  • I am reading Dr. Lonnie Smith's book "How to play the Hammond B3 with your nose without dropping your turban" now.

I can't really play organ much, but I thought I'd start with the important bits.

  • the drummer looks slightly like Robert Fripp

  • If you like this drummer, look at dennis chambers. Danny burger is not bad but Dennis Chambers is god in relation to him :D (My opinion so please don't kill me for this comment ;) )

Jamie King Colton

  • I need the name of this trio. They are amazing,

  • @TRIFLETOX that's not an epiphone dot. That's a guild guitar.

  • OMG I HAVE THE SAME EPIPHONE 335 DOT GUITAR!!!!!!!!

  • @TRIFLETOX ....and does that make you play as good?...nope, I thought not...far far too much guitar worship and not enough appreciation for the hard work and talent of good players.....thats my cheery uplifting comment of the day!...

  • The guitar player looks like he has the shock of his life at 1:48.

  • @Witloofboer the guitarist has seen it all before - this band have played together for a long time now.

  • LOL Thats great fun!!!!

  • That is proper bollywood music!

  • @nazjazzz what?? You need to explain that to me

  • Comment removed

  • @gnrfanatic141414

He appears to jam something in to stick the key down to maintain that high note, he removes it a 1:34

  • @JimmyJillikers it's a piece of cardboard - great trick

  • @gnrfanatic141414 He puts a little bit of cardboard between the notes to jam a key down, so that he can play chords with both hands on the bottom keyboard whilst that note is still playing.

  • How can people dislike this???

  • I love the way he combines playing and organ maintenance all in one performance!

  • be sure to check the organ for any bombs

  • @guitardog0 Was that supposed to be funny? Either way, you are an asshole.

  • @guitardog0 wow somebody's a racist little faggot

  • danny burger on the drums

  • @sj420 and brilliant he is too. This video introduced me to his playing and I still love watching it.

  • Seriously Cool!

  • happyness itself

  • I LOVE what he does with the bass pedals and playing with his tongue. Sooo groovy.

  • OMG WHO is that DRUMMER...his drumming is like sex LMAO

  • @DexChick90 His name is Danny Burger!

  • @DexChick90 music is better than sex.... I might sometimes argue.

  • @MrJbkendell lol! I got you

  • @DexChick90 Danny Burger

  • Dr. Smith is a gas!!! Reminds me of tenor saxophonist Lynn Hope.

  • Killer Dr. Lonnie solo on this tune. He's on The New Jazz Thing TONIGHT 6-8 PM PT Jazz 88.3 FM San Diego Webcast Jazz88.org!

  • Who is that drummer? his name?

  • @SkeggiaX Danny Burger, it say's it on the end of the video...

  • I got to see him live a few weeks ago at a jazz festival that my high school jazz band was performing at. He's one of the coolest guys you'll ever meet, and plus he did a two hour set and it was crazy!

  • ayepa y pu pora koa, ombopu kuaa ko lekaya í

  • I didn't know that the guys from India are playing blues. They are well known as a computer software developer gurus. Anyhow this is very cool...

  • Lonnie sure has some cats out there on bass and drum....

  • @kax61 Lonnie is playing the bass lines on his pedals, as he always has done. That's an electric guitar there with him.

  • Go Lonnie Go

  • nothin like a little rippin' on a b3

  • This is madness.....mad funky vibes

  • that nite he played my C3 and my 770 leslie,i made that piece of wood for him and attached it to the start switch with a piece of wire.he loved it and since then he took it along to all the other gigs.

in that nite i turned 50 and it was the best birthday party, one can ever wish to have.

  • @wolfmanhammond I've said it's a piece of cardboard elsewhere, thanks for clearing that up because there has been a lot of discussion.

  • So awesome!!!!

  • name of song please??

  • @1DjNewEra The Midnight Creeper

  • thnx

  • @1DjNewEra Midnight Creeper

  • as funky as things can get.....

  • leather

  • Anybody know what he's using to keep the high key depressed at 1:08?

  • looks like a piece of Cardboard. You know how you put something between keys to keep it down.

