This isnt even bad, go watch Muay Thai fights from Thailand or any MMA fight. When you decide to be a fighter you do it knowing you can get injured. When you see an opportunity to finish, you take it and thats what happened here.
The guy was knocked out by the second left to the jaw and Dicky hit him with about 6 more punches. Referee was slow as fuck and should have saved the guy 3 or 4 of those further punches; the fact that he got hit with the last 2 was just awful. That was really dangerous refereeing. The fighter was in the middle of fighting and being aggressive. Its the ref's job to be the objective one in control.
I was there that night. Hard to believe it was 30 years ago!
Dicky actually grabbed the mirophone form the ring announcer and said something to the effect that " I hope Alan is okay, nobody wants to see anyone hurt like that"
He was really very concerned about Alan's well-being. Pretty classy.
Also, when Dicky fought Alan's brother Chris ( who was an excellent boxer and coulda gone places) it's my opinion that he didn't fight as hard as he could have.

@88stockmj It's the referee's job to determine when a fight needs to stop. Fighters have lost fights by showing mercy, so they rely on the referee to make that critical determination. If you aren't familiar with that concept, you're not familiar with fight sports.

Yes, sometimes fighters backed out from a beating, asking the ref to stop the fight, but have you ever been in a fight? you get so into the fight, that when you have a guy hurt.........you aren't thinking of his safety, you are thinking of making sure he is not able to continue and possibly make a comeback on you. As the newsman said .."were was the ref?". He didn't say "why did Ecklund continue to hit him?"

Concerning the knock out, it looks like the devastating gut shot both caused Clarke's hands to come down and stunned Clarke for a split second. Dick took the opportunity to throw a couple hooks to the head and Clarke was out on his feet.
Ref stopped it promptly, but didn't smother Dick like he should have.
Luckily Dicky wasn't a power puncher if that was Micky that guy would have been dead, that ref is horrible, the best ref at the time was Judge Mills Lane he wasn't afraid to jump in through exchanges to stop a fight.
The ref was a lousy racist. He just wanted to see a white guy get beaten silly. Totally uncool and unfair. BTW I'm a smelly tea bagger and I want my country back. FUCK YEAHHHHHHH!
Eklund gave his opponent a good crack. Real hero in there. Fighting, it's a helluva drug.

But it is certainly not an excuse for unrestrained savagery.
For example Muhammed Ali rightfully told the ref to stop the fight in the 7th round of his second bout against Jerry Quarry.
In this case Clarke was clearly being held up only by the ropes. He was probably already unconcious for most of those last blows.
The ref was too slow, but Eklund bears some blame too.
