@jdempsey1919 Its not standardized Inosanto never does that he always evolves it, thats why he has so many damn instructorships in so many arts in FMA he has so many instructorships under so many forms of Kali under so many instructors because he wants to keep learning even at 74, look up one of his videos were he's teaching he moves as though he was a 20 year old in his prime. dont judge the man unless you know the man
If anyone is in charge of JKD or anything of JKD it would be Inosanto at least in the USA thus it shouldnt be in chaos. He's a Sifu, Guru, Sigung, Sensei, and probably has other titles, Sifu-jkd and wing chun, Sigung-silat, Sensei-brazilian jiujitsu, guru-filipino martial arts, etc etc he's also a savatour in savate and an ajarn in muay thai. His students are guys like Erik Paulson, Rick Faye, Dog Brother Marc Denny, etc etc.
just to clear things up a bit.jkd is not a style.its a philosophy.jun fan gung fu is what bruce lee did, this is the style, jkd is the philosophy he followed.
I believe Bruce Lee said this to Black Belt Magazine "Let it be understood once and for all that I have NOT invented a new style, composite or modification. I have in no way set Jeet Kune Do within a distinct form governed by laws that distinguish it from 'this' style or 'that' method. On the contrary, I hope to free my comrades from bondage to styles, patterns and doctrines".
@tyronebiggimsh Its called history its what intelligent people like to listen to. you probably flunked out of elementary school and every level since didnt you?
absolutely, the BLF is trying to make sort out the chaos if agree or disagree with their methods thats fine, I just wanted to point out your portrayal of Teri Tom was inaccurate.
I disagree, from what I know Teri is researching ground fighting, a key element that I believe is missing from JKD, something that would have been researched much more in depth had Bruce Lee not died. She has said herself that anything that she does in this art will not be under the JKD banner.
Bruce Lee said"Your Jeet Kune Do will not be My Jeet Kune Do" We all have our own JKD, I may never beleave in what Dan said that JKD and concepts are the same, I've been trained in both and I still don't like concepts "BUT" I know that every art has something to offer, Concepts is not for me but someone it's for. Ted Wong and Jessie Glover are the primary Instructores I work with the most. I just hope one day concepts and Jun Fan will unite and keep the name JKD and Bruce Lee alive forever.
Provided the confusion is cleared they will. But Dan himself says you need to learn the jun fan method in order to do the concepts approach, yet most instructors will just teach the concepts
True, On concepts and I do understand the concepts, Jessie Glover taught me Jun Fan,BUT, I just don't like it, So many Philosophys in the Tao of JKD don't match with concepts to me. But as I said Your's ain't mine and mine ain't yours. I don't fus or bicker or try to palitic JKD or how others learn As long as they are JKD not some want to be more power to ya. Hey Let keep JKD and SiJo Bruce Lee's Name Alive!
I'm unsure what instructors don't teach Jun Fan but I think that's a mistake. In my own training I had to go through Jun Fan Kickboxing, Jun Fan Gung Fu, then it all comes together under BL's JKD guidelines. Although training may never end the last stage is where it's at. It's where you put everything you've learned to the test and you really see what the man was talking about.
I agree with almost everthing you gentilmen are saying, But to say one thing, Dan was not the only 3rd rank, Taky Kimura wasalso Bruce Lee's high rank, And he was as close of a friend you can get, Bruce's Best man at his wedding.
But, also, Sir Inosanto did make his own path may not be Bruce's but his own. Some students just starting, High minded may say Dan is wrong or some praise him as god" I know some that do" I used to be one that said he was wrong, But who am I to say any thing.
I know yousaid this a while back but I see that perhaps you have been misinformed. Dan Inosanto was and still is the only 3rd rank in JKD given directly from Bruce. Taky Kimura is indeed Dan's senior but only in Jun Fan Gung Fu. Dan admits to that. Bottom line is those are all great instructors because of who taught them. It really shouldn't matter but I thought I'd clear that up.
True but Dan clearly states that he was on his own path which Bruce Lee had warned him to make sure it was for proper reasons. Where as Ted Wong came to Bruce Lee with "an empty cup" he had not trained in any martial arts.
