  • lolllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll you have yourself on your matches

  • MEOW. MEOW. MEOW. MEOW.

  • did he really threw that phosphorus??

  • Ferrocerium is not flint, but lying and simplification are often great teaching tools.

  • it seems contradictory to me that you wear a glove to pick up a match but can easily run your fingers across some scissors :)

  • @timfha I think all of series #1 was contradictory! In series #2 and the series that follow we follow safety rules.

  • meow meow meow....LOL

  • it was my cat... my cat did it XD

  • This is as funny as it is fascinating.

  • The lighter was invented before the match, so it wasnt that hard to get a flame before the invention of the match... -.-

  • all i find odd, is how he puts on a huge glove just to put out that little sparkler, then when he gets out the scissors, he pokes/strokes the blade with his finger..

  • Say phosphorus is expensive, throws bottle of it on the ground -_-

  • you look like luke skywalker. can you build a lightsaber?

  • i thought you blamed the dog not the cat xD

  • You look like Mark Hamill ... that is awesome

  • I cant stop watching your videos lol

  • A matchbox with Bill's photo on it.

  • Oddly, I think my kids' first encounter with "Flint and Steel" was on Minecraft. It "sparked" a discussion on life before matches, the importance of fire to the emerging civilization of mankind, and why dad's part-time fireworks job relies on all this stuff.

We need a mod for that game which teaches how to combine parts to make a light bulb, typewriter, and atomic bomb, right?

  • Cat rilly

  • 0:55 XD

    1:00 Awwwwww!

  • That's nice and all, but it doesn't explain how we got from those phosphorus-on-the-box matches to the modern strike anywhere matches. I think that would be kind of interesting to know.

  • @RobotechMaster2000 actually, safety matches are modern not strike anywhere matches :)

  • 1:31 - That look was priceless!

  • Phosphorous was also a big public health issue - being around the raw materials used to make matches was not good for the health of the workers.

  • The cat did it. Classic

  • How is it possible that this vid has only 13k views.. I've lost my faith in humanity :(

  • Nice cat, lol.

    Looks like my old cat.

  • that's not a real flint it's an artificial flint enriched with chemicals to make big visible sparks, back then they used natural occurring flint rocks that made sparks that are barely visible using a piece of chard cloth there is a complicated process of carefully pampering a barely visible ember into a flame, it's so hard it's not even taught in most survival courses or in the boy scouts

  • this is the best thing i've found in a while

  • Your cat wants food!

  • Kitty

  • KItty

  • KItty

  • Nice video very informative and fun to watch

  • wow, I just found your videos thanks to the MakeBlog. I love your presentation style, subscribed and can't wait for more :)

  • The safety match is a bit like the ball-point pen, so cheap and ubiquitous that we have almost forgotten how marvellous it really is. Few people appreciate what goes into making a good match, they are extremely non-trivial to make, from the treated clear timber stick to the chemicals in the head and striking surface - you could talk about it for hours.
