Looks like a fun event for sure, but why the obsession with these gimicky, lame variations? Zombie seems interesting, Kill The King can be fun (though theres little competetive value I think) but 360 combat? Seriously? Why not focus on proper 2v2, 1v1, 5v5 pure, skillful combat.
Also, I agree with what niall and jim said - you should watch the ejc fight night ( j.tv ), especially JJ and Flo (who unfortunately had a super droppy night), to see how combat should be played.
@amuellermathtuberlin I guess I agree. The rounds of Kill the king never seem to last very long and it isn't neccesarily about skill as much as luck. 360s combat also tests who is the best juggler outside of combat though.
@amuellermathtuberlin ... area was very restrictive, which might explain abit of the aggression. There really isn't very much indiscriminate swinging like someone said. I've played combat at the EJC twice, and it's not as tame as people here make it out to be, especially late at night when the kids/beginners aren't around any more. JJ and Flo are not your typical combat player, although it would be awesme if they were. I had my worst injury playing combat in Karlsruhe.. of course I continued :)
@amuellermathtuberlin It is not so much an obsession with these variations, but those chosen by the MLC after trial and error at several north american fests. I don't like them all, but sumo is fun (resembles fencing a bit, exemplified in this clip) and 360's is really hectic and fun to play. At Turbo the play..
I'm just curious if combat is always played so aggressively in North America? My only experience is from European conventions where its frowned upon to use such force or swinging indiscriminately since you don't want to risk putting performers temporarily out of business :)
It /is/ pretty ruthless, but normally not this crazy. Quebec players tend to pretty violent especially, the first time I went to Turbo I almost lost a finger or two!
It's not as aggressive in Southern Ontario nor (I reckon) most of the States
@niallercom I could not agree more. I love combat (gladiators) and am very glad to see it being played more and having more importance in world wide juggling. But I don't like seeing that ruff style of combat. This lacks in the tecnique and grace the other events are full of. When I was learning how to play Combat (gladiators) at EJC I was often stopped for playing in this ruff way. That style is frowned upon this side of the pond. x
It should be more like fencing. not a bar room brawl. ;-)