  • funk magic...

    it's probably a bent plectrum

  • i thought is was a piece of gum or somthing - but the more i looked it seemed like a bit of cloth or a broach... shaped something like a leaf

    see 1:29 and 1:30

  • @marantz79 I know that my organ player uses little rubber wedges that he has for tuning pianos

  • @TwoLevelBeats . Thanks everybody for all your help! I started using a bent piece of cardboard, and that works. But, when he pulls it out at 1:30 it looks like a bigger version of the peg on acoustic guitars. Thought maybe it was a standard thing.

    Thanks again!

  • That drummer is delivering those beats!!

  • CHAMPION

    unstoppable.

  • what a BEAST. playing the pedals with his hands.. classic Lonnie...

  • Comment removed

  • It's more like you accidently stumbled into this clip....looking for trouble....jazz has always dealt with lots of prejudice and will certainly overcome your comment. It's here to stay and won't go away.

  • Wow, I dig that drummer! He's like a funkyer Bonham!!

Who can tell us his name? Thanks!

  • you do us sikhs proud

  • Yeah....that drummer's snare drum is so high....I love it....wish more drummers would use it like that. He's turning it up real loud....wow! If you'd please excuse me...I'm goin' mental

  • love that drum! and some awesome groovin here!!

  • He wears a Turban because he is of the Sikh faith and it is mandatory for Sikh males to wear it to cover their uncut hair

  • Never mind the turban and the showmanship - for me, in years to come, Lonnie will always be remembered for being funky, but also being able to bleed life out of every single note in a tune. Few other electric keyboards can afford this type of feeling and expression than the B3, and nobody exploits it better than Dr Smith.

  • AMEN to that!!! He truly is one with the instrument...it comes alive at his touch!!!!

  • Awesome musicians! Dr. Lonnie is #1, the absolute best in Jazz Funk Soul organ! Check out his facebook group: "Dr. Lonnie Smith...Funkiest B3 Burner On The Planet!!!" I have his tour schedule and all the latest news!

  • What did he find under the organ.........funky

  • that drummer is funkin smokin 2:50

    (*insert bangin' double entendre*)

  • The turbanator!~doin' it....

  • My favorite! check out my Reuben Wilson cover with the Blue Bunny Quartet!

  • Great! At 1:50 when he gets down on the floor to play the foot pedals with his hands...the other musicians start looking a little worried.

Too funny, what a great player.

  • Cheerios, they know what he's doing - these four have played together loads in recent years. I think it just amuses them!

  • taking a fat nasty shit on joey defrancesco :)

  • Hahaha Dr Lonny Smith is Great what a style, what a humor! I love it!

  • oh my god!!! this is funkin me off! maaan! :D lonnie is maaaaaaad! :D gold!

  • Is this the gentleman also known as Lonnie Liston Smith?

  • No, a common mistake. Dr. Lonnie Smith and Lonnie Liston Smith are two different artists entirely.

  • Yezuur..

  • Yep!

  • wow.... is this lou donaldson's quartet? I need to get these guys on tape, that was really something

  • ya know, "they" say any music other that gospel on an organ comes from the devil

  • Check out his new album!!! "RISE UP!" Also, his facebook group: Dr. Lonnie Smith...Funkiest B3 Burner On The Planet!!! He IS the King of the B3!!!!

  • i saw lonnie smith backstage at jazz fest today. i didn't know who he was but i thought i had seen him somewhere before. He got in my grill while i was on the phone and asked if he could make a call to australia when i was done. I even took a picture for my friend and still didnt realize that he was a star, i thought he was a crazy old guy who had some sort of skills. then he got up on stage and played some delicious organ, AND started a shout at the end, i was amazed and officially a fan

  • This shit is unbelieveble!!! DAMN!! 2 hot!! original solo with tong-trics!! whoo-hoo it tickles my balls! i love this Doctor! Respect 2 Lonnie & Mcgriff!

  • great drummer :-)

  • The bass solo on the pedals...you gotta love it !

  • I've been sending this around like crazy. what a great clip. thanks for sharing!!!

  • Yeah!

My shivers got the shivers listening to this ;o)

Doc Lonnie and his band are really something else!

