I'm still learning Lester's tunes (Pretty Little Shoes is my latest) and I am grateful for these pieces of history that you're preserving, YewPiney. Thanks, as always.
I don't think I've posted a video of Lester playing Pretty Little Shoes, so will try to do that soon.
Lester is an amazing connection through to that old central W. Va.fiddle tradition. I think most people got that tune from Doc White. It's interesting to hear what the different players did with these pieces.
There are really three sort of intertwined pieces - Pretty Little Shoes, Pretty Little Cat, and Pretty Little Dog.
Lee Triplett said that when he couldn't play Doc White's Pretty Little Shoes right and that he ended up making the two tunes Pretty Little Cat and Pretty Little Dog out of it.
Yeah, I am SO envious! I live in a small community right across the water from Langley AFB.... it is an old fishing community, but I haven't run into too much in the way of real, regional music. I sometimes wish zi could snap my fingers and visit these various places where it is so rich with good fiddle music
I'll send you a message with info, but also do a search and you'll find all kind of info.
Clifftop (Appalachian String Band Festival) is one of the biggest old time festivals. I go early and usually leave about the time the event officially starts.
Glenville is one of the oldest festivals and still has a small town flavor. It is my favorite festival, but can be too low key for some folks.
I love to hear Lester talk about the amazing fiddle players he heard when he was growing up. I know a couple of them were recorded (French Carpenter and Ward Jarvis for sure) but the playing of some only exist in the memories of these few people still around that heard them.
Please keep those Lester tunes comin'...There great!

I have a question to you.
Do you know a fiddle player called Art Wooten or something???
It was ages ago maybe in 1950 ths or early -60ths. He played with Bill Monroe at those times.

Wilson Douglas played all three of those tunes.

Is Lester related to Tressie Faye McCumbers Byard?

She must be. The genealogy I see shows her as being from Nicut (as is Lester) and close to him in age. I'll email Kim and ask.

I'm glad you like it. The number of great fiddle players from that central part of West Virginia is amazing.

You'd better hurry. You'll be surprised how deep you have to dig to find regional music most anywhere these days.
Come to Clifftop this summer. Or the West Virginia State Folk Festival in Glenville for the real old time flavor.

I just mentioned that to my husband. He also thought that that would be a really neat thing to do. What happens at Clifftop?

I've been slow in posting videos lately and felt a little guilty about not posting a music clip, so am glad to know that you liked this one.

I just love listening to him talk about his life. What a sweet person he is. A real inspiration to all aspiring old time fiddlers.
A Great Big Thanks to you for bringing this my way.
