  • judging by how old you looked at the time of this recording (early thirties, i'm guessing), you truly did this justice. db was my main drumming inspiration in the 70's, along with thousands of other budding drummers, for sure. thx for dissecting this and then bringing it to an accurate visual presentation. i know it must have taken a lot of time and effort. very sweet!

  • @ultrakool Well this was done about 2 years ago and I was about 46 or so - but thanks for the early thirties comment! It's just a lot of years playing this music that makes it so much fun. Thank so much

  • @TheDrumChannel hmmm..you're pushing 50y/o!?!. ok.. keep doing those leg raises, crunches and all the rest...you wanna be doing this for at least another thirty

  • You my young friend are "balls on accurate" with this cover solo. I don't even think that it is fair to "you" to call it a cover. You nailed it. And how do I know this you ask? Because I was there at Shea Stadium and the concerts that followed until I went into the USAF. I still listen to GFR on my original vinyl and saw Mark Farner in Destin, FL in 2008. You did us old GFR fans proud. Keep on hitting them skins!

  • @MrBigben1952 I'm glad you got so much enjoyment out of this - Imagine how I feel playing it. It is just the best. Thanks so much for the kind words. Donny Brewer knows how to hit them skins!

  • I agree with jeffreygaudreault - you are flawless and fun to watch!

  • @mmisme Well thank you and I'm glad you enjoyed it

  • Nice job dude---enjoyed it!

  • @17drumhead Thank you

  • That's a great reply... I've progressed (If that's the right word) from Pop to Rock to Jazz Fusion & Straight Ahead Jazz... I love Grand Funk and Brewer & Zeppelin with Bonham... but I also love Mclaughlin and Cobham, RTF with Lenny White, Scofield with Dennis Chambers... I saw Dave Weckl at the IMAC theater in Huntington LI a few years ago. I recorded it on a Sony MiniDisc Recorder... He was great. I mean he was really, really great. I was floored by his technique! Thanks for the reply...

  • I'm really curious... How would you rate Don Brewer as a drummer... I mean technically

  • @sinsagoodmansbrother That's a good question. When you compare him to someone like John Bonham, he is way more technical. Bonham has that sound and that feel but is not that hard to play once you get that feel down. Compared to someone like Dave Weckl, Don isn't as technical (and either am I) The drums to Grand funk songs are well thought out and have a lot of energy in them. I've been playing them since they first came out in the early 70's and will probably do so until I can't any more. Thanks

  • Needs to work on his time.

  • @Easleytee Who Don? :)

  • the guy z a freak...unbeleivable. Its in my Favourites

  • @mikeyj780 Thanks so much - Great comment

  • @The DrumChannel Well, you oughtta be, because you're flawless and fun to watch! By the way Don Brewer and I both share the same birthday: September 3rd. Which is totally cool since he's one of my favorite drummers of all time. My favorite Funk album is E Pluribus Funk. And I love your cover on "I Come Tumblin'" It's flawless and fun to watch, because your smiling and having fun. Which music should utimately be: FUN!

  • @jeffreygaudreault Thanks so much - I'm glad you like these covers - either you like this music or you don't. Grand Funk kinda had that way about them. That's cool that you have the same birthday - I missed it by 7 days as well also being a Virgo. Funny about the band thing, but I'm going to check out some peole that need a drummer on Friday - Hopefully they are good musicians as it takes a lot of time to dedicate. Thanks so much again

  • @The Drum Channel Are you in a band now?

  • @jeffreygaudreault Not at the moment

  • Sweet music to my ears!!!

I bow to your performance and grovel at your feet in sheer appreciation of your talent and dedication...

  • @freedomspatriot1 You are too kind. Thanks and I'm glad you enjoyed that

  • You're Hired!

  • @probass82 OK when do I start!

  • great job Iam a bassplayer and grew up listening to this great band.again job well done.peace

  • , I just came to see this drum solo, because I'm watching an episode of the Simpsons and Homer said the name of the drummer :D ; enjoyed the drum :D

  • @rucaa12 Yes I did see that episode. It's nice they get some attention after all these years

  • bravo monsieur! super! bel hommage a DON BREWER !DIDIER D'AGOSTINO shamanRHYTHMAN BATTEUR ET PROFESSEUR DE BATTERIE francais.videos sur youtub, dailymotion.

