Cook has as much talent, if not more talent, than archie. they're both very different, but they are both insanely talented. if you ask me, both deserve a standing ovation. both deserve all the love in the world, and if anyone can't accept that both are amazing, then deal with it. because david cook won, and david archuleta is the runner up. and both deserve first and second place. if there was a year for a tie, it was this one.
Perhaps American Idol can facilitate vocal comparison better by having the contestants sing the same thing like this. As for DC "winning", it's DA who "won" a unanimous judge decision as the best singer of season 7, it's DA who received the loudest, longest, unprompted receptions from nearly all live tour audiences, and DA who is selling his songs very well to the public. He IS the winner. The problem with DC is that he isn't unique or distinguishable from other rockers.
Both are good performers but Archie doesn't just sing a song he feels his songs and it always comes out that way. He will be around a long time because of his ability to make people feel.
david archuleta sang this song beautifully... in the way where it inspires you and makes you feel proud to be an american. his voice was the heart of this song. i like cook- but archuleta has the voice to light a thousand candles in an instant.
Listen to the echo effect that Archie has in his version. Cook did not get that benefit. Archie sounds like he is singing in a bathroom! One can do wonders with sound effects... can make you sound better or worse than you really are. Also, Archie hit an awfully bad note in the middle. It came out loud and clear.
David beat Cook on this one, folks. Hands down! No contest. His version was beautiful, soaring, passionate. Cook came out flat, then picked it up, finished fairly well. Archuleta's version, though, was out of the park!
You can really tell when you listen to the crowd reaction to both. Crazy for David, relative silence for Cook. One guy didn't have a favorite on Idol, was at the Jazz game, became a BIG fan on the spot. He said David Archuleta's voice just FILLED the arena, that he was AWESOME!

Like many of the current "singers" in the top pop 20, take away the loud guitar/drums, voice synthesizers, backup singers, makeup/hairstyle and you get the equivalent of DC or worse. I will say that DC is a great, great showman, a super nice guy, likeable, & good at loud rock, but he's no DA. DA's pure talent, versatility, and looks are quite rare. We will soon see more of that versatility in his first pop album.

Tabsmay: I noticed the same thing. Especially when DA sang "and the rockets red glare", the audience went crazy! When DC sang the same verse, there was silence. His version was very flat and unemotional.

It's up to us to choose the real winner with our pocketbooks. I intend to buy whatever DA records, not only for me but everyone in my family. Cook doesn't compare. I have to think he knows it. DA is gracious about it which shows both self-confidence and generosity.
Well I give Cook credit for his effort. The Star Spangled Banner just doesn't fit his voice. Plus, it's a very hard song to sing. The beginning was a bit flat and pitchy but I really liked the end. Good job Cook.

Me too. Besides the show steering people away from DA in the last 3 weeks, on finals night I had 2 phones redialing the same number for David. One cell got busy signals 4X more than the other cell (different carriers). Meanwhile, at least 12 of my calls were "given" by the system to DC, which is a double whammy. Doesn't take many voters to add up to 12M misfires like I had. What's up with that?
I totally agree with your comments here. Someone or an organization must be manipulating the whole show for personal gain or profit. The results is not true and not transparent. Everyone knows who is better and who deserves to win
Thanks for the interesting video. This proves that David A has a pure voice with or without accompaniment. Far more superior in musicality. no question. Either ppl are tone deaf or just stuck to their belief of who their idol is regardless they can sing the anthem well or not. With being the winner, the expectation for a high caliber performance is greater. Sry,DC fans... He did not deliver well this time.

HAHAHA. No offence... but Archie has a good voice and all but HE is the one who is limited. He can ONLY sing Ballads. Slow boring songs. I like his voice and he's good but he bores me. He is nice though. David A. has only done slow songs. He ATTEMPTED With You, and sucked. He also had a MASSIVE advantage because he has a way higher voice than Cook. SO he could sing it very easily. u know nothing about vocal technique. everyone has a different range. archie is a tenor, cook is a baritone. cook should sing the song a key lower than archie to fit his range. but the problem is, cook doesnt have alot of range and he has bad vocal technique. seriously, cook is a horrible TECHNICAL singer. that is why archie sang the song better. hes a better singer. i dont know why thats so hard to understand. u dont know what singing is if u think david cook is the better singer.

