Although pop tarts will aid in the insulin spiking, I believe that its ingredients are far too devastating to override the benefits. (High fructose corn syrup, partially hydrogenated soybean oil (raises cholesterol and triglycerides, trans fats).
What do you think of the risk of becoming insuling resistant by using this tactic regularly ??? I think this is a serious issue that you should adress ! Thank you :)
You say in a post that you never drink a shake after workout as this spikes insulin but in your video you say the opposite and eat pop tart and have a protein shake ,please clarify.
Hey doctor your videos are awesome and very informative please keep on making more videos. Can u please clarify this, so after i workout i dont take my protein shake immediately?! Do i take it along with my pop tarts? If u can clarify it for me that would be nice. Thank you!
So I've starting doing resistance, cardio and a 1800 cal plan to try to get healthier, leaner and gain a little muscle. I've watch most of your videos and this is one of those that i'm finding a little odd after reading the following (what do you have to say in regards to it?)..."Exercise, especially resistance training, has been shown to increase GLUT-4 translocation on skeletal muscle in the absence of insulin, meaning after your lift weights you do not need insulin for your muscles to uptake
Do you eat both of the poptarts or just 1? cuz there's two in there. Also after working out you know how you usually have to drink a protein shake immediately after a work out? Well, do you do that or do you save the protein shake until it's time to eat the pop-tart and drink the shake with it? Or do you have to do both as in drink the protein shake immediately after a work out, then when it's time to eat the pop-tarts you consume ANOTHER protein shake?
@xBboyRewindx I eat both...:) cause I am a big guy and need the massive carb influx. I never drink a shake right after training because spiking insulin during or after workouts shuts down the exercise induced IGF-1 production which is responsible for all muscle building properties of growth hormone. That's not good!
@njlaserdoctor This has probably been mentioned already but why are you advising people to eat food with transfat? That's probably the last thing you want to eat in a healthy diet
i meant to say i didnt know this in my previos message and ijust started the poptart i have high hopes for this i know its going but i got to be sure im doing it right
this is a big secret I did know this i just started with the and thanks for the information. hey i would like to know what else can i drink with the pop tarts , Can i drink milk 2% reduced fat (i specify because thats wat i have) or i dont know what else can i drink or i dont have to drink instead eat something else .please help im very intersted.
Hey! I'd like to say you have fantastic information regarding fitness, and I really think it's great that you're deciding to share it via YouTube. I was wondering though, with that "magic window" of 35-45 minutes after your workout, what is considered the end of your workout? Is it as soon as you get off the cardio machine, or is it after your post-workout stretches?
I'm pretty advanced with weight lifting. I cannot tell you how much this has helped me. You are the man, Dr. Perry. I've burned off so much fat employing this method - my fat burning cycle has allowed me to retain a lot more muscle and burn more fat by doing this. I like to shoot for 35 minutes and the results have been spectacular. I don't even count the calories as part of my intake for the day. Pretty spectacular tool to have in your arsenal.
@Serb1anArchangel You gotta eat a lot of honey to get the needed carbs for recovery. Plus, eating healthy has nothing to do with fat loss. Lots of people eat healthy and lose weight (muscle) but not fat. Now I am not saying eat everything that is sweet and 'bad' for ya, BUT I am saying eating sweets at the right time will help you lose fat. Gotta change the paradigm of losing fat into understanding hormones. Plus, if you are going to eat sweets, why not make it help ya?
@njlaserdoctor Thanks for the qucik reply doc. I really appreciate your time and effort to help us out. Now it is clear for me what and when to eat after workout. What's not clear is what and when to eat before workout? Is the pre workout meal also important?
@Serb1anArchangel YES it sure is. It's all important when you are talking nutrition. But again that meal depends on a few things..when are you working out, how long is the workout, what is the workout, what is your goal of the workout. All these factors make a difference.
@njlaserdoctor I want to do a workout which you suggested for fat burning. 5 minutes warming up, 35 minutes pressure workout, 15 minutes, six days a week.
I'm starting this today... I told my sister about it and she thought I was stupid. I had to explain the whole glycogen part and she still looked at me weird, but hey... if it works it works.
