@Sal1the1great All true, Jake has excellent stand-up technique, lands grisp jabs and great body and leg kicks. Lawler said about his kicks post fight "no single kick felt like it was going to put me down, but if he kept landing them they would have added up"
No one punch KO power, but he uses his technical striking to set up TD's, occasional standing choke, & he does enuff damage 2 keep guys honest. He's a wizard on the ground, and has a little magic taking the fight there.
BRING JAKE SHIELDS TO THE UFC... he'd be a match for any single competitor in the UFC he beat condit and many other guys and has won his last 11 matches... he could be the next big thing and he's still young
12 matches now, but you left this comment a month ago. it's not a question if he could beat guys in the ufc, it's a matter of where the better opportunity is right now. ufc has lost a lot of fighters lately. not like I'll stop watching, lol. but I hope strikeforce catches on better than elitexc. shields is rad tho...
yea i saw him beating lawlor but still the better opportuity ahs gotta be with the ufc he could make an easy title opportunity run and i think could defeat gsp if given the chance... he's a star just waiting to break out i can feel it
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
sheilds striking isnt that great so he wouldnt do well vs a koscheck who likes throwin bombs and has good enough wrestling to avoid the ground, he wouldnt beat fitch for the same reason, fitchs superior striking (plus hiss bjj can hang), HE DEF wouldnt beat thiagos muythai not in a million years......and gsp .... no need to even mention
i feel like swick would knock him out also ..superior standup ..maybe tho , shields would be down there with condit kampman and swick
shiedls striking isnt that great?? rly his muay thai is exceptional and koscheck is nothing special in my opinion he really isnt that good and fitch has decent standup but nothing else impresses me... and as far as tiago he is just about all ground and pound with boxing.... he's a submission away from being found out... and gsp greased his last fight i just think his reign is a big fight away from being over... plus jake shields bjj is top notch i mena he beat vinny for god sake
there are many guys outside of the ufc who would be successful in the organization. jake would be one of them. however, he wouldnt challenge for a title anytime soon. his standup is garbage. youll see what i mean when he fights hendo, a fighter with far superior striking and comprable grappling.
i hate to say this cuz i dont like Vinnie cuz of his attitude and arrogance but that was back in 2005 and i believe that his game now is way more improved ..
Shields was purple belt,Vinnie was BJJ black belt world heavyweight Champ. Final fight of the California Professional Absolute Championship. Jake is now a Gracie black belt.
Shields cuts quite a bit of weight for mma. I doubt he cuts any weight for grappling competitions. Shields is probably 190lbs here. What is impressive is that he was a purple belt here and whooped vinny as bad as he did.
lol you can hear nate diaz in the background

He has been fighting top middleweights, Ruthless Robbie, Mayhem and now Hendo.
I read that he wants to fight at his natural weight but that Strikeforce has all these top 5 and 10 middleweights and they are just in a building

@JonnyRingo84 COMPARABLE GRAPPLING?
I know hindsight is 20/20 but even back then I would have told you this was nuts.
... Unless the comparison in their grappling that you want to make is that Shield's grappling is 100X better.
I had still picked hendo to win-do, though. Didn't know shields was that resilient and thought hendo's TDD was a bit better.

Shields just runs over Vinnie and leaves him lying in the road.
mixmaster2669 3 years ago 35
GSP would still kick Jake Sheilds arse IMO.

that would be a good fight

Thanks man i didnt know that! wow he really gave him a trouble then by being only a purple!
xaxaxe 3 years ago 4
that's the thing though. i dont think vinnie was well versed in a no-gi game at that time.
no-gi game is way way different from the gi game. and jake just schooled vinnie.
its harder to play the guard game in a no-gi match against top level grapplers. (hard because you're use to he gi)
harder but not impossible of course.

Shields dominates a 3 time Heavyweight BJJ and Absolute Champion. Jake 170lbs, Vinnie 210lbs. Impressive.
oakmantex 3 years ago 57
yeh because he already was a 3-time champ and weighted 210lbs at the time...
mental midget logic.

yes he was a 3-time champ but it was with a gi right?
that just shows you how much different the no-gi game is.
