Moose and elk can refer to the same animal. So both words may be used here.

Well, I am not an expert on animals or language for that matter, but as far as I know moose and elk refer to two different animals if you use American-English. The moose being the larger animal. But that larger animal can be called elk if you use British-English. It is rather complicated as I am not sure whether the American moose or the European elk are 100 % the same animal.
