he didn't seem calm. He seemed anti-social and scared. Couldn't even be on the same path as those moose, And boy oh boy that look back was far from calm.
He was scared and rude. Rather than embracing a new experience (e.g. letting them sniff him) he shied away and hid on the road (where they weren't going).
@lilithn If they wanted to attack him they would have done so regardless of the barricade. They lowered their heads, so they probably weren't terribly friendly, but at the same time they also raised them after getting a sniff. He just as easily could have stayed on the path and been fine.
And please don't use foul or insulting language unless you really have to: it only hurts friendly conversation.
I don't think its very friendly and kind if you call someone anti-social and a coward because he did not know how the animals will react, if they get scared and trample him, I'm very glad you are such an expert on reading animal minds, that you exactly know what they would do in the next minute.
It's amazing to see how curious they are. I'd have jumped the fence too, they aren't predators so there's no reason, if you stay calm and quiet, they'd attack you ^^
wow reminds of one day rode my atv up a path on a hill and suddenly a female moose and two calf were walking up the hill only meters away from me, it was just as suprised as i was, epic stuff!
haahaha, I would have lifted my bike over too, but really, I would have turned around & high tailed it on outta there, you never know how close Mother is.
i love how the mooses are just casually walking by and their all like "hello just going for a stroll nice to see you this evening" and the guys like "HOLY $HIT! im moving on the other side dont move he wont see you if you dont move!"
I came pretty close to a deer walking down the road a few months ago, in Marin County. (never a moose, tho, wow). I was getting pretty close to the deer, but then a car came and scared him off.
I've had them come right up to the window of a cabin, and just stand and hang out with me, and also gotten pretty close just walking around the yard..That's always pretty cool. A moose, though, I'm sure I wouldn't quite know how to respond, hee...
Aw they're just calfs barely his size. Would've been awesome to experience this! I only ever met one moose, and it was a big one! Luckily we were both equally startled and turned our seperate ways.
@Andreazor cute! awwww that is so cute :) I didn't realize they were just babies :) I could not imagine encountering a grown up,but as long as we were distant I think that would be pretty cool :)
@willem01 - theese were pretty small tbh. a Moose ran past me once, after jumping of a truck... It was fucking massive! it was 2.20 in height or something. they are huuge! also they can easily kill you if you act aggresively
Their behavior can be a little unpredictable. And since these two look to be calfs that have been left by their mother (as they are too old to keep caring for) they might be a bit too close with you. It's amazing how cool they are about the traffic and everything, all moose I've ever met are startled by traffic. And if there is a calf, there might be a mommy, and you do NOT want to get close to mother moose little calf when she's around, you might not stand up again.
They are twoyoiung ones, who are very curious. The danger is that mama could be nearby ready to stomp the the biker to death. Wow, that was very scary! (I'm in Alaska, I know!)
He's smart. Those moose could have killed him. No eye contact, look disinterested. Well played Norgie!

A mother moose and her baby is something to run away from. The mother moose -will- trample you if you're as close as this guy was.
What I'd really like to meet is a wolf or a lynx, that would be absolutely awesome.
