no your wrong. take off the resonance head will sound fatter but the sustains is bad. but some ppl prefer using single headed tom for heavy metal. Its personal preference.

bro why u dint take out the resonance head. if u take out it will sound nice fat tom tom sound.
If you take off the resonant head it sounds terrible. If you want it to sound fat just tune it that way.
