btw - if you want to get tremendous insight into the way we garrison the globe w/ our bases, both of Chalmers Johnson's recent books are excellent: Sorrows of Empire & Nemesis. There is also an excellent interview with him in the series Conversations with History here on YT which nutshells a lot of info from the books. It's an hour, but I think you'll find it one of the more enlightening hours you've spent. His analysis of how these SOFA agreements subjugate our friends & foes alike is spot on.

This all makes sense - we went into Iraq a) to shut off the oil to drive the price up, and b) to get new bases because the Saudis were catching too much heat from having us garrisoned right next to holy sites. Most people did not notice that shortly after we entered Iraq, we quietly shut down our Saudi Arabian bases. This was one of the three principle reasons stated by bin Laden for the 9/11 attacks, btw - so I guess congratulations are in order for him seeing as how he got what he wanted.
