Never mind the turban and the showmanship - for me, in years to come, Lonnie will always be remembered for being funky, but also being able to bleed life out of every single note in a tune. Few other electric keyboards can afford this type of feeling and expression than the B3, and nobody exploits it better than Dr Smith.

i saw lonnie smith backstage at jazz fest today. i didn't know who he was but i thought i had seen him somewhere before. He got in my grill while i was on the phone and asked if he could make a call to australia when i was done. I even took a picture for my friend and still didnt realize that he was a star, i thought he was a crazy old guy who had some sort of skills. then he got up on stage and played some delicious organ, AND started a shout at the end, i was amazed and officially a fan

I think,that the hammond sound could have some specific vibrations doing this, because the old mechanic versions produce also some random sound waves (it could have similar effects to body like some ethnic instruments such as tibetan bowls,but that`s just my opinion).
