The sheer power and anger of Chuck's voice,as well as the menace of the Bomb Squad's production is what makes PE's version incomparable. Not to mention they were speaking truth to the Regan-Bush administration.Big up to Tricky.
I never knew Public Enemy were this good. The only problem is that this version only has the first verse, which means you don't get the excellent story. Otherwise, I'd say I prefer this version to the original...
I love PE, and I think this really adds something to the original. It's real action scene music, but then its also got the hard-hitting lyrics of Chuck D... Really the best of all worlds. I always imagine this as great music for a "Luke Cage: Power Man" movie.
I don't why Tricky needed to reinterpret this song. I don't think it adds anything to the original. It just strips all of the slow building menace of Public Enemy's original video. The singer is cute, the video is good, but Tricky should have just written new lyrics instead of forcing a driving rock melody and not very believable vocal performance (given the lyrics).
Martina Topley-Bird's vocals also de-emphasize the strong internal rhymes of Chuck D's vocals. I'll have to find out why Tricky chose to reinterpret this song.
Sepultura and Asian Dub Foundation do pretty good straight covers.
"Evolution Control Committee" does an unbelievably wondrous mashup of PE's 'Rebel w/o a Pause' with (of all people) Herb Alpert! Search it out.
Plus a mashup of 'By the time I get to Arizona', again with Herb Alpert.
HA! PUBLIC ENEMY Not HARDCORE... what planet are you guys from.???...
They are the definition of HARDCORE. Watch, and listen to "By the time I get to Arizona" then reconsider your backward acusation.

This was the song that got me into Tricky. I simply love it, and can't help but sing along with Martina!

The ONLY successful cover of a hardcore rap song outside of the genre.

Public Enemy is far from 'hardcore' rap tbh....

LOL!!!!!

This is pretty nice, but nothing comes close to the P.E. version. Chuck D can drive the message home like no other.

Great Cover But PE is better! No Doubt.
not to take anything away from this cover.

Musicwise, this version is waaayy better. For driving the message home, PE rules of course ;-)

this is way better than PE to be honest :)

This is a great cover but..
The original does a much better job of showing the Angst of a disenfranchised portion of our society.

I agree with you!

rofl, did she just say "I'm a black man."?
I know this was Public Enemy's lyrics, but she could've at least adjusted that part a little.
Also, this song is mediocre to me.
