@ZoCaaH i think thats the point. Vista was ~3GB of software, out of the box and was slow as shit. Any linux distro is <1GB. Also most computers can run linux (i have it running on a computer with ~500MB of RAM and 20GB HDD and it runs perfectly).
@SuperDave341 Many games that will run on Windows will run on Linux. Steam and the Source engine runs, Lord of the Rings Online runs, Eve Online runs... a lot to choose from. The downside is it's currently a PITA to get them to run, and they won't run on all systems. If they make that process as simple as installing on Windows, they'll be a lot closer to what they want.
@saberswordsmen1 Still, game made for the windows platform are around 4000 games, and game made for linux turn around 200, as a collector or just for a gaming pc, the linux can't be used. Sure you can virtualise windows or try to do comptability but these game were originaly for windows so windows is certaintly the winner for the video game side. I think 4000 game to choose from ranging 1993 to today is much interesing than a few game that is made each year on the linux since 1996
@SuperDave341 STEAM + Source games are often enough to keep many gamers happy (Not to mention the major MMO's will all run under WINE/Cedega without VMware). I agree Linux isn't the go-to platform for games. Just saying that you can indeed be a hardcore gamer and run Linux. Anyway, like I said... you can get a helluva lot of games working on Linux, often with just WINE, but if you're into more obscure games or don't want the PITA, Linux is less attractive. Workable, but not your best option.

@hathiphnath sadly enough the average computer user goes for the eye candy versus the technical specs. only the more experienced user that knows more than just how to check one's email or surf the web goes for the real meat and potatoes of what an OS can do I can't begin to count the # of people bitching because windows starter doesn't have eye candy. they don't mention anything else except the aero effects that home premium has over basic/starter.
@experimental0000 I think 7 starter has exactly two issues. One, you can't change the desktop image (probably has workarounds), two, the more serious issue is that you can't use an external screen. I like Win7. Searchable start menu is great and egde-snapping brings more productive multitasking in a single widescreen. My PC could easily handle aero, yet I turned it off as Win experience is more solid without being distracted seeing your blurred desktop image though your window edges.
Ok lets face Ubuntu has much better looks really come on and may even run smoother (not near as many viruses) but hey windows will always have the upper hand its been around 2 long and ppl love it because it does work

