I don't know when you posted this video. I am, however, inspired by it. I am approaching 50 yo and enjoy a strong and healthy body. I, naturally, used to be stronger and am working to increase and of course maintain that strength as I move into my dotage LOL. I've been wondering where I could do these exercises (ouch to the doorframe),going to the park is a perfect idea! I'll see where I'm at then set a goal to do 1 more in 2 weeks. (today: 11/07/08) Thanks!
There is a saying that "muscles never forget" Once you have built them, even if you stop practicing, the next time you will progress faster. This is because the muscle may atrophy but the circulation system is still largely there to supply blood to the regrowing muscles. But you MUST rest the muscle for 24 hrs between workouts. Thats when IT GROWS! Its been about a month and a half since you started. How are you doing now? Bet you are starting to see some nice regrowth.
Ah yes, well a little while ago my tree branch that I was doing pull ups on got cut down! So I've been doing them on the door again, and my hands are not very happy about that! I went through some weird period where I couldn't do even one - I just couldn't do it. I was at 4 last week (on the doorframe) and then I just got my wisdom teeth out :P But I will continue on, provided I can get through this without my hands aching any more.
Congrats on getting back into pullups/working out.
I bought a pullup bar about 2/3 months ago and have been working out on it pretty normally since. I started at 1 pullup and 2 chinups which shocked me, because it has been YEARS since I have done any, and I was happy I could even do one.
The other day I maxed out at 10 straight chinups and 6 pullups... My old record I think was 19 pullups... so I have a ways to go. It feels good to be getting stronger.
Hi Bonnie, I saw your old chinup vid on the doorframe, what a great effort! It is great that you are trying to get back to where you were - and very courageous of you to do it for all to see. My hat's off to you and I can't wait to see your progress! How about a times flexed arm hang, do you ever test yourself with that?
Hehe, well right now, I don't have anything interesting to film. My workout yesterday consisted of 6 negatives of each, and some straight arm and bent arm (single arm and both) hangs. It has been 2 weeks today since my *big* workout where I was able to do three of each and I cannot do even one :( Very discouraging in a way, but I'm just going to keep at it, gotta get better at some point! Haven't tested as far as time goes. Maybe I'll do that.
I was thinking about that, the problem is that my camera has to be plugged in to my laptop while I record footage (video head problem). I might lug my stuff up there next time though. Thanks for the comment :)
Pull Ups are tough, not many people can even do 1. I do them every week, I can do 15-20 straight. But like you said, when I started, I could only do 1 or 2. Once you stop, its hard to get back in the groove. I do mine extra wide grip. Good for you Bonnie!!
Augh..extra wide grip makes my heart rate go up. The shoulder width are hard enough right now, lol. But man, 15-20 is really good. Do you do dead hang or kipping?
btw...I just saw your one comment, I would love to make a vid if your ever in the Philly area. Or if Im ever in...where are you from again:) I thought you were from PA...I saw it on your family's website but I forgot.
Yeah, dead hang is great. The real ones ;) Squats I can't do at proper weights because I don't have a squat rack and I can't lift the bar up over my head!
We're from Massachusetts but we have friends around Philly. I am still super sore today, but a tad less than yesterday. I'll be surprised if the soreness/weakness is gone in a week!
Be careful, you could really hurt yourself. Don't forget to do warm-ups & stretches first. Otherwise you could injure a muscle or tendon. I can't do a single pull-up. I need to lift small dumb bells first, and work my way up.
Ah yes! Good point! I stretch my legs properly before a run because I've been injured before but I don't always remember to stretch my upper body. I need to remember so I don't get reminded with an injury!
you can notice from her shoulders she does workout

Unfortunately I'm suffering from park bench paralysis in my left hand (nervus radialis).
This will take a week or so to cure. So at the moment I neither can play guitar nor can I do pull ups :)
But I could offer you some help in learning German. Feel free to ask 8-)

My "DoorGym" arrived yesterday to my delight.
Lo and behold, I witnessed somewhat with horror that I couldn't do ONE rep!
I'm going to have to take this slowly and lesson the self- reproach.
I used to be able to do 15-20 (!) pulls and way more chins. That was many, many moons ago, alas.
Reality = humility.
Great post, btw. I'm really sore from just trying to get up the bar from full extention.
Cheers.

All right! I'm shooting for a workout this afternoon, maybe I'll get some footage. I don't think I'll be able to top 8, though :D
