  • Liked the "Friend" analogy haha

  • Equal, but... you said rests were gold!

  • Howdy :D.. nice.

  • Now I know 3 languages, English, French and Music.

  • shit. I have hairloss.

  • You are soooooooooooo FUNNY!(and very helpful)^_^

  • I have a music theory test tomorrow and its on minor scales and relative majors and minors, and I'm just learning this stuff!! I'm DIEING!!

  • Feeling like we boarded the train late!

I am homeschooling two of my kids and our music teacher moved away a couple months ago, and we have been feeling SO lost!

Now we have focus and a lesson! Thanks for putting these together and teaching music theory!

You are very informative and so genuine!

    Thanks!!!

  • I used to take piano lessons (for years!) and I've been in several choirs, but I've always had a mental "block" with the theory behind it all and barely muddled through. Finally, frustrated, I did a search for online music theory lessons and found your videos. THANK YOU. As another commenter said, you are a gem. This is exactly what I need. Can't wait to watch the rest and practice!

  • Hi, you're awesome.

  • Your not lame your adorable!! Thank you for the music theory its a really help i have a music teacher but......he's can't really explain it good. But you do a perfect job i understand so much more with you O_O. Thank you again ^_^

  • Lesson Number Five, Oh Yeah xD lol

  • thank-you for this your a gem <3

  • Dude your not lame lol. I appreciate your humor. I wouldn't want the clear eye guy teaching me ha ha

  • HEY , scroll up , he is still teaching >.>

  • @williamwolfcub HAHHAHAHA!

  • @williamwolfcub you mean scroll down. I hate it when people get it wrong.

  • I've been playing music for 5 years and i still cant tell the difference between a half and a whole rest. haha

  • @jthameschoir08 me neither, but ive been playing for 10 years... (I feel really stupid) xD

  • 5:14 woke me up in class. Teachers should use that method more often.

  • It's funny how the viewership gets less as more people drop out.

  • how old are you??

  • @CoffeeSketch he is 23 :) read it on his profile

  • You're an amazing teacher. I'm kind of sad that I learned this stuff before I found your videos. I'm only on number 5 though, so I hope by number 50 I can learn something I don't know.

  • Andrew, you're an excellent teacher with generous heart and a great sense of humour. Thanks for this.

    fgw

  • Now i understand why they say "Silence is gold".

  • Andrew, I just wanted to comment on what you are doing here...I just bought a piano today and I am determined to learn music and how to play this piano. I am a 44yr old guy and this is brand new to me but I'm determined! I just happened on to you tube looking for help and there you were teaching for free...wow! Thank you. You're a good guy and a great teacher I'm getting this stuff! I'm only on lesson 5 but I'm excited to keep going. Thanks again!

  • @MLLJC5

Best of luck with the piano - hope it's going well for you :)

  • Comment removed

  • I hope you get something out of making all of these because I couldn't imagine finding the time to teach all of this. Thank you so much for the help! :)

  • 3 people have never heard music.

  • Question!! who invented all this signs?

  • your a preetty cool dude

  • after all of this time i only just realised you do your 'Q' backwards

  • dude you are not lame..... i thought the murder the rest part was funny... and thanks for great lesson you cant pay for good learning like this

  • lollll love this shit (i'm so lame) haha

  • Your a good teacher.

  • Thanks again Andrew, and I also like your style, humor and personality that you aren't afraid to show. Keep up the great work!

  • good job !!

  • I love how he teaches. I watch these videos to see how he thinks of theory verses how I think of it. I'm going to use some of his methods and memorization things when I'm teaching new musicians about theory.

  • @Remur432

    Yes.

I'm using them while I learn guitar; they provide means for learning useful music theory applicable to any common instrument.

  • You are simply amazing!!! Oh my gosh.. words can't even describe. These lessons are VERY very easy, so I blew through 1/4 in the first day. If I had more time I would have done them ALL at once, but it's very time-consuming! lol. I ever see you (which isn't likely cause I live in Calif.) I may just walk up to you and hug you!! :)

  • A "hole" rest. Lol, puns are awful when they're spoken. :p Thank you so much for these lessons and capturing your "awkward teacher"-ness. I find it muct easier learning music when I hear something really stupid. It loosens me up, helps me relax, etc. :)

  • 20..too much homework, 5 is ok.

  • Thank you tremendously for offering your knowledge on this global communication interface. I'm starting a band with a good friend of mine and along with some other friends, music theory came into the discussion. I've only played guitar seriously for about a year, but after feeling hopelessly lost in the conversation, my curiosity has lead me here. With time, I hope to be able to contribute something relevant and expand my musicianship further down the road. You are changing lives, good sir!

  • Great videos and thanks for making them accessible to the public for free ; ))

  • you are an amazing teacher! you could have earned something out of this but allow me to thank you sincerely. THANKS and keep it up!

  • U ARE AWESOME I HAVE LEARNED SO MUCH!!!!!!

  • excellent vids. thank u so much for taking the time to do this. ive looked at so many vids and they kept cutting corners but u took the time to make these vids properly and also entertaining

  • Lol, every time he says "zed" it cracks me up.

