  • sorry only 5 horses!

  • It's not strange at all. Other owners and trainers wanted nothing to do with the big guy. For instance, two very good 3-year-olds that year, Linda's Chief and Stop the Music, were horses that SECRETARIAT had repeatedly beaten when they were two, and both of their trainers publicly said that they didn't want their horses to face them again ever. Small fields when great horses are present is not historically uncommon. Consider for instance the 1967 Woodward as just one example.

  • How come theres only 6 horses?? Seems a bit strange to me.

  • @ktayor1

If you watch the Belmont Stakes, it frequently has a small field running. It costs money to enter a horse in a race, and if the owner thinks their horse doesn't stand a chance, why waste the money?

  • @ktayor1 Most horses can't run that distance, especially three year olds, who wanted to run against Secratariat?

  • the awesome power of secretariat was truly amazing definately the greatest racehorse bar none of all time

  • You speak as if your a authority on "roids".

  • I love the absolute AMAZEMENT in the announcer's voice...Watching this on tv with my dad (I was 12)is something I will always remember...

  • wow.. that's all i can say. amazing.

  • Greatest race I ever saw. One of the most phenomenal athletic (yes, athletic) performances of all time. I was 9 years old and watched it one TV, but I still get a thrill from hearing the call of the race and seeing it again.

  • Next to the U.S.A. victory over the Russians in 1980, the greatest sporting event I've ever seen in my life. Both occasions bring me to tears - they are so great.

  • I just love hearing the announcer say, "He is moving like a tremendous machine!" That is absolutely the best part!! Thanks for posting

  • I missed it. We had a blackout just as he stepped onto the track for the post parade.

  • I was Eight years old and witnessed it in person.

  • I'll never get tired of seeing this race.

  • good god!