Yes true but view the Dan Insanto interview part 2 on my channel, Dan explains it all and he was there and knew Bruce personally, so who cares what others say they wasn't there nor did they know Bruce personally.
I'm with that. I like the way Dan explains JKD. He seems to have a beat on it that no one else does. It seems to me that JKD is a group of principals, not a specific method. And I think I'm pretty objective considering I don't practice or teach JKD.
Exactly my point Jkd is not a style you learn certain things then grow from there, go by your individual back ground/perspective, and Bruce expressed to Dan what he did and didn't like about Escrima so Bruce never said he hated he just believed in taking what is useful out of different arts.
Whats interesting though is that Ted Wong was the only student that had no martial art background when he came to Bruce Lee for training, all the others did.
good stuff larsson; clears up a lot - especially, hopefully to people who think you *must* do wing chun etc. to do *jeet kune do* as dan says "researching different arts and taking their essence" i dislike the "jeet kune do nucleus"; i appreicate their wish to *cyrstalise* ; P the exact art bruce *himself* carried out . . . however it was not bruce's philosophy to have each student do *bruce's* interpretation of jeet kune do; rather it is apt to take their individual perspective/background . . .
and develop their fighting style/life style from their on - obv. keeping to some obvious "rules" of combat, to remain fluid like water and so forth - to maintain softness and hardness: and all these methods that bruce himself knew *past masters* had . . . which made them masters.
not their exact movements and "moves" that each generation should carry out . . . this is just foolish.
There are some followers that seem to crystalize the art, but when you see people like Tommy Carruthers, whom are continuously improving themselves, fine tuning, cutting away I believe this is where Bruce Lee was really heading.
You do not need to learn 100 different techniques 5 different arts, this will only hinder your mind. As Bruce Lee said theres only 2 punches and 2 kicks the rest are just variations, and there are only 5 possible ways a human being can attack its all biomechanics
So its important when researching other arts, to look at the science and the principles outlined. Its not something I can do, but from what I've learnt in JKD you can really tell the difference most times. Bruce Lee was very much a scientist. A very smart guy!
i agree totally with this, if you think you are having difficulty larsson - you should check out some *systema* stuff, as it is very much "essence" of fighting; i will send you a message a good site; with free training articles that stimulate the science/spiritual side of fighting greatly.
i agree completely on this - though again; it depends upon a person's preference - i have always been good at "whip-power"/fa jing, as it is known in southern circles; so i have added to this, by making the basis of my attacks as praying mantis style [which concentrates on using "rib-bone power" to whip out punches by opening and closing the rib-cage and dislocating(controlled) the shoulders] which i feel compliments my nature.
it would be un-wise for me to get caught up in the seeming . . .
complexity of wing chun - as i feel the attacks and such are stale; they mess around too much with blocking, then attacking - except for the highest state of pratcise, whereby there is simultaneous strike and defense with one arm [which bruce covers in his self-defense and other Fighting Methods book series] so on this line - i have gone for praying mantis, as it is both attack/defense and as straight a line as possible . . . designed to destroy defenses and strike without withdrawing the arm.
I believe in Bruce Lee's original methods, I understand why he used wing chun, fencing and boxing to develop JKD. Research is one thing, being able to cut away your tools is another its easy to fall in love with an art and forget the whole purpose of JKD. Thats why I believe Concepts and Original see it so differently. Bruce Lee as Dan says did warn him about the motives to research other arts, I dont have part 2 so im not sure how that question ended.
i fall in love with my own expression - if you look into bruce's reading stuff; you will see a similar love of "the experience" . . . check out some of jiddu krishnamurti's books/there is a free web log of his writings; this as well as taoism/lao-tzu and zhunagzi influenced bruce's mind greatly, i believe.
i use for instance praying mantis; instead of wing chun - to close gaps; as i see that i have difficulty in closing a gap and retaining power [in a punching sense] others may think different.

I did, however, train at Dan's school in Culver City and Marina Del Rey. I also trained at Richard Bistillo's in Torrance, and loved it.

Bruce Lee demanded that all his schools be closed because he didn't like the way things were being taught obviously.
