56 Cad. Such a perfect example of automotive art. While I also love most Cadillacs of the decade and beyond, the 56 is my favorite. There are so few left and they are so artistically and culturally important that the discussions here about environmental concerns are very misplaced. It's a 56 Cadillac for goodness sake, it does not get any better than that. One airliner taking off once pollutes more than every rare classic on the road does in a whole year. Fire trucks get 1-2 MPG.

i think it's a rust-out exaust leak somewhere in one of the exahaust lines...manifold, exhaust pipe, muffler, or less likely the tail pipe. i hate to disappoint you. only a small leak produces some big noises.

Offcourse its exhaust leaks, the exhaust is from 1956, and the car have been a daily driver for a long time. So its pretty rusty.

Could you ask your dad if they are Bias or Radials. Then ask him the dimesions and the size of the whites. Those look like 5" whites or maybe bigger?