@LordDestros Ok, I guess you really don't want people who don't know anything about LInux to learn, or you're too lazy to give information, or you just don't care, or you're just an ignorant so and so! why did you even bother writing this? Can you read my mind now? %!#$ @#$
Sorry, I assumed you already knew and were merely criticizing the video and others like it. It seems like I misread the tone of your last comment. Five hundred character limits are a pain to deal with so I'll suggest looking up some reviews on recent releases of Ubuntu (e.g.10.04 a.k.a. Karmic Koala) or Linux Mint ("9" a.k.a. Isadora).
@Askar450 Technically speaking, WINE can be considered as running games natively (Wine Is Not an Emulator). That said, one can certainly play games natively even without WINE. The issue isn't the ability to play games but rather the availability of the games themselves. Though there are some nice ones present (e.g. World of Goo and Amnesia: The Dark Descent come to mind), unfortunately there aren't near as many as available on Windows.
@Askar450 I glanced over your "Actually Windows can do what Linux can't and the biggest one that stands out is not being able to play games natively." comment and read: "Actually Linux can do what Windows can't and the biggest one that stands out is not being able to play games natively." and thought that I agree. PC gaming is indeed a HUGE waste of productivity. Then I reread your post and went, damn, that's not what you meant. LOL
@ContaMuir17a "What can Linux do?" It can almost do everything Windows can (surf the web, read mail, write a letter, etc) pretty much the basic stuff. "Does it do it better?" I would say, no, Linux equivalent of Windows programs are less user-friendly or the quality is lower (even if it's free it always comes at a price)."What are the comparability issues? Do you mean compatibility? If so then with hardware it's good but with software not so much.
@ContaMuir17a Virus? Yes, but not many to be considered a threat (though Wine + Windows Virus = bad). Benchmark are pointless due to the fact that Linux has no real native games so the only thing you'd be benchmarking is compiling speed and boot-up time which are meaningless if you were to comparing it to Windows. Unigine Corp has an OpenGL4.0/DX11 benchmark to test your cards performance but this is pointless again as there is no current native games on Linux.
@Askar450 "Yes, but not many to be considered a threat (though Wine + Windows Virus = bad)."
I'm sorry but how is this bad. The only way I can see for Windows software to do any irreversible damage would be if the user runs a trojan through WINE as root that is aware its being run in WINE and hence exploits a previously unknown WINE vulnerability. It would be far easier to simply create a trojan on Linux that does not require WINE than to design something of this nature.
@Askar450 "Benchmark are pointless due to the fact that Linux has no real native games...."
I just mentioned two of them not to mention many Windows games via WINE. That said, computers are used for things other than gaming (and compiling) in case you didn't notice. Places such as Phoronix have plenty of benchmarks available.
@LordDestros check out on youtube LinuxNativeGaming. dude has 39 and counting native linux games including Doom 3 and Quake 4. I agree with your posted reply to the guy.
@minitrueful Windows is nothing compared to Linux. You can do way more in Linux than you can in windows. The only problem is that you may have to get used to the just as good freeware counterparts of many popular windows applications. SO Yeah it can get work done.
@minitrueful, Aside from the eye candy it can get real work done eg High end power user set ups, like those used in the SFX industry; Holywood for instance, Linux has been a choice OS flavour Where I work we use Red Hat & solaris (unix) Linux alows you choices where windows denies them : need administrator privilages when you are the administrator, unable to access device/drive/file user authencity not verified oh and No to allowing you to run with out problems a non-partnered editing programme.
@minitrueful Linux isn't the choice for basic windows users. If you simply use a PC to type or surf the net, stay away from Linux. Linux is a great learning tool for the operation of an operating system. Even more, Linux gives the user significantly more power over the OS than windows does. This, however, also serves as Linux's weakest point. Too much power for someone who doesn't need it only confuses. Linux is great but it's deff. not for everyone.
@AscottW "Linux isn't the choice for basic windows users. If you simply use a PC to type or surf the net, stay away from Linux."
I disagree with this statement. Linux is fine for very basic tasks like this (where the user doesn't need Windows-specific applications). The bigger issue is users such as this setting up Linux on hardware that isn't so Linux-friendly.