  • is it normal that I got shivers?

lol I already heard people talking about getting shivers, but this might be the actually first time I actually had them... I got them at 2:19 about...

  • I think, that the hammond sound could have some specific vibrations doing this, because the old mechanic versions produce also some random sound waves (it could have similar effects to body like some ethnic instruments such as tibetan bowls, but that`s just my opinion). I got shivers every time I listen to hammond organ, it is really magical instrument.

  • My three main instruments are the Piano, Guitar and Organ... I want a Baldwin, Gibson and Hammond...

  • sorry jazzytea but thats bollocks, its purely the sound of good funky funk that gives people shivers!

  • well Led Zep, gives me shivers now too...

  • Cool he stuck a ring thing into a key hole! Creative!

  • haha, looks like michael barrymore on drums... nice stuff though! lonnie is a true hero!

  • AMAIZING

  • A beautiful musician...a beautiful person!!! He gives his whole heart and soul to his music!

  • The most beautiful cat on the globe.

  • is dr. lonnie smith the same as lonnie smith and lonnie liston smith ? anybody pls?

  • no, it's not the same. Dr Lonnie smith is like 1 M times better

  • just to be clear, you mean DR. LONNIE SMITH and LONNIE SMITH (who also plays the hammond organ) is not the same guy? i know the turban is a give away, i just wasn't sure if maybe lonnie smith had an image change or something... thanks!!! i got hooked on DR.LONNIE SMITH when a friend recomended i buy his "boogaloo to beck" album!

  • Yes, I mean exactly that. Just look in wikipedia for "Lonnie Smith" and you'll see DR. lonnie smith and a nobodier called lonnie "whatever" smith. DR. is the god of jazz funk organ!

  • Lonnie Smith and Dr. Lonnie Smith are the same person. Lonnie Liston Smith is a different person who also plays organ.

  • Yeah ! Lonnie and the drummer is funky as hell. The guitarist has a nice sound but looks like an idiot.lol- btw I can play a better funk guitar ;-)

  • Does anyone know what model this guitar is?

    THX!

  • Good Job! |:>

    LGL

  • Incredible! Just the best!!

  • Makin' it so funky we can smell it!

  • I have hanmmond from 70s and the keys feels more like keaboard, but there is a little differense...THIS VIDEO IS BEST!

  • does somebody knows how the keys of a hammond feel? Is it more like a piano or a keyboard?

  • more like a keyboard...

we have an old Hammond M-2 in our studio...it's about 60 yrs old. still works and sounds great!

  • like a thick, sloppy keyboard. basically how funk should feel on your fingers.

  • Hot damn!

  • Oh my god, this has got to be Lonnie Liston Smith, the one and only. Go to emule and check it for "A Song For The Children" and see what his funk was like in the early 80ies...!!!!

  • Ah, no, I was mistaken. This is a different guy, but still he's got the vibes. Very nice!

  • that guy is the shit

  • No where talking organ solo!

  • wtf does that mean?

  • I've seen this soulful cat perform here in Harlem.

  • JOEY DEFRANCESCO...

    Listen to him.

  • I saw the Dr. & his trio this past Sunday in Chicago at the Jazz Showcase. And who should stroll in but Joey Defrancesco. Too bad he didn't join the Dr. to jam.

  • Talk about Joey on his own videos....This is Dr. Lonnie's House Bro...

  • @Dihelson JOEY DEFRANCESCO is the best! Dr. Smith is sloppy in his delivery .

  • @fabdjmagic - your sloppy is my epic.

  • @fabdjmagic Lonnie is getting on in years, he is entitled to be a little 'sloppy' here and there. He is still an awesome, funky entertainer. As for who is the best, I don't like those arguments - why can't we just enjoy the great music these guys all play without turning it into a competition?

  • He wears Indian clothes and a turban for the same reason he started calling himself "Dr.".... because he felt like it. It makes him unique - how many other people do you know that wear turbans just because??

  • actually he's from New York

  • he might be a sikh. you dont have to be indian to wear a turban. thats just racial stereotyping :)

  • Yeah, I was just talking. I really like his Organ playing!