  • That was great u "cunt"!

  • @jesseroman3 Ha Ha - Love it!

  • So, this is what passes for talent in the modern era.

    Pitiful.

  • @Easleytee No - This is what passes for talent in 1971. There is no talent in the modern era - only marketing and sales.

  • Wow, excelente.

  • @pepitogamez Thank You

  • Yeah! Very, very nice. I'm mean....damn good. damn good.

  • @jimflys2 Thanks so much

  • @bassiclogic Well - I've been playing this one for a while now. Thanks

  • There is one thing that was left out of the solo, When the drumming was going on..on the last floor tom, there was two or three times when he drummed on the drum edge. That was the ONLY thing left out. Otherwise, it was STIIL KICK ASS!!!

  • @yucchhiiowwee I think I know what you are talking about but I think it's in another live album. I may be wrong - I 'll have to give it a listen. Thanks

  • @TheDrumChannel This particular version does not have that playing the floor tom rim, BUT if you look up the video of this song with the solo you'll find it. Let me what you think. Thanks for the reply.

  • Excelente!!!!...gran baterista...

  • @zarialf55 Thanks

  • GFR was my very first concert ever during Shinin' on tour and Wet Willie band opened. I saw them in Providence, R.I. I still remember Don Brewer doing this. Many people thought he was banging his head on the snair when he'd bend over so fast while banging the bass drum. Lol. This guy has T.N.U.C down!!! Most you probably already know about T.N.U.C spelled backwards. Some serious energy!!!

  • @yucchhiiowwee Thanks so much. Yeah - he was original - guess you gotta give him that. Thanks

  • I checked out a lot of videos on TheDrumChannel, all are totally Cool !

The T.N.U.C. solo was the first one I learned back in 1970, you nailed it bro.

The only problem I had with it was twisting my back to reach that 2nd floor tom :)

When Brewer plays that solo today, it sounds like Atomic Bombs going off !!! Solo #2 for me was Tommy Aldridge's "UP". I Couldn't quit get into the Moby Dick solo from that period for some reason...? You're Great man !

  • @boonehawks I know - he still plays it with a lot of feeling. I wish they all would just get back together and jam. It's one thing if a member dies, but at this stage, with everyone still alive - they should just jam. Thanks

  • Excellent performance, thanks brother

  • @Apachito59 Your Welcome

  • Bravo Zulu

  • I HATE YOU----Seriously, this is great!!!!

  • @scatt57 Ha - Thanks

  • I'd say he's got it down pat...Exactly ! Perfectly tuned too. I used to listen to this solo at least twice a week way back.

  • @slinkydinky999 Then you must know it by heart and appreciate it slightly more. Thanks

  • your drums sound like the percussion of god and the cover is so exact and great sounding i almost fainted... awesome job covering a personal favorite solo of mine .. too bad i cant cover it haha

  • @TheSmokieMcPothead Your screen name is as original as this solo. Glad you enjoyed it. Check out my Drum Duet I did with myself!. Thanks

  • love the sound of your drums. very classic sound.

  • @timpanista Thanks - It comes out different for each song. Thanks

  • even better than old Don....that's, he created the drums patterns but really you worked about them in a fantastic way....great feeling and precision as well...i'm very proud-as italian-of your roots!! long live GFR

  • @dareangel69 Thanks so much for that comment. These were Don's trademark riffs. I grew up playing this when it came out, so this is my comfort zone! Thanks again

  • just 'RAWR' man xD Amazing solo, the notes were right on.

My father presented me to GFR when I was like 12(or so) and I listened to the whole discography more than 3 times, and this was one of those songs I got really hooked on to, the drum solo is incredible!

It's great to have youtube now to find great drum covers such as yours xD

  • @Dan1loBr Glad you can enjoy this. Thanks

  • BRAVO!!! EXCELLENT COVER! Would make Don Brewer proud.

That really was perfect since I know every beat by heart in this solo!

