Cause he was coerced into killing the clan by Madara Uchiha who convinced him and was right about two things. One: Konoha had practically enslaved his family. Two: They were ready to rebel and destroy everything that Konoha was. In that light, Itachi took the only reasonable path he could, kill his family, stop the massacre and save his brother who is the only person he ever cared about. Then when it came down to their fight, he used it for Sasuke to free him from the lies through death.

he killed the uciha members because he was ordered to do this because the uciha clan had meny rebels and they could've made a ninja war , itachi pllanned sasukes life all the time he was a spy in the akatsuky order and he was a good character and he was the strongest :) omfg why did itachi died T_T

2:19 when Itachi says "They would be proud of you". Does he mean the Uchiha clan as a whole because he thinks Sasuke agree's with their ideals about the Hidden Leaf. Also Itachi by no means was the strongest because he could not defeat Madara or he would have and he was terminally ill.
