  • Yes, I agree...

  • yes, i am with you.. since i teach ASL, i show the students more than one sign like, "soon", "early", etc... same idea with accents but in sign. also, i always respect others' languages. i always keep myself flexible. i don't see anything wrong. i guess that's me..

again, i am with you, ella! ;-)

  • @deafraindog7 As a fellow ASL teacher, I share similar situations. However, I always aim for integrity and respect for the local regional variation as well as preparing students to use the "standardized" vocabulary accepted in US. I aim to avoid effects of linguistic colonialism ie initialized signs, Englishized terms over existing ASL terms while being fully aware of natural healthy and needed changes

  • The reason why Deaf Germans used one finger on head for Germany is because during World War One German soliders used helmet (can't think of the right word tonight) has symbol (pointy) on the helmt and that is how they made up that sign for their country. Hope I explained well. David has Harvard English and I am sure he can explain it better than me. :-)

  • @MeDeafYes Thanks for sharing your views based on your experiences interacting and discussing those issues directly with Deaf people from those countries.

  • When I visited some countries for two years...Deaf people signed for America when I signed to them where I came from...they showed me their respect for my country---by using sign I used for America. I did the same with them too. The sign for Germany that Nikki adores very much should not be used today...This is how I look at it.

  • I do not agree with ASLNikki's reasons. I cycled with Deaf German guy for few weeks in Australia and he did not like the way how I signed for Germany (Nazis' symbol) because many germans were ashamed for what their people did to Jewish people. Since then I always signed Germany with one finger on head...and met some Deaf Germans in Germany and they gave me the same reason as this Deaf German guy did.

  • Ella, I have to agree with you. I would rather to learn the proper sign for the countries from the foreigners so that way I can be respectful of their countries/culture.