  • @ZubudMan Thanks - coming from someone who really knows this music - that's a great comment. Gotta love the GFR!

  • damn, that was amazing. don brewer has such a distinct style, all those "loco motive" flourishes, great vocalist too. kick ass man!

  • @tomitstube Thanks - He was/is still a kick ass drummer imo

  • Ótimo!!!!!

  • The drums are tuned perfectly. Nothing like hearing nicely tuned drums all mic'ed up.

Weckl does a clip on one of his videos where he's doing triplets but alternating lead hands back and forth. He goes around the kit doing it so effortlessly and quickly you almost can't believe it can be done, but there you are watching it.

This was a very sweet sounding solo.

The snare sounds like it could break into Moby Dick any second, lol.

    Thank brother. Appreciate it much.

  • @OneSteveUnderGod Thanks so much for the nice comment and taking the time to write it. Dave Weckl is just an amazing drummer. I know only one song from him "Tower of inspiration" I'm going to post it soon. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thanks again

  • This is my # 1 solo drum of the 70's of Don Brewer :) GRAND FUNK RAILROAD-LIVE T.N.U.C

Have you heard this? Who knows Grand Funk Railroad?

  • THAT IS THE MOST AWESOME THING IV'E EVER SEEN. THANK YOU FOR A MOMENT OF BLISS IN A OTHERWISE VERY DULL AND UNEVENTFULL LIFE. I ALWAYS WANTED TO BE A DRUMMER BUT LIFE HAPPENS. ON A SCALE FROM 1 TO 10 I GIVE YOU 10....... THANKS FOR EVERYTHING!!!!

  • @quicksho57 Thanks so much - Sorry for the delay in responding - It it the summer time - Lazy days of summer are upon us. Glad you enjoyed it.

  • Hi DrumChannel, i like it very much how do you play drums on GFR-Songs.

I'm GFR-Fan nearly 40 Years, however I play Guitar and cover Songs

    from GFR, too.

Don Brewer is my favourit-Drummer.....what a Drummer!!!

Good Luck for you, I see you!

  • @Highonahorse - Don Drewer is one of the best in my opinion - there are so many good drummers out there but for me, he is the most fun to play

  • Very nice! As a drummer, I know this is much harder to pull off that it appears. You captured the triplets that Brewer played perfectly!

    Dale

  • @dzjc01 Thanks Dale - to get this one perfect takes a lot of years of practice. It also helps when there are 50,000 screaming fans out there. Actually I think the solo from On Time was his best one. Those first 30 seconds are just amazing. I still can't keep up with that pace. I asked him once if that was done with a single bass drum. He said yes. I said wow. Nice guy too.

  • I also posted your video and the Don Brewer TNUC video on my personal FaceBook to hopefully open the eyes of a few people on what real drum talent is all about, thanks again for keeping the past alive, Mr. Drum Channel Man . . . Yeppers!

  • Thanks so much - that was really nice of you to do that. That means a lot to me. This was and still is a kick ass solo and one of my favorites

  • I 1st heard this when the GFR Live album came out, you play this very well, excellent skills. So many people born in the 80's and beyond will never touch you much much the masters of 60's and 70's. Thank You for keeping the memory alive. Don Brewer will live on and with people like you it sure makes it even more solid, again excellent drumming, If your ever in New Braunfels Texas, free photo shoot brother.

  • Thanks for the offer. I know we sound like old timers but the music back then was real - from the gut music, soul and talent was what made it work. Thanks again

  • Don Brewer would be proud; you didn't break as many sticks. but u r excellant!!ssdewayne

  • a really good example of Don's "lyrical" drumming is on "Mark Says Alright!"

  • Yes - a great song indeed. I gotta try that one!

  • i see from your playing that Don's drums weren't as as lyrical here as they are on "Out To Get You"... they're the entire backbone of "T.N.U.C."; fierce, hard-driving, carefully rendered, unrelenting, tantalizing... i see you also approximate his... whatever you want to call that, at 05:56, when he looked like he would give out, but just kept on giving more.

one of the best drum solos in Arena Rock history!

    June 6th, 1974, L.A. Forum, baby!!!