Young David's rendtion of SSB is really soothing... I felt the sincerity in his voice and he put a lot of soul on this. DA's version is definitely no doubt a MASTER CLASS!!!!

Well, I have to agree with randomgen1161a to some degree. We should not allow this silly comparison. There is two totally different situations. Cook was in a star-studded atmosphere with Jack Nicholson looking at the back of his head while he sang. He said it gave him the creeps. He said it was an honor but did not want to do it again. The only ones that beat Cook in the top 100 were the Beatles with 14 hits. NO ONE ELSE IS EVEN CLOSE. NOT EVEN HALF OF WHAT HE HAS WITH 11.
Archie sang the National Anthem so much better than david c. You can really tell who is the better singer between them. Achie's rendition is so pure and heartfelt that it could give you chills.

Finally!!! A singer who can sing the National Anthem straight up! I didn't like the other versions where the singers change the anthem like it was some type of ugly vocal exhibition. The audio system on this video for Cook sucks though & not enhanced with an echo effect like Archie's. It is too mono which made Cook sound bad. I listened to the echo version and as what the professional writers said, Cook nailed it! Archie's voice is good too but not amazing.
Cook said in interviews before he sang this that he planned on singing it straight with absolutely no variation. He was asked what he would say after he sung and he said "nothing".Other than this, he said his priorities was some children's hospital and being on the Tonight Show. Believe me, this man is super busy and is making a lot of appearances. Also, working on his album that should be out in the fall. I'm sure that is where most of his energy is going. He's a good man.

Personally, I don't care for pop runs or "performing" during the anthem. It is like some people don't realize what they are signing about. Men dying all night, losing hope, but holding on .. is a poor subject to throw some pop trills at.
Archies wasn't too bad in that respect. Jordins was awful. From the mid point on I actually really liked Cooks.
fwiw, that song is harder to sing "straight". Most people "change it up" in places primarily to cut the range and some of the key changes.

Cook was not going for originality with the National Anthem. He was more concerned about not messing up on the words. He sang it straight and respectful. There was no benefit of echoing or muffling to cover his voice. I really don't think he would use this song to impress anyone with his singing abilities. It's just not his personality to do so.

The SSB is such a hard song to sing, especially a capella, so I give them both props for singing it well. Archuleta's nuances and embellishments are what make his voice shine on this song. I like the way Cook hit the note on "free" near the end. It was so pure.

I think it's natural for some Archuleta fans to be a little sore that their guy didn't win, yet is obviously the superior singer. Being a great performer isn't always about flashing lights, big bass and drums, and I think a little over half of America thought it was. Cook is a great performer, that's true. But he was no more deserving of the title than Archuleta. He was just perceived as "cooler." Vocally, Cook just isn't as good, and I think he'd probably admit that. This kind of proves it.
You're are absolutely right soundscene!!!!! Exactly what I have been thinking all through the AI season 7. David C is the great performer and was basically tagged as the "cool" one, but David Archuleta is this really awesome, great singer, very soulful, passionately with music, who puts out his heart and soul out there for us to feel whenever he sings. Regarding the song Hero, I feel that DA was holding back to let DC have the moment. If you know David's character then you know he will do that just out of respect for DC. That's why Archie's fans love him ... as a person and singer!

it SHOULD be changed in certain parts, depending on what the singer wants to do. if everybody sang it exactly the same way, whats the point of having different people sing it? then it should just be the same recording every time. it can be overdone, but i dont think archuleta overdid it. the changes he made, especially the one at "wave" sent chills over my body. it showed off his voice, which is, (lets face it) what everyone is trying to do when they sing it. cook's wasn't bad, but mediocre.

Archuleta is clearly superior- different styles but in all fairness, Cook sounds tired, his voice is spent, like he's in a daze. Archuleta delivers as always, clear, precise, on pitch, melodic. This guy an sing!!

An interesting thing to note in the videos is the amount of cheers DURING the singing. Are those Utah fans just WAAAAY rowdier than the fans in LA?

Like many of the current "singers" in the top pop 20, take away the loud guitar/drums, voice synthesizers, backup singers, makeup/hairstyle and you get the equivalent of DC or worse. I will say that DC is a great, great showman, a super nice guy, likeable, & good at loud rock, but he's no DA. DA's pure talent, versatility, and looks are quite rare. We will soon see more of that versatility in his first pop album.

