@Mankind801 and @commradefyedka It is actually an intentional look directly at the camera, it's Hitchcock's acknowledgement of the audience's voyeurism in cinema, paralleling Jeffries' own voyeuristic activities.

The look is kind of foreshadowing of Thorwald's later on, when Thorwald spots Jeffries, and looks directly at him, and by extension, us, the audience.