  • Agreed - He had so much energy when playing. I guess the 30,000 + peole helps too! Thanks again ffor the nice words.

  • Excellent Playing, like too know how much that set cost? Ive seen plently of drummers try to practice this solo, but never like this. Right on the money, Enjoyed very much seeing you play , Thanxs

  • Thanks so much - The set cost around $2200 but that was back in 1981 - I can't imagine what they would cost today. Everything is so expensive. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

  • Thanxs for the reply so quickly, $2200 for that set really isent bad, my thoughts is.."if a person can play extremely good then the price isent the concern here" quality/sound/construction is!!! Iam thinking of getting back into playing and looking around, seeing all these's vids , my blood is running...lol Looking at DDrums,Tama,Yamaha,HB Dums... but very confused on top-quality, sound... Ive put a set together and Iam up too $3,289 allmost complete.. Can you give advice please..

  • is this kit still available? and who makes it??

  • @ajtoy454

It is made by Tama - Imperialstar was the model and it was bought around 1981 - I'm not sure if it is still made.

  • Yes they do, thanxs for the reply so quickly..

  • This is Great man ! Not many drummers know this solo note for note, but this guys got it.

This was my first learned drum solo back in

1970 and I can still play it today!

Imagine if Brewer was a double bass player ?!

My second solo was Tommy Aldridge's "UP"

solo and #3 was Moby Dick (different, but kinda laid back when performed out live).

  • Yo man, what a great job, help me lot to play it...

Don was for me a very big influence...

    Thank you so much,

    R G France

  • WOW!!! I to know that solo buy heart and never thought I would see someone play it lick for lick at full speed ,it's like going to the gym for a three hour workout.Great job. One of the best drumming videos on youtube.

  • This dude should be hired quickly by someone. He is excellent!!!!!!ssdewayne

  • Great job! I learned to play drums copying Brewer when I was in h.s. I used his solo whenever I played with my band. I never could pull off those triplets betw. toms and bd at that speed, though. I became disabled at 25 before I had a chance to master it. Thanks for the memories. You should set your kit up like his and do it that way for kicks. Again, very well done by someone who knows the solo by heart.

  • Thanks Jeff for the kind words. I'm really glad you enjoyed this. I made it for people just like you who really appreciate and know the song. To most others, it's just another drum solo. To me it is a tribute to one of the greatest drummers of the seventies. Growing up, I guess that's all I did was listen to Don Brewer. If I had to do it again, I wouldn't change a thing. Happy New Year and best wishes for you and yours.

  • Thanks. Since I didn't have the bd/tom trips down in h.s., I played the pattern at 5:26 as simple triplets off the floor tom to my sn and 2 mounted toms (standard 5 piece kit). Anyway, with a r.h. lead, it caused me to have to cross my right stick over the left to get from the floor tom to the sn, then l.h. on the sm. tom and r.h. on the med. tom. and back again. So, although it wasn't technically what Don did, the cross sticking made for a good show as I sped up (he says humbly) lol.

  • It is really a fun solo to play if you have the chops. Much better than In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida that every drummer and his brother could play. Good chatting with ya. Keep drumming and have a good year! Oh. Have you ever heard or seen Dave Weckl or Steve Smith?

  • NICEEEEEEEEEEEEEE MAN!!!

  • Excellant. I'm 54 and seen Grand funk live 5 times :this dude is great.ssdewayne

  • Thanks so much - I'm glad you enjoyed it. I love playing GFR. He punches such a great beat to all his songs. Hopefully through these videos, people will see that Don Brewer was one of the better drummers of the 70's.

  • MAN! Dude, I mean DUDE! Lick for lick! What a cover!!!AWESOME!!! I cut my teeth on this album and you nailed it!!

  • Thanks so much for the words. Don Brewer rules! More to come - thank you again

  • dude im a great fan of Grand Funk Railroad. I used to listen to don brewer's drumming all the time. and you are such a cool drummer. i am a drummer as well but dude i like your style and cover. love the sound of your kit btw. great job dude. love the effects also. again, great job.

