The "Reunion Tour" netted approx. $40+ million, after expenses. Yes, Paul (not Gene) kept the Band together in the 80's, but without Ace & Peter coming back, KISS would have gone down the toilet they were headed for.
Agreed with @MartinPurvis. Ace and Peter are two of my all time heros, so are paul gene and eric carr. But there was a point were Ace and Peter's addictions got out of hand, and peter had to be let go, otherwise KISS would have ended right then and there. And while Gene is monygrubbing, hes not as bad as most people make him out to be. KISS and KISS Army fans deserved the best, not a guy who was so stoned on stage that he could'nt play worth shit.
@kebkeb94 Peter didn't HAVE to be let go, Kiss could have got him cleaned up during their down time during 1981-1983. The band didn't even tour in 1981 or 1982.
@panchamkauns Peter did get cleaned up, though. It was Ace who never got it together, finally claiming bankruptcy in the early 1990's. Peter left Kiss, straightened out, and stayed that way.

I use to be pissed when Peter was fired and then Ace but it was for the best...If they both had issues with chemical drugs and drinking they were letting the others down in the band.
I don't believe Gene & Paul were wrong for firing Peter and Ace. Eric Carr was an excelent replacement, way better rock drummer. But Ace was hard to replace and I think the reason Gene & Paul went through a few to get it right. Ace was a fun guy.

@easy1026 Both Ace and Peter have admitted to taking drugs and drinking alcahol excessively back in the late 70's, and they have admitted that Peter was fired for his poor drumming skills towards the end of his role as drummer and Ace wasnt as good a player as he once was, often missing notes and delivering terrible performances. However that wasnt the only reason they left, both Ace and Peter were unhappy of the direction Kiss was taking with merchandising, music style etc.

Kiss was never the same after Peter and Ace's departure, but neither Peter nor Ace had a solo career that set the world on fire. The original band should have worked their problems out and stayed together, they would have done better music if they would have retained the idea of all four guys singing lead on Kiss albums, something that ended when Peter and Ace left, and was such a huge part of the Kiss sound.
@kissarmyquickpicks - KISS was really the brainchild of Gene and Paul's. Once they agreed to form a band, they set out to find a drummer and put an ad for a guitarist. Peter and Ace joined Gene and Paul's unnamed band. Because of the similar ethnic characteristics, there was a much better communication and closer friendship between G&P than with P&A, and this lead to future discord, bad business, personal and career decisions. In other words, 4 men who could not talk to each other very well.

So many people let their emotion destroy their logic. Peter and Ace were great... WERE great in the early days. Both got bored quickly. Both wanted more of a pie they did not create. KISS was, is and always be Gene and Paul.
Ace and Peter, though founding members of the band, were ALWAYS hired guns. Neither of them could stay sober enough to remove their heads from their asses and see what they were throwing away.

@TheTN24 I loved KISS when I was younger & still listen to them, but I have found Gene's endless merch whoring to be too much for me. You are right that Gene & Paul (more Paul) kept the band alive throughout the 80's (Gene was too busy trying to be an actor). But throughout all those concerts they played mostly Ace & Peter era tunes. Gene & Paul know that the people want the originals. The reunion was partly cuz they knew it would make big $, but also to get the rights to Ace's makeup.
I like all of them...I grew up with KISS. They're great. But it's true what Gene says at the end...(generally speaking)....'why let a couple of knuckleheads ruin it for everyone else)....Yes it's sad. But f*ck...you can't let go of your dreams. You gotta keep going, and that's what I admire about Gene and Paul. They made it...they created the dream...and are still going. Gene got in it for two reasons...women and money. He accomplished both many times over. He's said numerous times that their music is average or below average. He set out to do what he wanted...and he got it. Paul wanted to be heard, Ace wanted to play guitar and Peter just wanted to be in a band that was doing something worth while.
It's very very frustrating when you are working hard on something and someone that is supposed to be working on it with you fails to do so. You can only do it some many times until it gets old. All you want to do is get the job done. If you were a boss...how many times would you let your employee get away with not doing what they were supposed to be doing. It's all fun and games until the food is taken from your mouth.

