@09feb1992 They are not that bad. It is much easier to get a taxi in Joburg than in 95% of US. There are these bus taxis and taxis that you call. These bus taxis run routes and are more like mini buses.

well I had the chance to fit in a township quite easily! that was back in 2003-2004. I lived a full year there and after 4 month I was traveling all by myself township to city back and forth with those combies and I never had any trouble.I travelled around soweto on my own Even in Jozi! But still you have to be cautious and steady!

Yes, 99% of the commuters are black but I am white and I always used to take these taxis to and from university. They saved me time and money and I never had a problem being picked up. I remember everyone loved it when, after paying, I would offer to jump out the back window instead of making my way to the front, thereby saving the driver time.
Amazing... here in Mexico we use written signs in the front of the car with the destination of the taxi and have a steady route, this way people can take the one they prefer, why not do it that way ? thank you, nice vid by the way...
This is kind of ridiculous. Catching a kombi is extremely easy. The signs help but they also just yell at you if your standing on the road. Also, you don't get in the front if you've never been in one. That's where the money collector sits. You sit in the back and pass your money forward. It's very cheap to rent a vehicle for a week or two. It will be ready and waiting at the airport if you book it on-line. If you don't they jsut give u crap. Petrol is cheap in SA too. But don't rent a toyota or honda balade because they hijack them. The reaon is the chassis fit the taxi's. So they just re-use the shell of the taxi. Their friends in right places will register the new chassis and engine number in their names. Phew! but it's true.

That's why you made it back, you were smart enough to know how dangerous SA can be when you are on your own. That applies more so to the areas you should never be around which is hard for a tourist to know. I hope you enjoyed your stay the rest of the time though, miss my country :)

well I had the chance to fit in a township quite easily! that was back in 2003-2004. I lived a full year there and after 4 month I was traveling all by myself township to city back and forth with those combies and I never had any trouble.I travelled around soweto on my own Even in Jozi! But still you have to be cautious and steady!

oh this is ''my'' land too. has it occured to any black s. african that there would be nothing but dirt and trees in there had the whites not blazed a trail through the wilderness a few hundred years ago and set up a civilization. there were relatively few blacks in s.a. back then. they migrated into the area when whites began to set up industry and mining, offering them jobs. at no point did they use them as slaves. they were paid. instead of having to hunt for food, they worked for it.

Yes, 99% of the commuters are black but I am white and I always used to take these taxis to and from university. They saved me time and money and I never had a problem being picked up. I remember everyone loved it when, after paying, I would offer to jump out the back window instead of making my way to the front, thereby saving the driver time.

This is kind of ridiculous. Catching a kombi is extremely easy. The signs help but they also just yell at you if your standing on the road. Also, you don't get in the front if you've never been in one. That's where the money collector sits. You sit in the back and pass your money forward. I don't know why this guy is trying to catch a kombi in a neighborhood like that though. A more main street would be smarter. Where is he, Soweto?

Why would you have someone create a guide video who can't provide an informative piece? Shoo! He didn't even visit a taxi rank and explain how to navigate them and safety issues, give the basic downward finger that can be used to indicate a short ride or explain why the bus system is poor and seems to serve wealthier/whiter areas like Melville & Sandton with some regularity. He couldn't even find out the sign for Orange Farm (shown at 1:28-easy explanation:it looks like you're holding an orange)

It's very cheap to rent a vehicle for a week or two. It will be ready and waiting at the airport if you book it on-line. If you don't they jsut give u crap. Petrol is cheap in SA too. But don't rent a toyota or honda balade because they hijack them. The reaon is the chassis fit the taxi's. So they just re-use the shell of the taxi. Their friends in right places will register the new chassis and engine number in their names. Phew! but it's true.