  • Thanks so much for the subscription and the favorite. I'm glad you are enjoying these videos. There are a lot of GFR vids on my site to check out. Don Brewer is one of the better drummers of that time period. I hope to let more people know how good and innovative he is was and still is. Thanks again

  • I saw Grand Funk in the 70's, I think the opening band was Eric Burden and the Animals.

Anyway, awesome solo, best I've heard since I saw Don do it.

  • what did you use to get your "on stage" effect? great solo, btw. the big guy would be proud

  • Just a picture of a stage and some masking, photoshop and layering.

  • you da man

  • heck yea man i was going to send u a comment and suggest thing song haha..i figure if u can do i come tumblin u could do this...i'm headed to your website to watch the uncut version!!! you rock dude!

  • Yes the website version sound a bit better and is a little bit longer. Glad you enjoyed it.

  • Haven't heard this in years !!!

    You nailed it bud !!!

Ya look like you were having fun.... and feelin the pain ! Ole Don was creative back in the day.

    Great job.!

    Pete

  • I agree Pete - Don Brewer was "Mister Asskicker" back in the day and still is today. Most of the other guys from that time are dead! A shame but true. Thanks again for the comment - and yes I was having fun.

  • Dude your awesome!

Just my opinion but there will only truely be one real GFR and that is Mark,Don & Mel...it to bad that the other third of the band wasnt present today because then they would truely be GRAND FUNK.

Without Mark it loses a special element as a whole. You are right GF was sooo underated as a band, but we all know that they came in a time when we were looking for something honest and real,we were all in need and they took us there!

GOD bless you bro for not letting us forget!

  • I've seen both the 1/3 and the 2/3. They just dont get that the three of them were more parts than the whole. It's a joke to see any of them together without each other. It just don't cut it. I was lucky enough to see them multiple times around 95 when they first got back together. They were a little more refined but still were able to bring down the house without even trying. Too bad they cant just get along

  • You are really good period and you are right Brewer has the power,I only wish they had the other third to make the real GRAND FUNK.Mark,Don & Mel were the real deal!!

Keep up the great drum playing brother.

You are so right GRAND FUNK were soooo underated, but we all know that they came along when we all needed them the most and you help to bring back some of the special element, thanks!

  • DAMN! rock on brother!

  • I would like to listen from you play "Burn" (studio version) from Deep purple and the solos of Paice from "made in japan" and "california jam"...don brewe is an excellent drummer but I think paice is the greatest...

  • another great song By the all american band Grand Funk you should try one with Shinin On one of my Favorite songs

  • Don played this when I saw them July 22nd. it was amazing.

  • I know - he's like 60 something and has so much energy - an amazing dude - Hope I'm still doing this at 60

  • Hehe yeah. I think he just keeps getting better. I was wearing the GFR self titled album shirt, Mel smiled at me (I think he did, I was front row) . I almost got Don's stick also.

  • I dont care whatever any of these people like or dislike, let's see them post a video as good as this one on the amazing skills of Don Brewer.I saw them yrs. back and was blown away by Brewers solo on this song....everything from using his head as a drum to just awesome power.

And of course who could forget that scream!!

He also had half the set the your playin' with, but who care bro you are really good and I have really enjoyed watching you play to my favorite drummer.Great work!

  • Thanks man - Im just trying to imitate him - he is such an underrated drummer. More power and soul than most. My Fav.

  • but great job !

  • i dont like the sound of ur bass drum

  • yeah i dont either its from a different type see like a metal black nob

  • your amazing at those drums keep up the great work

  • Thank you so much. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

  • Amazing!

  • Thank you -

  • You followed it to the teeth. Must have taken a lot of practice.

  • Very cool. Is that a HD16 in the background?

  • Yes it is

  • I have the same hat.

  • Ha ha - Mine was a gift from the wife!

  • Birthday present from my mother. I also got Buddy Rich sticks. Best sticks I've ever used.

  • Joey, is that you? Absolutely amazing! I was wondering what happened to you when I discovered your other channel shut down. I saw your reference to the YouTube Police. I guess they yanked alot of your Genesis videos? They pulled my ELP down. Glad to see you're back with a vengeance! VERY professional look and sound, I might add as well. Excellent work! I just subscribed again! 5 stars for sure! Off to check out your other videos! Dave.