@WwalshH haha. Yes well the world is full of people who just don't get it. It's jus physiology. The people who look at you funny are the ones who work out like crazy and never make any changes to their body. You will see and feel a difference. Before long she will be eating her own pop tarts.
Wouldn't the fat in the poptart slow down digestion causing the glycogen to get to your muscles slower than if you were drinking grape juice, eating a banana, or something along those lines?
Great video. I have one question, though. I'm currently on a calorie deficit, as I am on a fat-burning phase. I pretty much keep track of my caloric intake. Should I account for the 400 calories consumed in the poptarts? So if I'm supposed to be eating 2400 calories a day in order to maintain my deficit, does the 400 from the poptarts count, or are they negligible?
I used to drink a can of soda(caffeine free) to boost up my glycogen levels after training. Is this an acceptable alternative if I'm out of Pop Tarts?
Mix and match both. 2-days a week do Tobata and 3-days do steady state. When bulking you want muscle not fat. Tobata is perfect for that...but it can really kick your a**, so throw in a few other days of the other type so you don't grow to hate it. :)
Thanks for the post. Pop Tarts are just one choice. I used that for impact to show how simple carbs are needed. As for cardio after weights, if you do just 5-10 minutes which is all I recommend...there will be no loss of lean muscle. Do the Tobata method for maximum effect. Although cardio in the morning is a good option too and one I agree with as an alternative.
I understand the relationship of gylocgen replenishment and fast acting carbs (simple carbs as apposed to complex carbs), but pop tarts wouldn't be my first, second or third choice for replenishing depeted gylcogen.
What also worries me is doing cardio following an intense workout. You've already delpleted gylcogen stores with the workout, You add cardio, then your body starts canabilizing muscle. So cardio in the am. wait 35mins , replenish - later in day workout, wait 35mins -replenish
Yes wait until after the cardio to take in the carbs. Your window is fine. Nothing wrong with odd. The important thing is that you are doing something.
Thank you for that quick response! Just to clarify, should I wait 30-45 minutes AFTER my run/walk to consume the pop tart/protein combo, or can I do it immediately post-cardio? Basically I will have a 20 min. gap between weights and cardio, and by the time i finish my cardio, my weight lifting will have concluded 45-60 minutes prior. I just wanna get the timing down as best as possible - thank u again!
Dear NJD, I weight train 3 days per week & drive home post-workout for my cardio (often a 30-40 min. walk/run). Takes me 15 min. to arrive home, then I do my cardio. Question is, should I be eating the pop tart/protein combo immediately after my cardio, or have I missed the window because I'm about 1 hour out from my weight training? I know, an odd way of doing it, but i just hate doing cardio on machines. Thank you in advance.
Good question. The fat is so litle it will not effect the body if you are training with any intensity. Your body needs fat. Too many calories makes you fat. Too much of anything makes you fat, even protein.
The premise behind consuming simple sugars after strenuous exercise is that the simple sugars will cause a spike in insulin. Insulin acts as a transport hormone, forcing the macronutrients one consumes to the cells at an accelerated rate, all macros. My question: Since there is more than just simple sugars in a Pop Tart, there is also a large quantity of fat, how does the insulin not transport the fat to create extra adipose tissue regardless of timing?
You could use fruit sure...but high glycemic choices. I recommend candy because it works fast and satisfies cravings as well as builds up glycogen. Post workout is the time to splurge.
guys it doesnt HAVE TO be a pop tart hes just saying to have alot of simple sugars after working out. like you could call it the KapTain CruNCH diet if you wanted. 5stars
Enough to pack in the carbs and replenish your body. Remember it won't go to fat if you time it right. After strenuous resistance training. Each variety of Pop Tart has different levels of fat and carbs. Does not matter whiich one you choose. Have fun eating it! Satisfies cravings and builds muscle. Imagine that?
Pop Tarts are amazing

Both. Good question. Each has 36 grams of carbs and it is best to take in close to 70 so two is perfect. I like the Smores one. lol

what do you think of something like a snikers bar after an intense workout? or would the fat content be a bad thing as it would slow doen digestion?

Snickers are good too. Your body is starving for simple carbs, so the fat content will not make a difference. have at it. Eat away.