Peter and Ace were also key signatures on Kiss' recording contract in fact when Ace quit in 1982, Paul and Gene had to renegotiate their record deal and had to do records for less money. I remember when I first got the "KISS Extreme Closeup" on vhs back in 1995... I was about 14 and was now in the beginnings of my first love in music... That was KISS. I must have watched it every single day for months non stop.. Got to the point that I could pretty much recite it all word for word!
Anyways I have always felt that this video was very well produced and still gives me goosebumps when I see parts like this clip of Peter leaving the band...

Drugs and alcohol are common problems, sometimes taken to the extreme, end in Death. Look at Steve Clark of Def Leppard. The rest of the guys are not happy that things came to that end. The "Reunion Tour" netted approx. $40+ million, after expenses. Yes, Paul (not Gene) kept the Band together in the 80's, but without Ace & Peter coming back, KISS would have gone down the toilet they were headed for.

Agreed with @MartinPurvis. Ace and Peter are two of my all time heros, so are paul gene and eric carr. But there was a point were Ace and Peter's addictions got out of hand, and peter had to be let go, otherwise KISS would have ended right then and there. And while Gene is monygrubbing, hes not as bad as most people make him out to be. KISS and KISS Army fans deserved the best, not a guy who was so stoned on stage that he could'nt play worth shit.

I use to be pissed when Peter was fired and then Ace but it was for the best...If they both had issues with chemical drugs and drinking they were letting the others down in the band.
I don't believe Gene & Paul were wrong for firing Peter and Ace. Eric Carr was an excelent replacement, way better rock drummer. But Ace was hard to replace and I think the reason Gene & Paul went through a few to get it right. Ace was a fun guy.
I don't agree with anyone else wearing the original make up...

That's why Eric and Tommy are The Cat and Space-man, respectively. They didn;t steal the personas. They are the property of KISS, since Ace and Peter sold the image/persona rights to Gene and Paul. @easy1026 Both Ace and Peter have admitted to taking drugs and drinking alcahol excessively back in the late 70's, and they have admitted that Peter was fired for his poor drumming skills towards the end of his role as drummer and Ace wasnt as good a player as he once was, often missing notes and delivering terrible performances. However that wasnt the only reason they left, both Ace and Peter were unhappy of the direction Kiss was taking with merchandising, music style etc.

Kiss was never the same after Peter and Ace's departure, but neither Peter nor Ace had a solo career that set the world on fire. The original band should have worked their problems out and stayed together, they would have done better music if they would have retained the idea of all four guys singing lead on Kiss albums, something that ended when Peter and Ace left, and was such a huge part of the Kiss sound.

@kissarmyquickpicks - KISS was really the brainchild of Gene and Paul's. Once they agreed to form a band, they set out to find a drummer and put an ad for a guitarist. Peter and Ace joined Gene and Paul's unnamed band. Because of the similar ethnic characteristics, there was a much better communication and closer friendship between G&P than with P&A, and this lead to future discord, bad business, personal and career decisions. In other words, 4 men who could not talk to each other very well.

Together, Paul, Gene, Peter and Ace became Kiss. There was no such thing as Kiss when Peter met Paul and Gene. Kiss was really the brainchild of not only the members in the band, but Bill Aucoin, Sean Delaney and Neil Bogart as well.

So many people let their emotion destroy their logic. Peter and Ace were great... WERE great in the early days. Both got bored quickly. Both wanted more of a pie they did not create. KISS was, is and always be Gene and Paul.
Ace and Peter, though founding members of the band, were ALWAYS hired guns. Neither of them could stay sober enough to remove their heads from their asses and see what they were throwing away.
I honor and salute both Ace and Peter but both are truly pathetic individuals.

