there are some among us whose heart and soul are wide open, and among those there a few who live with this and so share it with the rest, so that we may undestand ourselves
Problem is Steve sang with his eyes open, you sing a Townes song you have to try real hard to feel more than just sing. Steve and a lot of people were close to Van Zandt, nobody really knows except his real friends... Townes once he learned the sun was burning out decided to beat the sun, sadly he did so but left us with some great music. His music did not even have to ryhme to have flow. Townes said it himself, his life was not a plan to stick around long, that is not a quote so go easy.
Maybe the sour notes are just "twanging" and believe it or not a type of ornamentation. He can carry a tune so I presume he can hear the notes, so they must be there to help create an effect.
I didn't like this version at first, but it has grown on me. The sour guitar notes seem to do the song a melancholy justice. I don't think anyone idolized Townes more than Steve Earle. This version would certainly make TVZ proud.
Willie and Bo loyal friends RIP and friends of me RIP. On my death bed I will remember them. May there fields always be green and the sun always shine. My heart was broken.
steve sings with such a cowboy swagger but i first heard it sang by the man who penned it on bluebird cafe and it just seems to resonate something special with me
@BucksOwin even better than the REAL thing? i happen to disagree. i have yet to see a townes cover, done better than the original, and i have heard them all (recorded ones). snowing on raton by david munyon and mr. gold and mr. mudd by robert keen come close in my opinion. there is only but one townes, and steve is his prophet, amen.
@B1oodMeridian Me too, but I also love Willie's and Townes' versions. I can't choose which 1 is "best", it depends on my mood. BTW, is there possibly any musician that's more underrated than Steve Earl??? Maybe "underrated" isn't the right word......Maybe I mean "unrecognized" or deserving of attention. The guy is as talented as they come, but doesn't get 1/100,000th the attention as Justin Beiber, Lady Gaga, etc. Different genres I know, but good is good, & Earle is fan'freak'n'tabulous!!!
Have been listening to this legend.... Before this legend becomes an angel in heaven for us all I will see him one way or another... MISSOULA MT here I COME
the best music are the unplugged songs. Like when Kurt Cobain sand unplugged on mtv. The raw and real unfiltered uncorrected, auto tuned bullshit is vomit. Townes is in the music video, playing guitar and singing, beer cans all around him, lol. Townes said he just wanted to write great songs, he never finished a song until it was perfect. He was the real deal, no one comes close. Check out "kathleen" it will make you tremble.
SE was born about 10 years too late. He would have been a superstar if he had of been doing his stuff in the 60's/ 70's. Can you imagine how his songs would have resonated during the Vietnam war?. The tunes he would have penned?. It boggles my mind. A truly great talent.
I think he was born just in time... we need him now when there are so few out there writing political music. You are right, though, that he would probably have been bigger had his music come out 10 or 15 years earlier.
No one adopts a song better than Steve - except maybe Jimmie Dale Gilmore - and I have never heard him sing Pancho and Lefty. I bet it would be great too.

we love you steve but where is all your protest shit ...now that your liberal man is in charge ?? is war ok now ?? since a liberal is sending our kids to die..oh thats ok now
funny thing is, Obama didnt start the start all the shit and neither did George W Bush. The terrorists started it. The sad part is that in times of war people on the same side tend to turn on each other. God bless Steve & all the American and NATO forces. Since most of us sure as shit wont stand in front of our troops on the front lines, we better stand behind them.
america created the terrorists, with their own stinking money. madamerica knows a thing or two about terrorism, ask the real americans the red indians
love or hate the present situation, that is the hand we're dealt. not all of us arethe rich assholes who created this mess. quit bitchin' and do something to make it better!!
Life is precious. It is sad that people died because of blind hatred. But only mother nature truly has the power to give and take life. We are on this earth but for a short time. Thousands of people die ever year due the her whimsical nature. Just this week a 1000 people died in a earthquake. Perhaps a little perspective, humility, and tolerance could have gone a long way.
I'm not sure it's that simple....didn't the US support Bin Laddin when he served our interests?...Are we not responsible in some large part for his being able to create the havoc he has....And how many more Bin Laddin's have we created since the war began?...I'm one US Vet who knows ALL WARS SUCK and we must get out now.
you are correct, the US sponsored Bin Laden and his mujahideen fighters in Afganistan during the 80's because they were fighting the occupying russian army. Bin Laden was on 'our' side in those days.
I have friends serving with the british forces in Afganistan now, and another friend who worked with an international aid agency there after the russians withdrew.
It's a very complex situation, but as steve himself said, it's the poor boys who have to fight the rich man's war, on both sides.
So very true. It is rare to find such an intelligent observation on YouTube !
Now as for the vid (after all that is what the comments section is for I suppose) I have to say I find Willie Nelson does it better. Always good to have other artist's renditions to compare so thanks to you, karlsenguitar, for posting this rendition of a great song.
It's a small world. I thought the lad doing support was very good, shame the sound system let him down but he carried it well, and i was relieved that the guys doing the sound picked up their game when Steve came on.
I only saw the tour advertised by chance in the guardian's guide section, glad i did now. The live version of this song made my hair stand on end, fantastic, i shall definately make the effort to see him again.
I wish I could say the same, I´m 32 and I never saw him live, but this saturday it would be the day, i´m gonna travel from Lisbon to Barcelona just for that.
wow! I read an interview with Steve Earle when he was talking about releasing this record but had totally forgotten about it. I love Townes. Need to check this record out. What a great version of this song!
Townes was one who helped Steve when Steve was very young. Steve cherished Townes' friendship & learned a great deal from him & grew into a fine singer/songwriter.
A lot of people are saying that this isn't what they expected. Let the artist tell us the story. It isn't for you to say. This is Steve's interpretation of his hero. I find it quite inspirational.
I'm sorry to be Simon.... but I just think the arrangement were bad and the singing wasn't as good as it could have been, and don't kill me, I love Steve, and I love Townes, I just expected more from Steve in a tribute album.
you've listened to townes. it came out on may 12 but you left this comment like a week before... thanks for supporting a great artist like steve earle by illeagally download his new album a week in advance you asshole...
Give the album a chance: obviously, it's a great artist covering a great artist. He started out by doing the songs with just voice and acoustic guitar, the way he remembered Townes doing them live (not based on Townes' albums), and then he added other instruments, arranged like an eclectic Steve Earle acoustic albums. If you like like SE and Townes, it should really grow on you. It's growing on me!!!
It would be reallllly weird. Makes one wonder with all the perfection here around youtube, how they have the time to take time out of their song writing & musical lives that they'd even have time to gage someone elses work? W O W
first of all its called a cover he did what hardly anyone else does and MADE IT HIS OWN... Listen to his other music it is inspiring... \you fucktard

