He was a painted and the original bass guitarist of the Beatles for eighteen months,

from January 1960 until June 1961. Sutcliffe earned praise for his paintings.

Sutcliffe played with the Beatles in Hamburg,

where he met photographer Astrid Kirchher,

to whom he was later engaged.