Wow! I'm not american but your comments about David Cook are hards!!! I watched American Idol '08 and I can say that DC always made the better performance and it was obvious he doesn't have the better voice. Cook made a good job singing the National Anthem!! It's very easy judge! you'd proud!!

Tabsmay: I noticed the same thing. Especially when DA sang "and the rockets red glare", the audience went crazy! When DC sang the same verse, there was silence. His version was very flat and unemotional.

It's up to us to choose the real winner with our pocketbooks. I intend to buy whatever DA records, not only for me but everyone in my family. Cook doesn't compare. I have to think he knows it. DA is gracious about it which shows both self-confidence and generosity.

Well I give Cook credit for his effort. The Star Spangled Banner just doesn't fit his voice. Plus, it's a very hard song to sing. The beginning was a bit flat and pitchy but I really liked the end. Good job Cook.
David Archuleta did a fantastic job in my opinion. His voice really shone and the way he sang "Oh say does that star spangled banner yet wave" blew me away. Loved his rendition!

Me too. Besides the show steering people away from DA in the last 3 weeks, on finals night I had 2 phones redialing the same number for David. One cell got busy signals 4X more than the other cell (different carriers). Meanwhile, at least 12 of my calls were "given" by the system to DC, which is a double whammy. Doesn't take many voters to add up to 12M misfires like I had. What's up with that?

Thanks for the interesting video. This proves that David A has a pure voice with or without accompaniment. Far more superior in musicality. no question. Either ppl are tone deaf or just stuck to their belief of who their idol is regardless they can sing the anthem well or not. With being the winner, the expectation for a high caliber performance is greater. Sry,DC fans... He did not deliver well this time.

HAHAHA. No offence... but Archie has a good voice and all but HE is the one who is limited. He can ONLY sing Ballads. Slow boring songs. I like his voice and he's good but he bores me. He is nice though. David A. has only done slow songs. He ATTEMPTED With You, and sucked. He also had a MASSIVE advantage because he has a way higher voice than Cook. SO he could sing it very easily. But Cook has a man's voice. And a beautiful one! So it's extremely hard for him to sing that. But he still did great

I hate how people say David A. can only sing slow songs, when David Cook can only sing faster songs. Just like here, his slow ballad wasnt good, and during AI, Simon even said when Cook sang "Music Of The Night," he did the best he could with that type of song, which clearly means he cant sing slow songs good. And Cook can;t hit high notes. it was like he was screaming the last words. Michael J. hit high notes and he has a man voice too.!

i agree LuvDaWorld, i love archie's voice, but the problem is that he only shines when he sings slow,ballads which bores me, i mean, its good once in a while but doing it over a period of time is well boring, unlike cook however he shines in practically everything from rock to pop to ballad to country, u name it, everything. But Archie wins this round singing the national anthem.

u know nothing about vocal technique. everyone has a different range. archie is a tenor, cook is a baritone. cook should sing the song a key lower than archie to fit his range. but the problem is, cook doesnt have alot of range and he has bad vocal technique. seriously, cook is a horrible TECHNICAL singer. that is why archie sang the song better. hes a better singer. i dont know why thats so hard to understand. u dont know what singing is if u think david cook is the better singer.

Well, I have to agree with randomgen1161a to some degree. We should not allow this silly comparison. There is two totally different situations. Cook was in a star-studded atmosphere with Jack Nicholson looking at the back of his head while he sang. He said it gave him the creeps. He said it was an honor but did not want to do it again. The only ones that beat Cook in the top 100 were the Beatles with 14 hits. NO ONE ELSE IS EVEN CLOSE. NOT EVEN HALF OF WHAT HE HAS WITH 11.

goboywonder, that is just your opinion. Some thought he nailed it and showed great respect for singing it like he did. I guess I must repeat this again; he had no props such as the echoing. There are varying opinions on this across the internet, not just this uTube bubble that some live in. I think it's funny that Archie fans are using this to make any kind of a point. Cook is singing his face off on all sorts of programs lately and is NOT disappointing his fans.

