Yoshinoya isn't the best Beef Bowl place, it's just the most well known. I can't think of the chain we go to, but it's cheaper and more options. It's one of those vending machine ticket places. In any case, if you want Japanese fast food, there's also Hotto Motto. The cheapest fast food meals you can find in Japan are small beef bowls at various Gyuudon places and nori bento from Hotto Motto. Also, Ramen may be from China, but Japan put its signature on it, just like the US did with Pizza.

Gryudon beef is not fried but simmered, so much fat of the beef has gone away.

I feel better after eating gyudon than McDonald's.

If you come to Japan, remember Japanese burger chain MOS Burger as well as gyudon chains. MOS serves fresh burger containing many vegetables, and French fries which has real poteto taste.

@michikaj The strange ingredient used is cow meat. Cow meat comes from dairy cows that no longer produce milk that are then slaughtered for you to eat in things like this and Mexican food. It has absolutely no taste or flavor and is extremely tough.That being said it is extremely cheap and can be made to taste good. But after seeing what we have to do at our restaurant to make this stuff edible I would have a hard time feeding it to my dog.

We Asians always consider Yoshinoya to be a 'healthy' fast food when compared to American fast food such as McDonalds / Burger King...simply because it looks more 'wholesome' (rice, real beef, stock, pickled ginger)...pretty shocked when a Caucasian (Busankevin) mentioned that Yoshinoya's gyudon is unhealthy. I'm not sure how true is this - perhaps an experienced nutritionist can tell us how healthy / unhealthy gyudon is? I still think that Yoshinoya is much healthier than American junk food..