I had Vista. It is slow, unstable and not user friendly at ALL.
The last update crashed the computer, then I switched.. to Linux.
it is true, you do not really need anymore knowledge to use Linux than Windows. I'd say it is easier than Windows, because everything is right at hand. Not like in Windows, where everything is thrown randomly, so you have to open 5 windows to alter one setting.
Linux Mint is what Windows will be in ten years from now. Of course then, Linux will have evolved further ;)
@scoony636 Most people do, and most people like what they're used to. It takes something out of the ordinary to switch. Mine was vista. If MS had not cheated me with that "system" i maybe would have run windows still. On the other hand I have run open source software for a long time (2-3 years) before the switch, of course that helps. I mean I can probably still navigate in MS Office fx, but I may have to think a bit more.
Therefore they are basically the same OS, yet their marketing team did a good job to make you guys think it's different. There isn't anything wrong with Vista, or 7, they're fine.
Also the people who advocate Linux the most, are usually noobs or people who haven't used it. I have been using Linux for managing several clusters for years, and using it on my server. It's gr8, but the people who advocate it are noobs, who use ubuntu.
@RenegadeFury but windows 7 are more functional than vista!vista many times get me nervous!i dont know maybe its olso tha fact that i use in vista 32bit home premioum version and in windows 7 the 64bit ultimate
The problem with all Linux operating systems, can't run any games at all... but i agree if you you're only using it for Work, like browsing, watching youtube and stuff like that then Linux is best... I got a laptop and a desktop on the laptop im running Linux Ubuntu 9.02, and on my gaming desktop im running Windows XP(i run XP because it don't got the sercuity problem as 7 and Vista, and it better running old games on it like Diablo ll and CS) So if you're gonna play games on it Choose Windows
It is only a matter of time as open software becomes easier to use and people become more software savy and desire more customization. Windows sucks no matter what version!
why do you steal someone's video and then replace the name and music...
look up WINDOWS VISTA AERO VS LINUS UBUNTU BERYL dont be a dick remove the video and let tearbd2 hand the credit you windows move maker b*tch btw i flaged your video
i f you r fking gamer who no lifes..YES VISTA SUCKS but i know how to use it and i like ir very much if u r 10 year old kid and listen who evere dude says about vista and you like a chilken say it again....
my only problem with Ubuntu was compatibility issues for most games and other programs. Not to bash the effects or anything but its not really even that useful. I mean windows 2k was fine with me. haha
That was a pretty great video. I started reading into Linux seriously after seeing that Sony was removing support for it from my PS3. I think soon I'll be removing Vista from my laptop and installing some form of Ubuntu, since apparently Team Fortress and Bioshock both work moderately well with Wine. Pretty excited.
I still run Windows on my desktop. But for my netbook I installed Leeenux Linux, which is based on Ubuntu Linux. I'm getting to love Linux. Leeenux just does everything I want it to do. And it does it fast. And it's very stable. And it's free ! I'm probably going to install Ubuntu on my desktop. Windows XP... VISTA, 7 etc. is slowly dying. With all the great free software for Linux... and Cloud Computing... who needs Microsoft anymore ? ? ?
@MrMakeman Win7 has less bugs than vista but just to inform you that my windows7 after 3 months of use started to get slow as shit as all windows releases so i need to format my pc now cause i'm waiting 5 minutes for my pc to boot right now.
In the beginning i thought that microsoft did something good with windows 7 but now i know it's just xp stability with a new theme and shity aero,Nothing more.
On the other hand i have an Ubuntu 9.04 on an old pc for over an year now and it boots like new
@Drumboy5165 seven is OKAY. But by far not 'good'. Since it blows your HDD with crap same like Vista and it also does have the same security problems like Vista, poor or? But there are also nice new changes on seven so its not that crappy like Vista. It is 'okay'
@god4488 I like it much more, doesn't crash (yet) and runs a lot smoother with less hardware...I work on Mac and PC both....Macs just suck, PC still has market share, I like Mepis and Ubuntu as well, Redhat didn't do much for me though.
Do you know why are Windows and Mac more popular than linux? Because not all PC owners are nerds with extensive knowledge about systems ... So i would still choose win ou mac
@TheNewSebo That is self extracting, I am talking about the programs where you have to do the make files and CD into the program folder and all that jazz, that is when it can take like 10-20 minutes to install a program.
@TheNewSebo Yeah, I use Debian and I don't know more than the basics. It's far more stable than anything else I've tried, and I just love it. I dual boot with Windows, though, because Wine is still a bit crappy with Photoshop.
@TheNewSebo I tried it... more than once. I just don't like it. Even maybe hate it. I even tried to force me to like it and use it, but it's just impossible for me :(. I find Photoshop so much better and so much more comfortable in so many aspects.
The only thing I could say it's way better in GIMP, is pixel image editing. It handles pixel and lack of transparency better than Photoshop.
You really do not need "extensive" knowledge to use linux. It is a very simple , yet powerful , operating system that is ,now a days , virtually maintenence free.
linux has trouble with exe and msi files but it is faster than windows and u can install a virtual machine on ubuntu then u can run mac windows xp vista 7 and then it compitalbe with exe
@Kossrifle Depends. Dual booting doesn't slow you down because they are set in different partitions and while one system is working the other one is not "ran".
However if you use a virtual PC it does slow you down, because you are running two OS at once.
This is cool but it takes some know-how and a good bit of effort to get all the effects from beryl or compiz-fusion to work inside ubuntu. I'll still take Linux over Windows anyday lol

The issue is this is too vague (e.g. like asking "What can Windows do?"). There are plenty of reviews of various Linux distributions.

Opinionated.
"...comparability issues?"
Not sure what you mean here.
"Virus vulnerabilities?"
I suppose this could be mentioned more often but there simply aren't many exploits in the wild.

Usually done on paper. The main ones in video format are boot up times.

I hav Vista, and it's fine and all, but Linux wins. Anythings Vista does(other than run .exe files), Linux can do for free, and just as well.
cela0811 1 year ago 2
I had Vista. It is slow, unstable and not user friendly at ALL.
The last update crashed the computer, then I switched.. to Linux.
it is true, you do not really need anymore knowledge to use Linux than Windows. I'd say it is easier than Windows, because everything is right at hand. Not like in Windows, where everything is thrown randomly, so you have to open 5 windows to alter one setting.
Linux Mint is what Windows will be in ten years from now. Of course then, Linux will have evolved further ;)

scoony636 1 year ago
@scoony636 Most people do, and most people like what they're used to. It takes something out of the ordinary to switch. Mine was vista. If MS had not cheated me with that "system" i maybe would have run windows still. On the other hand I have run open source software for a long time (2-3 years) before the switch, of course that helps. I mean I can probably still navigate in MS Office fx, but I may have to think a bit more.

