I saw this tour too...actually, I saw VH with Dave 6 times total... Ice Cream Man was done every time. The fourth time I saw them, Eddie kissed my hand at the end of the song.
I saw this tour...I doubt if any of the bigger acts they went out with wanted these boys in front of them for long...this was 1978, after all....nobody had heard anything like this before
@NYVoice No band was like them live, The Power upon you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. From my experience in videos------------ never was there........ so sad! I need not tell yo.. they and still I hope kick thy ass VH 70s ---No power like them! Rochester, NY is looking for a reunion with them-- sold out I'm sure
@AtomicNog I use Windows Live Movie Maker to open the audio file and add pictures from your hard drive to create a video... Movie Maker has a tab to upload to YouTube...or you can follow the instructions on YouTube...
I saw them on the Sabbath tour. Both bands kicked ass and were well worth the price of admission. Makes no sense blabbing a bunch asinine BS about who's better than who.
I love these older Van Halen songs. So raw and full of power! Check out the demo version of House of Pain. Not at all like the album version, it's simply amazing.
Eddie Van Halen is the most creative guitar player of the album rock era. Page is close, and so is Zappa, but Ed was just ridiculously creative on the first 2 or 3 Van Halen albums.
I can see Gene Simmons on that fateful night he discovered them saying to himself "these guys are going to take over the world" after hearing this song. Please check out my cover version of this song, if you are a guitar player :)
You really can't compare a blues metal band from England to a relentless hard rocking band from California. Both singers have a different vibe, Page and Eddie are way different in styles (Eddie is actually more accurate and less choppy then Jimmy) and VH has one thing Zep doesn't have-Michael Anthony! His bass and background vocals were quite the driving force. Page and Jones weren't so hot on vocals.
You mean on these live tracks only? It IS a little thin. But Eddie said in interviews HE could never hear Mike's bass on stage. His ears handle a certain frequency perhaps. All I know is I and millions of others heard it loud and clear. His vocals? They speak for itself.
@NYVoice Jones was a better bass player than micheal anthony. And bonham was by far the superior drummer of the two groups. Jones and bonham grooved a lot better than van halen's rhythm section. Eddie van halen is a great guitar player but as a band van halen doesnt compare to zeppelin. Besides that robert plant inspired all rock singers after him. He was the first with the really high vocals cutting through heavy guitar. Originators are always better than what follows them.
@zeecezzzy That's true. Led Zeppelin did start off "Rock", and they are creators. But you have to say Van Halen is one of the most influential and succefull bands in Rock History, hands down. They are actually 1 of 6 bands to have 2 Albums go Diamond. and set a record of being the highest paid band in history.. bringing in 1 Million dollars in one night.
@zeecezzzy Although John Bonham is the legendary drummer of the two, I wouldn't say that he is better. Even though Alex took some influence from Bonham, he could still do things that Bonham couldn't. They are both unique in their own way which is kind of hard to compare but, I can see what you mean.
@zeecezzzy Different bands - Zeppelin never did fast shuffles in this vein. I prefer Alex's drumming to Bonhams. Bonham plays too straight. Alex does more offbeat stuff. His main influence was Baker not Bonham. You can hear the influence more clearly in later stuff. You perhaps want to listen to some tracks that influenced Zep before you claim they were vastly more "original" than VH, older bands tend to get away with it cause kids don't listen to blues. All music is somewhat derivative.
@fatShowPony Yes this is true but I would say in general Zeppelin were way more versatile. A lot of their music is blues based but listen to albums like zeppelin 3 and you see that they also were able to pull off folk and later they show a middle eastern influence in their music. VH is more just a straight rock pop band in my opinion. Jimmy page didn't play as fast as Eddie but he played a more musical style of guitar that i prefer and Bonham did way more with a smaller drum set.
@zeecezzzy i don't think pagey's anymore or less verstile than ed, but for someone who likes both bands i really can't say ones better then the other.
You had to have heard this song and the rest of Van Halen 1 back in 1978 to realize how amazing this band was.Eddie was the man---he came out of nowhere, and he blew every other guitarist out of the water. He was so damn sharp and innovative back then. It breaks my heart to see what he's become now. Ed,whatever demons are bugging you,I hope you can get over them once and for all---STOP DRINKIN BRO!!!!!!
now ive seen pretty clear video footage of sabbath during this very tour, just type in black sabbath 1978 and there london performance will pop up, but how is there no fucking van halen footage? it pisses me off, considering van halen shitted on sabbath during this tour wtf why no footage :(
@VanHalenWorshiper I bet you Toni got rid of any videos from VH after they smoked them off the stage. My guess is also that since they were a new band they didn't have the cash for the video crew and they probably figured they could always video some other time. I don't think video was too important to them at the time. Remember they were blowin' everyone away at that time. They could probably careless about getting filmed and probably didn't even want to. That's my take on that.
cheese... listen to Van Halen I ....no disrespect... but he played the same lick so many times... and thru the rest of the albums... I was there and listening... srs84

first album he was hitting notes he never hit since, he wasnt just playing chops and runs here like he later began getting stuck on, he bent the rules better than anybody
i saw them in indianapolis like a year or two ago and it was the best concert i ever been to, and ive seen some bad ass concerts (aerosmith/motely crue/kiss/ lynyrd skynyrd) you get my point
Van Halen owes a lot to their sound due to the backing vocals of M.A and big bass sound,he may not be the fastest or most fluent but he does have a knack for an open big sound and very good rhythm.
Eddie was a God, but everything he's done from 2007 onward is just a shit. Firing mike, sucking ass for the first half of the tour, not putting out a new album on over 13 years, calling his fans undeserving. Overpriced guitars, the list goes on. Eddie, I used to love you, you taught me how to play guitar, you taught me to love the music, not the look or the money and the bullshit, but now you've become nothing more than a salesman. Im sure you love your son,but let his own band open for you guys
