What would life be like in East Germany if it still was among the European nations? I think there could have been many political reforms and other signifcant changes in the whole DDR-system, so things could be much better today. The reunification happened too fast, perhaps the West should have given a real chance to East Germany to renew itself. At least there would be much more freedom in today´s DDR because the USSR is not ruling the east germans anymore. Well, please don´t be angry with this.
@migu70jok4ever I guess many easterners did not have any patience left for socialism anymore by 1989. So, a slower reform program might not have had the popular support it would need to succeed. Gorbachev tried it in the USSR and it led to the dissolution of the socialist regime. At least the east Germans did not end up in the total anarchy which was Russia in the early 90s. But I agree with you that the way the re-unification happened was less than ideal.

It is so sad how the DDR was steamrolled during reunification, every cultural item being swept under the rug for no other reason than it was "East" German. Very shortsighted of the West German government and the East German government for throwing the towel in so easily. The people of the DDR deserved better than that. Auferstanden remains the most beautiful national anthem. What does it say about Deutschlandleid when the first two stanzas have been outlawed for official use?

Und das Abspielen der Nationalhymne war weder zum Sendestart noch zum Sendeschluss üblich - das kam erst im Januar 1990 auf. Und die Komponisten von Erkennungsmelodien wären weiß Gott nie so einfallslos gewesen, die Nationalhymne als Jingle zu benutzen. Gesprochener und geschriebener Text sind behelfsmäßig übersetzt aus dem Englischen. Typisch dafür: "Dies ist Fernsehen der DDR"
i miss the old east germany, ESPECIALLY where its military forces were concerned. i REALLY enjoy seeing photos and footage of east german air force mig 21 and mig 29 fighters - they are AWESOME!!!!! i also miss the old east german and soviet olympic teams as well. yes, they were using steroids and yes they did engage in blood doping which was wrong! nevertheless, their olympic teams were GREAT!! i also DIG the east german national anthem, flag, and national emblem.
Nicely done! Although, it never looked like this! More subdued. When I left DDR in 1970s, things were more strict...no jeans, no long hair, no hippie styles. We had DDR1 and DDR2 stations only. Most of the programming was Communist propaganda, but most shows were educational and fun to watch. I especially enjoyed "Aktuelle Kamera". Wish we had this kind of video to watch then!
I was always fascinated by West- and Ost-Berlin. The capitalistic state inside of communistic. Those people would have to feel a little cramped even they were in 'free' block. Hmm. I remember bull parking of Trabis and Wartburgs in Doksy, by Macha See (Machovo jezero) in Czechoslovakia. It was very popular destination of DDR people. And I lived there! :)))

@factor6 Ah, the Tschechs...this was very impressive moderization. But which station in DDR? I do not recall Fernsehen DDR. Just DDR1 and DDR2 Fernsehen. I am nostalgic for old days in DDR as child. But not as adult. The FDJ was impressive and wonderful for me. Some Ami once asked me "What is the difference between the FDJ and HJ (Hitler Jugend) I replied, "The ideologies and letters."
Though I personally beleive the DDR was anything but democratic, it still is a very important part of German history. It truly was a bulwork state during a fascinating and dangerous era; A proud people in a proud state. Great job on this sign on; Makes you wonder what DFF would be like today if it was still on the air and controlled by the state...

It is so sad how the DDR was steamrolled during reunification, every cultural item being swept under the rug for no other reason than it was "East" German. Very shortsighted of the West German government and the East German government for throwing the towel in so easily. The people of the DDR deserved better than that. Auferstanden remains the most beautiful national anthem. What does it say about Deutschlandleid when the first two stanzas have been outlawed for official use?

@u01mph Hehe, I probably say it from the perspective of a man who has far too much time on his hands ^_^ Really I'm neither for nor against Socialism, though it is an ideology for which I have a great deal of respect and certainly wouldn't oppose. But it is because I respect 'Socialism' that I hate to see people label these dreadful Stalinist/Red-Fascist dictatorships, such as the GDR, as 'Socialist' or 'Communist' states (the very existence of a Communist "State" being itself a paradox).

Went there in 1985 to East Berlin for the day , 20 lads on the ale for the day ! just took the piss out of the police and army all day , some old bastard lectured me and was told where to go ! good laugh for us but what a backward shit hole !

Auf den ersten Blick nett gemacht. Aber:das DDR-Fernsehen hat nie um 6 Uhr den Sendebetrieb gestartet. Und das Abspielen der Nationalhymne war weder zum Sendestart noch zum Sendeschluss üblich - das kam erst im Januar 1990 auf. Und die Komponisten von Erkennungsmelodien wären weiß Gott nie so einfallslos gewesen, die Nationalhymne als Jingle zu benutzen. Gesprochener und geschriebener Text sind behelfsmäßig übersetzt aus dem Englischen. Typisch dafür: "Dies ist Fernsehen der DDR"

i miss the old east germany, ESPECIALLY where its military forces were concerned. i REALLY enjoy seeing photos and footage of east german air force mig 21 and mig 29 fighters - they are AWESOME!!!!! i also miss the old east german and soviet olympic teams as well. yes, they were using steroids and yes they did engage in blood doping which was wrong! nevertheless, their olympic teams were GREAT!! i also DIG the east german national anthem, flag, and national emblem.

Nicely done! Although, it never looked like this! More subdued. When I left DDR in 1970s, things were more strict...no jeans, no long hair, no hippie styles. We had DDR1 and DDR2 stations only. Most of the programming was Communist propaganda, but most shows were educational and fun to watch. I especially enjoyed "Aktuelle Kamera". Wish we had this kind of video to watch then!

I was always fascinated by West- and Ost-Berlin. The capitalistic state inside of communistic. Those people would have to feel a little cramped even they were in 'free' block. Hmm. I remember bull parking of Trabis and Wartburgs in Doksy, by Macha See (Machovo jezero) in Czechoslovakia. It was very popular destination of DDR people. And I lived there! :)))

@factor6 This ist very good! The opening is real to when they show meeting in Brussel...not Brussel but Berlin! I do remember waking up to watch Fernsehen DDR! DDR Morgen und Aktuelle Kamera were good programmes. We used to have joke about what DDR really mean: Das Dritte Reich.

@factor6 Ah, the Tschechs...this was very impressive moderization. But which station in DDR? I do not recall Fernsehen DDR. Just DDR1 and DDR2 Fernsehen. I am nostalgic for old days in DDR as child. But not as adult. The FDJ was impressive and wonderful for me. Some Ami once asked me "What is the difference between the FDJ and HJ (Hitler Jugend) I replied, "The ideologies and letters."

Though I personally beleive the DDR was anything but democratic, it still is a very important part of German history. It truly was a bulwork state during a fascinating and dangerous era; A proud people in a proud state. Great job on this sign on; Makes you wonder what DFF would be like today if it was still on the air and controlled by the state...