The best singer of American Idol Season 7 is David Archuleta!!! Archie did an awesome job singing this song; it's very difficult to sing. Good try to Cook; as he may not even wanted to do this, but gave it a shot.:)

Finally!!! A singer who can sing the National Anthem straight up! I didn't like the other versions where the singers change the anthem like it was some type of ugly vocal exhibition. The audio system on this video for Cook sucks though & not enhanced with an echo effect like Archie's. It is too mono which made Cook sound bad. I listened to the echo version and as what the professional writers said, Cook nailed it! Archie's voice is good too but not amazing.

Cook said in interviews before he sang this that he planned on singing it straight with absolutely no variation. He was asked what he would say after he sung and he said "nothing".Other than this, he said his priorities was some children's hospital and being on the Tonight Show. Believe me, this man is super busy and is making a lot of appearances. Also, working on his album that should be out in the fall. I'm sure that is where most of his energy is going. He's a good man.

Personally, I don't care for pop runs or "performing" during the anthem. It is like some people don't realize what they are signing about. Men dying all night, losing hope, but holding on .. is a poor subject to throw some pop trills at.
Archies wasn't too bad in that respect. Jordins was awful. From the mid point on I actually really liked Cooks.
fwiw, that song is harder to sing "straight". Most people "change it up" in places primarily to cut the range and some of the key changes.

Cook was not going for originality with the National Anthem. He was more concerned about not messing up on the words. He sang it straight and respectful. There was no benefit of echoing or muffling to cover his voice. I really don't think he would use this song to impress anyone with his singing abilities. It's just not his personality to do so.

The SSB is such a hard song to sing, especially a capella, so I give them both props for singing it well. Archuleta's nuances and embellishments are what make his voice shine on this song. I like the way Cook hit the note on "free" near the end. It was so pure.

I think it's natural for some Archuleta fans to be a little sore that their guy didn't win, yet is obviously the superior singer. Being a great performer isn't always about flashing lights, big bass and drums, and I think a little over half of America thought it was. Cook is a great performer, that's true. But he was no more deserving of the title than Archuleta. He was just perceived as "cooler." Vocally, Cook just isn't as good, and I think he'd probably admit that. This kind of proves it.

Granted, Cook let his nerves falter the first notes, but other than that, he sang marvelously, as did Archuleta. They can both sing, indubitably.

it SHOULD be changed in certain parts, depending on what the singer wants to do. if everybody sang it exactly the same way, whats the point of having different people sing it? then it should just be the same recording every time. it can be overdone, but i dont think archuleta overdid it. the changes he made, especially the one at "wave" sent chills over my body. it showed off his voice, which is, (lets face it) what everyone is trying to do when they sing it. cook's wasn't bad, but mediocre.

Actually, come to think of it. As I watch the other anthems, I am beginning to dislike how many of them butcher the anthem with runs that you can't even sing along with them in your mind. Cook may be setting a trend here - sing it straight up like it should be! I like it straight! Cook has cookified the national anthem!!! YEAH!!! Yes, Arch has an awesome voice.

Archie just has that gorgeous sound...oh God....it's just so obvious. He's crystal clear and melodious....he's sounds so pitch perfect to me..so sweet to listen to hear...his voice just soars...I think Archie is by far the better one here...

not true! i'm a HUGE fan of david archuleta, but i admire and respect cook as well. i hope they both have successful careers in the music industry!

Cook fans do not need to bash Archie. He is our buddy. Plus Cook is the AI winner, so what for? It's not going to change anything. Archie is also a winner in Cook's and Cook's fans book. We are just enjoying seeing you and people like you make your axe sharper and grind that baby on Cook. Hail, Archie! Cook and Cook fans LOVE Archie! You deserve better fans, Archie. US! A couple of "ouch" moments for Cook, but he pulled it out towards the end. Archuleta's rendition was pretty impressive.

Two different singers, two different versions. If I'm looking for the performance that I felt the most from that would be Archuleta...just my opinion!!!

Archuleta is clearly superior- different styles but in all fairness, Cook sounds tired, his voice is spent, like he's in a daze. Archuleta delivers as always, clear, precise, on pitch, melodic. This guy an sing!!

Archuleta delivered a heartfelt and touching performance of the national anthem. Absolutely beautiful in comparison.

it's pretty bad... BUT just in the beginning... I think the stink is that Cook is being acclaimed as the better of the two because he allegedly won the title. We Archies can hear that our guy is the better of the two..and holds the title of Idol in our hearts... c'mon... 12 Million votes??? I thinkg not
