The ripple didn't die out, its just not used by our heros. Stands are the natural evolution of the Ripple.

His stand isn't to useless. Tenticles are rather usefull, and he can find lost things with it. And probably get nudy pics from the camera smashing ability, what with him being a pervert.

Also, he DOES use the ripple with Hermit Purple. He stabs the tenticles into things and charges it through them. Only reason why he doesn't use it much is because punching things to death with your soul is much more effective.