  • u scared me with 5:17 ..my mind was somewhere else

  • 5:14 "...and the birds are buzzing..."

    I love buzzing birds. Haha.

But I think I love these videos more.

    Thanks again.

  • AUGH! Where is lesson 8?

  • 5:15 wow he caught me off guard

  • Wow, I've been trying to become an Electronic music producer but I didn't know anything about music theory, these lessons are GREAT! I've never learned something so easy and it actually sticks, unlike everything I learned in school/college haha, Thanks man

  • He looks like Bernardo from Zorro Generation Z XD

  • Lypur, you are awesome, i am learning so much.. I really like your personality too, You seem very humble and down to earth :-)

  • Great Teaching! the way i remember the whole and half rests is that the whole rest is a suit case, and the half rest is a hat. Which one is heavier? suit case, so it'll worth more 'kilograms' (beats) and the hat is less heavier then the suit case so it'll worth less.

    Thankyou! and God bless.........seriously!

  • Very interesting...i think i'm getting the hang of this...

  • OHH MY GOD U SCARED ME AT 5:17

  • Hey Mr Andrew, thank you to the moon and back :) I've been doing my home work too, it's cool cos I can rewind, watch it over, thanks heaps! Great teacher and funny :)

  • "hopefully you've master the previous lesson!" yeah, about 6 years ago...

  • nice1 fella.. u r wicked and thanks for all the info u r providing us

  • very good

  • @holysword876 yo man

  • The way my teacher had us remember whole and half rests was a whole rest is heavy and it sinks. A half rest is light and it floats. The whole rest is below the staff line and the half rest floats on the staff line.

  • Dis nigga high!

  • you sir deserve a klondike bar

  • lol seriously buy this man a steak dinner, he's one of the best teachers on youtube.

  • You are a great person Lypur. Very warm hearted and enthusiastic. I respect your willing to teach people that cannot afford to have piano lessons. Thank you. God bless you.

  • I like how you present stories as a way of remembering things - I'll probably never forget jumping back a little bit in my chair, when you fell in that hole at 5:17 :D

Thank you for the great lessons!

  • Thanks for your teachings, they are most beneficial to me. Once again, thank you very much!

  • I've been watching all your videos. You make it so simple and your actually hilarious!

Seriously, your geeky but in a really awesomely funny way.

Keep doing what your doing, Im sure everyone really appreciates it :)

  • Its funny, that the first lesson has like 20,000 views, then you come here to the 5th and see the people who are actually commited!

I've been watching your videos, Andrew, for maybe...2 weeks, and although I've been a commited musician for 4-5 years, I'm still learning a bunch (it muy not be new, but you present it in a way that I can better understand it now).

    So Thank You!!

  • love this free online lesson!

don't have to pay $20-$40 an hour one! ^^

  • haha.. its so funny cuz your Jokes can be so silly when you're watching the videos but ill be damnedd if when im looking at a music sheet im not thinking or relating the notes to those jokes lol..

its weird...so in hindsight your jokes arent really lame cuz they make us remember or learn the things...a very unique teaching style indeed...keep up the good work my fellow corny joke teller lol..it WORKS!!.. BRAVO~!

  • Andrew! You're a Genius! Thank you for sharing your knowledge with the REST of us! With all These new things to learn, I hope I still have time to REST! Tell all the haters on this website to give it a REST! eh? ehh? Tough crowd....

  • He is a wonderful instructer. "Thanks Alot"

  • You have a talent for getting the message across. I am finding your course a great help. What I like is that you have broken it down into digestable chunks.

  • Andrew!

Thank you for your videos! I could not have learned so much without your lessons.

I am ( lets say ) not young anymore and do not have time to go to classes due to work and other responsibilities.

Your lessons make it possible for me to watch them even as late as 11 p.m.

I tried learning thru books and did not find it half interesting.

You along with a few others on you tube have made me very happy !

A shout out for all your do !!

  • which others. im curious about other sources of musical education on youtube.

  • andrew, thank you for your great mnemonic (i hope it's called like this in english. in german it's called "Eselsbrücke"). now i really can remember which sign i have to use for a whole and which for a half rest. i laughed so loud at the part where you have fallen in there! :D

really, i'm / we are very thankful that you do all this lessons and work for us! you are a very good and sympathic teacher!

  • I love your sense of humour... The fact that it's so lame makes your videos all the more attractive; You're making the video seem more personal to me, and everyone else, so we'd all learn easier and more productively... Don't listen to the cynics with no idea about good showmanship :D

Keep posting, i'm lovin' it :D xD

  • I love your personality. If I said something crude about you (which I think I did :{ ) I sincerely apologize

  • I was a hateful fool then :(

  • thank you once again Andrew

    5 *

  • well, I dont really think they are equal, because you can compose a piece just containin notes but not one just containin rests. anyhow rests are very important of course.

  • thank U man!! you are Awesome!!

  • Whole and half rest can also be determined another way- I look why is in the entire measure and determine wheter it is half or whole

  • Terrific! Lypur, how many more theory lessons do you foresee? Thanks!

  • quite a few! Probably at least 40 or more

  • @Lypur when i finish music theory which sheet music should i read to play songs on an ocarina