Peter remained a profit sharing member for 6 months after he left as did Ace for even longer. Upon their return sure, they were hired guns as they should have been. Fans that get mad at that need to focus their anger on Ace and Peter afterall they are the ones that screwed up. No Paul and Gene no Kiss for 30+ years.

You are right that Gene & Paul (more Paul) kept the band alive throughout the 80's (Gene was too busy trying to be an actor). But throughout all those concerts they played mostly Ace & Peter era tunes. Gene & Paul know that the people want the originals. The reunion was partly cuz they knew it would make big $, but also to get the rights to Ace's makeup.

Gene got in it for two reasons...women and money. He accomplished both many times over. He's said numerous times that their music is average or below average. He set out to do what he wanted...and he got it. Paul wanted to be heard, Ace wanted to play guitar and Peter just wanted to be in a band that was doing something worth while.

Peter and Ace were also key signatures on Kiss' recording contract in fact when Ace quit in 1982, Paul and Gene had to renegotiate their record deal and had to do records for less money. I remember when I first got the "KISS Extreme Closeup" on vhs back in 1995... I was about 14 and was now in the beginnings of my first love in music... That was KISS. I must have watched it every single day for months non stop.. Got to the point that I could pretty much recite it all word for word!
Anyways I have always felt that this video was very well produced and still gives me goosebumps when I see parts like this clip of Peter leaving the band...

ACE is a guitar ICON! Gene will be remembered as a businessman. Once ACE Left that was it! GENE and Paul would have gotten more respect if they just started a new band.

Well gene says the band is a team. Dosn't team members help eatchother out? Meaby gene and paul could have helped ace and criss with their "destructive behavior" rather than kick them out of the band.

@swedo88 Paul said the band (KISS or any other) is like a 4-way marriage. that is bound to cause some issue eventually. Drugs and alcohol are common problems, sometimes taken to the extreme, end in Death. Look at Steve Clark of Def Leppard. The rest of the guys are not happy that things came to that end. But they soldier on

@rickyfalcon I don't smoke nothing! I am basically of the school of thought that Peter and Gene deserve the right to keep the band going, and Paul's always been a good spokesman for the band. For Gene, his message is to strive to reach your dreams, to make the impossible happen. That's a tall order, but he got the fame from that way of thinking and going for it. Good luck to Peter, Ace, and all!

@DamienCarrass I'm a major 70s fan with proof of such matters. I respect them for having to make the tough choice, it has nothing to do with the fans but who a band copes as a unit of members, that's as blunt as it gets, we as fans don't have a choice. I am deeply sad about it, but se have no say

Gene is a self rightious jew bastard...........yes JEW bastard. No father there. And yes probably the key to why KISS broke up, also because Paul had NO balls to help keep the band together from Genes influence. Peter and Ace were helpless and as the band grew so did the greed.......I was a major kiss fan in my youth, I am now discoverying the greed and differeneces that ocured that corrupted a once truly great band. Sad but true..........prove me wrong if you can.

@scotjay - With the way Simmons is about money and the way record royalties work do think Simmons would give either of the other two guys a chance to put in as many songs as they (Ace and Peter) would have wanted to? If he wouldn't pay Peter what he wanted to keep him on as the drummer after they got back together what makes you think he'd go.... Ok, I have no problem handing over X amount of dollars to Ace or Peter in song royalties that could of been mine if I just used my songs.

Do you honestly believe in 30 whatever years Gene and Paul wrote 90% of KISS songs because Ace and Peter didn't HAVE any to add? Frehley's solo album kicked the crap out of 1/2 the KISS albums to that point. Do you think it's because in 30 years he didn't write any?

Go on ebay, look under KISS, what's there? Baby onesies with "Future KISS Roadie" written across it, pathetic looking makeup kits, fuzzy golf club covers, KISS pool cues what the hell is this shit? Everything they do is dependent on the past. Stanley may have energy, as far as vocals go that's about all he's got.