U guys are faggots
Windows 7 has the same driver base as Vista.

I Installed Ubuntu for my 7 YEARS OLD nephew and he is using it with ease.
He is playing games, surfing the youtube for kid movies and e.t.c.
I'm impressed cause he is too young to use a pc but if he can wtf is your problem ...
Just give Linux a try and you won't regret it, i promise ...

Nice touch at the end there. lol

sirvulcan12 1 year ago
@MrMakeman Win7 has less bugs than vista but just to inform you that my windows7 after 3 months of use started to get slow as shit as all windows releases so i need to format my pc now cause i'm waiting 5 minutes for my pc to boot right now.
In the beginning i thought that microsoft did something good with windows 7 but now i know it's just xp stability with a new theme and shity aero,Nothing more.
On the other hand i have an Ubuntu 9.04 on an old pc for over an year now and it boots like new
RAZcracK 1 year ago
@MrMakeman 7 is good...vista blows goats!
Drumboy5165 1 year ago
@Drumboy5165 seven is OKAY. But by far not 'good'. Since it blows your HDD with crap same like Vista and it also does have the same security problems like Vista, poor or? But there are also nice new changes on seven so its not that crappy like Vista. It is 'okay'
god4488 1 year ago
@god4488 I like it much more, doesn't crash (yet) and runs a lot smoother with less hardware...I work on Mac and PC both....Macs just suck, PC still has market share, I like Mepis and Ubuntu as well, Redhat didn't do much for me though.

You dont need extenisve knowledge to use linux. Im using ubuntu without being a coder or programmer, so what??
TheNewSebo 1 year ago 24
@TheNewSebo This is true, but try installing a package that is not in the Ubuntu software center, and is not self extracting, that can be a bitch.
blink1420 1 year ago
@blink1420 Doubleclick on the debian package and click install
all done^^
TheNewSebo 1 year ago
@TheNewSebo That is self extracting, I am talking about the programs where you have to do the make files and CD into the program folder and all that jazz, that is when it can take like 10-20 minutes to install a program.
blink1420 1 year ago
@blink1420 debian is not self extracting. it is the standart method to install programs in ubuntu^^ (like self extracting files + setups under win)
you are talking about source code. if i give you the source code of a program under windows, it wont be easier to install it.
TheNewSebo 1 year ago
@blink1420 LoL "Install-Next-Next-Finish" man ... LoL
Just you use terminal and you type two fucking simple words "make install" and yes people is that simple ...
RAZcracK 1 year ago
@TheNewSebo Yeah, I use Debian and I don't know more than the basics. It's far more stable than anything else I've tried, and I just love it. I dual boot with Windows, though, because Wine is still a bit crappy with Photoshop.
PawBadReligion 1 year ago
@PawBadReligion try out GIMP, its a free and open-source picture editing program just like photoshop. I know some people who say its even better
TheNewSebo 1 year ago
@TheNewSebo I tried it... more than once. I just don't like it. Even maybe hate it. I even tried to force me to like it and use it, but it's just impossible for me :(. I find Photoshop so much better and so much more comfortable in so many aspects.
The only thing I could say it's way better in GIMP, is pixel image editing. It handles pixel and lack of transparency better than Photoshop.
PawBadReligion 1 year ago
@TheNewSebo, I'm a coder, but I already used Linux before I became one.

You really do not need "extensive" knowledge to use linux. It is a very simple , yet powerful , operating system that is ,now a days , virtually maintenence free.

everything i tried to run in wine did not work...
Oggy250 1 year ago
Yeah...then running two operating systems doesn't slow you down?
Kossrifle 1 year ago
@Kossrifle Depends. Dual booting doesn't slow you down because they are set in different partitions and while one system is working the other one is not "ran".
However if you use a virtual PC it does slow you down, because you are running two OS at once.
PawBadReligion 1 year ago
This is cool but it takes some know-how and a good bit of effort to get all the effects from beryl or compiz-fusion to work inside ubuntu. I'll still take Linux over Windows anyday lol