  • I['ve been at it for 43 years and we did just about every GFR song in the late 60's and 70's. Damn, my friend, you are an inspiration. Gonna send off an email with this link to Don. He'll be astounded! Excellent!

    Paul

  • I Hope he gets it - it would be nice to actually hear from him - although I met him a few times, It was before i posted this video. Thanks again

  • Hit for hit, you got it perfect!! Amazing!! I wonder if Don Brewer has ever seen this?? He would be amazed!! You could be in a GFRR tribute band!! :-)

  • Don't know - It would be nice to get a call one day though

  • Absolutely friggen incredible. Great job on this great GFRR tune. Bravo !!!!

  • OMFG! Bro You Killed it 5\5 no way this is like 10\10

  • Mel Schacher turned me from playing guitar to bass in 1969. I was absolutely locked into every beat of Don Brewer's drums. Hearing you play so remarkably perfect just gives me a blue-veiner.

Thanks for doing that so well!

  • Thanks - Don is what got me started too, Are you still playing bass?

  • Awesome, as always...you never disappoint. Absolutely amazing!

  • Jesus christ, when i was a little boy, it was amazing, self trying to drum on a pillow whit this song, i was 15 years old and now a see this. great job.

  • Just fantastic !! How do you remember it all ? Thanks for all the work you put into your videos for us mere mortals. You're terrific to watch.

  • Thank you - There is a lot of work that goes into these.Comments like yours make it worth the effort. I don't know how I remember all of this, I can't remember where I put my keys on a daily basis!

    Thanks again

  • Always look forward to these vids! Enjoyed very much:)

  • BRILLIANT!!! 5 stars. One of your best videos. You are great!

  • DrumChannel, you are one talented person! Incredible!

  • Thank You - I really appreciate all the nice comments from you and everyone - that is what makes me want to do more of these. Thanks

  • On ur site, put Stairway to Heaven and Dazed and Confused. Hurry! I want to seem those bad!

  • That blew my cookies im a big Don Brewer fan and if your ever in Canada and you need a Job Look me up.Awesome really awesome.

  • OK - will do!

  • I know who I want to play on my

    Scully 280-8!

  • Do you actually have one of those? - 8-Track I take it. Boston Recorded their album on one of those 12 track machines. I don't think digital will ever match the warm sound of analog - ever. However it's a lot easier to edit on a digital box - Thank you -

  • Yes. It is an 8 channel one inch. It has a very distinc sound and you are welcome to it anyday. You are worth the tape cost. A roll of tape costs 100$ and you get ten minutes (about). So I think you are worth 10 buck a minute. I had the motor reconditioned and the heads resurfaced and aligned correctly. I bought it from Gretchen Wilsons first manager.

  • Dude....very nice. It's because of people like you that I don't even cover GFR....it just makes the rest of us look bad.

    Drum On.

  • F-A-N-T-A-S-T-I-C!!!

I think I've said it before, but, you have one of the world's best drummers in your pocket!

My hat is off to you buddy!

  • Thank You - I grew up on GFR. What a shame they did not make music all the way through the decades like the Stones. Life would have been different. Thanks again for the subscription - Love your channel

  • Let me repeat one very famous shout: ALLLLRIGGGGHHHHHTTTTTT!!!! Way to go DRUMCHANNEL. this is indeed a classic and you nailed it.!! Your website is rocking. Keep it up!!

  • Thank you so much - glad you are enjoying this. Thank you

  • I saw GF's first real gig at the Texas International Pop festival and they kicked ass all 3 days. Almost the same line up as Woodstock 2 weeks later with another new band called Led Zepplin!!

  • ...and you did it all without an Afro banging on the kit! Just kidding...

I'm very impressed you kick booty !

Hey, if Mark Farner ever needs a drummer...you in? Actually H-Bomb [Hubert Crawford] is excellent too!

This is so fine to watch. Much respect

  • I was almost gonna wear an afro for this one!..It would have been funny! Thanks

  • Nice job man! The editing was darn cool too!