funny thing is, Obama didnt start the start all the shit and neither did George W Bush.

I'm not sure it's that simple....didn't the US support Bin Laddin when he served our interests?...Are we not responsible in some large part for his being able to create the havoc he has....And how many more Bin Laddin's have we created since the war began?...I'm one US Vet who knows ALL WARS SUCK and we must get out now.
boomac62 2 years ago 3
you are correct, the US sponsored Bin Laden and his mujahideen fighters in Afganistan during the 80's because they were fighting the occupying russian army.

Always good to have other artist's renditions to compare so thanks to you, karlsenguitar, for posting this rendition of a great song.

were you at his concert in Derby then rich?
Fantastic show, i've waited 20 years to see steve earle live, and i wasn't disappointed.
basilseal 2 years ago
yes we were in derby
he was on form last night , i enjoy the chat as much as the music, Have seen steve maybe 5 or 6 times now
Support was good and i liked it when he dumped the applification cos of the problems and sang accoustically
richc101 2 years ago
It's a small world. I thought the lad doing support was very good, shame the sound system let him down but he carried it well, and i was relieved that the guys doing the sound picked up their game when Steve came on.
I only saw the tour advertised by chance in the guardian's guide section, glad i did now. The live version of this song made my hair stand on end, fantastic, i shall definately make the effort to see him again.
basilseal 2 years ago
I wish I could say the same, I´m 32 and I never saw him live, but this saturday it would be the day, i´m gonna travel from Lisbon to Barcelona just for that.

Such a heavy rendition. You can hear the weight of Townes and Earls relationship. So impressive... So true. Im blown away.

Townes was one who helped Steve when Steve was very young. Steve cherished Townes' friendship & learned a great deal from him & grew into a fine singer/songwriter.
Bdasef 2 years ago
I've seen Earle do this live recently ... let me tell you, the man opened a vein that night and let it all flow out ... it was amazing.
He's doing it as a tribute to the way TOWNES did the songs. Little or no production ... just the words and the music.
I've been listening to the CD for weeks now and I like it more with each rotation.

This is one of the best versions I've heard.

A lot of people are saying that this isn't what they expected. Let the artist tell us the story. It isn't for you to say. This is Steve's interpretation of his hero. I find it quite inspirational.

I'm sorry to be Simon.... but I just think the arrangement were bad and the singing wasn't as good as it could have been, and don't kill me, I love Steve, and I love Townes, I just expected more from Steve in a tribute album.

ha i love how pissed off you can make people on you tube!!! but seriously great song, great album, great artist.
gehlerthuck 2 years ago
Give the album a chance: obviously, it's a great artist covering a great artist. He started out by doing the songs with just voice and acoustic guitar, the way he remembered Townes doing them live (not based on Townes' albums), and then he added other instruments, arranged like an eclectic Steve Earle acoustic albums. If you like like SE and Townes, it should really grow on you. It's growing on me!!!

It would be reallllly weird. Makes one wonder with all the perfection here around youtube, how they have the time to take time out of their song writing & musical lives that they'd even have time to gage someone elses work? W O W
