@JustinHatesPie Thanks for the suggestion but all you are doing there is adding a still image for a LONG time at the end of your video and hoping you'll have that image available to use as the thumbnail... that trick has been around a long time. It does work ;-) (usually) but makes for a LONG video, which by itself makes people not want to watch it.
@JustinHatesPie Well I'll B! - That's what I get for not watching all of your video showing what you do. The YouTube police don't lop off that thumbnail image even after you go back an edit it out? Wow... I'll have to check that out.
@JustinHatesPie If I can make this idea work consistently then I'll be sure to give you credit. I'll assume you need to set the thumbnail, then do the trim. What if you trim off all the still image at the end? Do you still get to keep the TN?
@JustinHatesPie Hey Justin, I tried to message you on YouTube but it would not work. When I give you credit for this method (after I check it out) I wanted to mention how old you were (amazing xx-year old kid discovers....) Please reply here or send me a message via my channel on YT with your age.
@JustinHatesPie Looks like the last way I tried to reply from Mobile YouTube did not work... so NO giving your age is NOT mandatory... just thought it would add to the impressiveness of your tip.
@JustinHatesPie Justin, Which channel & which video do you want me to refer to when I give you credit... choose 1 please. Message me the answer in YouTube. Send the Channel Name & the YouTube URL in the message.
Thanks but that does not work anymore (25%, 50% & 75% no longer work). It changed in Dec 2008 so any video you see prior to that time would work that way... but alas no longer. That's why I've tried so hard to crack the new code.
How does Shaytards do it? In any long comment list you see the frames at 25%, 50% and 75% but like you say those don't work anymore. The thumbnail isn't any of those three frames.
Shaytards has control of the thumbnail positions because Shaytards is a PARTNER. YouTube Partners have different options for choosing thumbnails. The rest of us have to struggle with figuring it out.
Other videos that have specific thumbnails in those positions are most likely older videos posted before Dec 3, 2008 (when the rules changed).
Ive cracked the code. I am almost positive I have tested it 5 times now and it works every time I will make a video and put it up on my site and if it works the formula will be there
Everyone thinks its random but its not. It has everything to do with the size not lenght of the video. Ive cracked it. Check out my last post. Ive got it down to 1 frame accuracy so now you can put your thumbnail as something that really doesnt appear in the video.
Got it... You put a still shot for a long time at the end of your videos to grab that as a thumbnail. That works if you don't mind your videos getting long just to grab the TN. My trick is to put very short Stills in precise locations to get the TN image you want.
We're still working on it, but it is starting to cost me more money (since I'm paying others to use their higher-end editing programs)...no repeatable luck yet - got it figured out for some other hosting sites however. (see: video thumbnail trick)
Thanks for your kind wishes. I am still working on it, yet I have had to hire out some of the work since some of my theories are too nerdy for my skills at this time. If I figure it out, I'll be sure to let others know it can be done!
Thanks for posting this video and the info in the description to the right. I clicked on your linked page and saw the research results on how to snag all 3 YouTube thumbnail spots now that the methodology has changed. You are right, the old way of 25/50/75 does not work anymore--I've tried :-(
I have not seen anyone else show exactly how to do this (since it changed in December 2008). Good Job!
Here is a new easier way that works! :) /watch?v=9rhlIc4aatM Sub and Like my videos and channels for my tips, tutorials, and tricks :D

@VideoLeadsOnline But as soon as I get the thumbnail, I go to enhancements to trim it so no one sees it and you will still have the thumbnail

2011 UPDATE:
Here is how you do it in 2011:
Tutorial:
When you have your final time on your video (In seconds), divide the time with one of these numbers:
1. 3.09597523
2. 2.85080773
3. 1.44869215
Why? Your video gets a thumbnail from 3 places, and this is where they will show up.
Example: My vid is 5:04:08 Thats 304,08 seconds divided by 3.09597523 = 98.2178401 <----- You but your thumbnail!

Best of luck figuring out a formula or calculation for this. I'd love to be able to do it!

Wait until they hire some Computer Scientist to make a code no one can break but a smart hacker.

so what if a video is 2min long?
there should be a table or calculator to fig this out.
