the amount spent is not in the constitution. Please reread it and it's obvious that every nation needs to defend themselves.

Actually Obama owns his first year budget since it was approved by Obama. Obama could have not approved of it. I guess Obama still has no responsibility in your eyes. Plz...

  • She is one republican. How many more democrat senators don't want govt. run healtcare? Much more..

  • govenrment run health care is where government employees run the facilities. what obama is proposing is nothing like that. a single payer system is not government healthcare. it is what medicare is. this is nothing radical. nothing new. do your research

  • "Taxpayer funded" health insurance might better describe the concept.

The military uses government-employed, military physicians. That's government-run health care.

  • When you overall 1/6 of the economy that is a great change along with the beauracracy we will be creating. I am not worried though. Too many dems won't vote for it. So at least we have bipartisanship in Washington. We have both sides agree it is not good for America. Do some more research in the bill as it will bring big changes. It is obvious you haven't done your hw.

  • funny how all the republicans and democrats who oppose the reform have all been paid by the insurance industries. this is not bipartizanship this is bribery. big changes? i hope you are not peddling the death panel bull shit or the illigal alien coverage. both are falce.

  • Is that similiar to Obama and his wheeling and dealing with drug companies? I guess Obama is into bribery too. Death panel know but what do you call care rationing for the elderly. How bout a faster track to the end of life?

  • pointguard, health care for the elderly does need to be rationed. They are used by unscrupulous practitioners to collect Medicare payment for a great many useless, redundant, and more expensive treatments. My wife's step-dad was getting aggressive treatment from his urologist and oncologist for his prostate cancer. Frequent tests, hormone implants. When we moved, he got new doctors - who explained that at 92, prostate cancer is very slow, and he was more likely to be shot by a jealous husband.

  • My point is it shouldn't be done by a beauracrat but the person himself who makes that decision.

  • and just so you know. medicare does not provide health care, they pay for it. so medicare would not be rationing care. thye just would not be able to cover everybody, so the elderly would be forced to to go to private insurers. and those guys would refuse to cover them due to their oh so many preexisting conditions, the kind you get from old age.

  • You can never do enough research!

Medicare is running out of funds and is estimated to start rationing care.

    Do you like freedom?

Because if you play the game of socialism you need to know it's an illusion and it leads us losing very important freedoms...like how we run our businesses...and where doctors get to choose to work...

  • okay, you do notlike socialism? start protesting public schools, post offices, police departments, fire departments, medicare, unbemployment insurance, food inspectors and public roads. those are all tax funded and there by socialist. and hey, look at US. it is not the freest country in the world. It's about 44th in that department.

you want to know what else is running out of funds. the US military. we spend 500 billion dollars on it. and that is not enough. not with the two wars.

  • yes. medicare is running out of funds. because it is not a profit making business and it works all too well. this is the single payer system. all the babyboomers have reached their golden years and need health care. and you bet your bottom $ they are not going to the private insurance companies. those are the real death panels. if medicare had 1/100th of a budget that the US military gets, there would be no bankrupsy in medicare and no rationing of care.

  • If GOPers push her or Collins too much they will do the same thing that Arlen Specter did, they become conservative democrats. They are the last 2 senators that the republicans have in the north east and you could clearly see why.

  • please, collins is a republican. she would never change. she is a partisan hack that thinks obama is a kenyan. speaking as a democrat, i would not want her in the party

  • Actually you need to do more research here. She is a liberal republican that often votes with the dems. And if you think she thinks Obama is not an American then you don't know who she is. I suggest you think before you post because this is embarrassing for u.

  • i am sorry my mistake. i was thinking of snowe

  • no problem

  • You're wrong about her, she is not that kind of republican. She is probably more progressive in many other areas than many other Democratic senators, like Evan Bayh, Landrieu and Nelson, for example. Specter, Collins and Snow were labeled RINOs by other GOPers because they were the only GOPers who supported the stimulus package. Give her a break on this one, let's not act like fanatic right wingers, she was willing to accept triggered public option, something other dems didn't do.

  • snowe went to a tea party rally. one woman started to complain to her that obama is a foreigner and cant possibly be president. snowe replied by saying that she agreed with that, but the courts did not. as far as dems looking for bipartizanship, they might as well haver kids looking for unicorns. its not gona happen. they showed it. they are not arguing policy, they are arguing crazy stories. the dems should be appeasing the dems and forget the gop

  • That wasn't Snowe, that was Jean Schmidt, congresswoman from Ohio

  • That worked so well for Specter didn't it , he polls last vs every republican opponent.

    RIP (retired in politics)

    Reid

    McLame

    Specter

  • When government doesn't get involved, things like 9/11 and Katrina happen.

  • Yeah and Pearl Harbor and the Civil War. Govt. needs to take over. LOL

  • No, we have video evidence that Bush knew about both events before they occurred and was briefed about measures that could be taken to prevent them.

  • Yeah and the first Bush knew about Pearl Harbor.

  • Let me try this again: video. evidence. that Bush. knew. about. those. events. beforehand.

  • Vote for health care reform, Sen. Snowe! You're in a safe position in your state so you have nothing to fear.

  • Snowe, thank you. Those of us in the GOP who haven't turned completely insane need a voice like yours.

I only wish more will fallow.

  • it's follow. Repubs need to get rid of the freakin NeoCons that wrecked thier party and the country. I wish you all good luck with that.

  • You're not even a yank. They can vote for whoever they want. We've got our own election to deal with in a couple weeks. And our conservative party is even more right-wing than the republicans. Did you hear they sent body bags to northern manitoba indian reserves that have been heavily struck by swine flu? Disgraceful isn't it? Or have you been too busy watching CNN?

  • I'll second that but as an Independent. Thanks for being open minded.

  • insane? you mean like calling the president a kenyan? cuz that is what she thinks.

  • Yes, come into the light, Olympia. The public option is not really so bad, is it? You're among friends here.

  • She is a goner in '12 we are going to sweep the liberal trash out of the Senate in ' 10 '12 and '14, it might take 6 years to clean the senate but Arlen, McLame and Reid are gonners in '10.

The house is going to flip in '10 as well, why do you think that Stretch Pelosi is crying up a storm lately. she won't be the leader of the senate in '11.

  • Come over to us- we have a Big Tent.
