A lot of people only know Cuevas from losing to Hearns and Duran, but he was a very durable champion with very heavy fists in both hands. He seemed to hit hard with every single punch from every angle and he beat down a lot of opponents.
@marcxopoco Hearns did NOT have a "weak chin"..the ONLY men who ever knocked him out were Ray Leanord and Marvin Hagler, 2 all time greats who knocked out a LOT of fighters. The people who claim that Hearns chin was "weak" really don't know the sport very well. Regarding Hearns fight against Cuevas, if you look at the tape of the fight, you'd see Cuevas was throwing LOTS of punches, especially in the second round..most of them missed. Hearns was simply the better man (obviously.)
I've only read a little bit on Pete Ranzany, but I've read alot about and seen alot of video on Pipino Cuevas. Cuevas was one of the all-time most devastating punchers ever, and Ranzany took everything Cuevas gave him and, even though he did get TKO'd in the 2nd, he got up from both knockdowns and was still on his feet at the time of the stoppage! Ranzany was one tough-as-nails son of a bitch!
NO DEFENSIVE ABILITIES....BAD...VERY BAD. HE LEARNED THE HARD WAY THAT THAT'S NOT THE WAY TO GO. .....DEFENSE IS CRUCIALLY IMPORTANT IN A BOXERS LIFE AS IN ANY OTHER ASPECT OF LIFE. SORRY FOR THIS MAN THAT COULD'VE BEEN A LOThE BETTER.
He was a hitting machine!.. on the first round he threw 3 punches to the body that lifted Ranzany off the ground and by the end of the round 1 Ranzany was much slower because of it. On this fight as in most he fought in the 70s he was fearless and because of it,feared by his opponents. Once his opponents felt the power of his punches they knew it was just a matter of time before they would be hurt by Pipino. I saw Pipino fight live near the end of his in Chicago and the crowd was wild for him!!
Great refereeing - not ! both knockdowns were heavy with ranzanies head snapping back - ok he got up - just. - it should have been stopped with the second knockdown as it was the worst of the two - he took about another dozen powershots to the head that he shouldnt have - the great mills lane always said when a fighters head just flops about its time to stop the fight - the neck muscles have no control to support the head and thats when serious brain damage can occur.
ranzany was the last white boxer to sell tickets in california. he said after the first round, he thought cuevas was easy to beat. and then he said he got cocky because of it, and got caught.
Damn Ranzany was brave! The commentator and the fight takes me back to my childhood and watching the Saturday night fights with my old man. Cuevas hit like a mule! Thanks for posting!!
@lizardman77 because there was no need for a rematch, Hearns almost decapitated Cuevas with his right cross, Cuevas never dealt with anybody of Hearns caliber before, blinding speed and crushing power, plus i think Cuevas fought scared. Styles make fights, ... and Pipino does'nt match up well with Hearns.
C.U.E.V.A.S. = "Pure Intense Power Indeed Nuked Opponents. 'Chilango's' Unique Era Vanished After Seventies"
Yes, the middle to late 70's were Jose's era. This guy from Mexico City ("Chilango") was one of the heaviest hitters of the Welterweights. He was a gentleman too.
Hilarious. Right on, man. I loved Pipino. Crude, yes, but vicious power. Nice to see your comment that he was a gentleman. In other words, a proper sportsman.
this fight was at Hugh's Stadium in Sacto i believe. my dad waited 2 hrs in the rain only to see Pete get tko'd. Pete did beat some quality opponents though, i saw him beat Sal Lopez.
Cuevas was stiff, awkward, completely lacking in defensive skills, and ponderous but, there were few who could punch like him. He kayoed technically better fighters like Angel(Cholo)Espada(3)times, Pete Ranzany, Harold Weston Jr., Clyde Gray, Billy Backus, n outpointed Randy Shields. He did'nt enjoy the popularity or network exposure of Palomino due to being a Mexican national but he was adored by them even after the losses to Hearns and Duran.
@emildon1 That is interesting that you mentioned about beating fighters who are technically better fighters than him. I never really looked at it that way. That is pretty insightful. It reminds me of my former martial arts insrutctor who told me Bruce Lee, in his early years beat guys who had more technique than him due to his sheer speed. Cuevas' power as Bruce Lee's speed is natural and God given talent. Blinding speed, brute power, or great technique, whatever gets the job done I guess.
@emildon1 when he lost with hearns, Thomas Herans was a full middleweight boxer, and Cuevas was Welter weight, was not an even fight back then. However you are right we stil adore him because he was one of the first Mexican boxers who make a lot of money and keep it, he is still a wealthy bussiness men.
Cuevas one of my favorite fighters, along side Duran. When he faced off against Duran it was truly one of the greatest treats for me to see.
It is amazing the prominate champion he was that he never faced Palomino, Benitez, or Leonard. I remember one of Pipino's defenses where Ray Leonard was ringside and was asked about Cuevas as a fighter to which Ray was very complimentery toward Pipino. But with Duran there for a huge payday and Hearns taking Pipino's belt, it was never to be.
Cuevas boxing ability was average, his defence non-existant, but his punching power was the best p4p of all time. No man broke more opponents bones, not duran, not shavers, not tyson.
Palomino was overrated. Cuevez would I think have beaten Trinidad and Mosley and maybe even Delahoya who never has fought well at 147. Cuevez was a great fighter. And Palomino I cannot even say that would go past 5. Carlos had a good chin but was not on a list of great welterweights ever.
I don't think Cueves would have lost to all those guys. Trinidad was overrated with a weak chin. Cueves might have gotten to him. And Mosley might have been stopped by Cuevez. Palomino?? you put him in that list? Cuevez would have easily beaten Palomino. That guy was overrated also. Cueves was the goods.
Cuevas was very limited but overcame his deficiencies with great power. He would have lost to De La Hoya, Curry, Leonard, Mosley, Palomino, Whitaker, Trinidad and most of the other top-notch title holders at 147. He was fun to watch, though.
I was 11 yrs. old when my dad got us in for 5 bucks through a side gate. It was the best time because Sacramento had never hosted a championship fight.
hearns did not destroy cuevas.cuevas beat the count.the round was also about to end.that could've been a battle of monumental proportions had the typical lame ref not stepped in to prevent cuevas from having a (fighting champ's chance),which indeed he was!
Watch the tape. The "lame ref" didn't step in; Cuevas's own corner did, and with good reason. Cuevas, defensively a sitting target for fighters much less capable than Hearns, was getting slaughtered. Yes, he managed to beat the count, but on wobbly legs; I don't think he knew where he was. Years later Cuevas told an interviewer that he didn't know how he'd gotten back to his corner after the beating he'd taken in the first round, let alone in the second.
Lastima que no valoran al pipino como deberian de hacerlo... la pelea contra thomas hearns fue una tragedia pero demuestra que aunque el oponente fue mas grande y fuerte, el pipino no se rajo!!!

LOL. Now we are privileged to have @SUZI1990ful tell us all about boxing.
Hearns had a weak chin. If Cuevas would have thrown some punches against Hearns, it's possible Hearns would have not been able to take them.
Cuevas' 'performance' against Hearns was strange, to say the least.
