@foxtrotalex Thank you very, very much for the information, I appreciate it! It's always awesome to learn about guitars from other parts of the world. I am looking up Rash guitars right now! Thank you!!! Much love from California!!!
marco doesnt sound like petrucci, but he does have a similar style id say he plays kind of more along the lines of satriani but doesnt sound like him,he definantley has his own sound.
Thank you! Petrucci,Vai,Timmons,Satch...All of these guys got their styles from somewhere. Some of you guys act like Marco got up one day and just decided he'd play like that. You know who much much music this guy is resposible for? This IS Marco's style. People in general act like seccussful people just get up and do it. NO.
@freakguitar1 nah i get your point TOTALLY and i agree with you, i dont think you should take my comment very very serious : )
i just meant that if you know sfogli a little bit you know he likes petrucci and timmons and then you can very easily hear their style out of sfogli`s. no offense man, no offense : )
Sense of rythem is deffinatly dreamtheater influenced. Andromeda is made up of like 4/4 7/4 and 13/8 , Even still hurts has different time sigs. His music is fun to try and tap your foot to makes you feel like a drummer almost, counting in your head.
people need to stop comparing Marco to Pretrucci, they are both amazing but they sound nothing alike!!!!!! People that compare the two probably compare Vai and Satriani, or Gilbert and Buckethead too
Petrucci is a is an amazing guitar player, Marco is a tasteful and technical master, Govan is a genius. I enjoy all three, each unique, love marcos CD to death
they're both good....it's kind of like "what do I want to listen to today?" a bunch of complicated riffs with all around incredible musical talent? or a more natural composition focused on a great sounding guitar and guitarist? they both have their place in learning AND listening....
one of the best, if not the best, new sort of under the radar shredders, i can't wait to see what this guy continues doing, he's incredible and so melodic as well.
In my opinion, Petrucci is good, but I think Marco is better musically, and has more elegance in his playing. Some of the stuff Marco does just blows my mind. Plus, his solo album is incredible!
Alright, well lets think about it this way. Say he did "copy Petrucci", how about you go out and learn how to play exactly like Petrucci, and find out how much fuckin skill it needs to play a LICK from that guy. Regardless if this Marco is extremely influenced by Petrucci, it takes a mad amount of skill to replicate any such melodies from him. Argument over
I agree on all counts, whoever say that he copied Petrucci is really narrow-minded, just as good as saying that everybody who play blues has copied from BB King, Albert King, etc
@stratspider230 agree, Marco is amazing. But on the same subject, i actually think hes more influenced by Andy Timmons, like in tone, licks, composition (For example this song has the starting riff really similar to "Hiroshima"), GEAR., and so on... anyway, if in any way hes a guitar virtuoso mime (which he isnt) hes probably the best out there...
@stratspider230 Read in one of James LaBrie's interviews that Marco is heavily influenced by John Petrucci. But also said that their musical approach is totally different. On the new JL album, Marco had a lot of input as to how the songs will groove best with certain riffs and moods. Plus, according to JL, Marco can go straight to the stage without warm-ups! Petrucci takes about 30 minutes of warm-ups before hitting the stage. Don't get me wrong, I'm a JP fan since '94 but like Marco too.
@hyde78chan maybe its because JP used to warm up everytime before hitting the stage, that makes him comfortable :) besides they're both among the Best in the Guitar World :)
@lugajohnpaul Well, yeah exactly my point. Some people need to do things to be able to accomplish other things. And some people go straight ahead. In short, people are different. It doesn't make sense that people here are so narrow minded, Before Petrucci, There was Al Di Meola, Steve Morse, and Yngwie Malmsteen doing all this speed picking technique. Would you say Petrucci is a copycat of those guys?
@hyde78chan of course not :) everybody got his own style, having an influence doesn't mean you're a copycat. So if Marco is influenced by John, what's the big deal right? you know all this person talking about who's better doesn't really appreciate music, they just like being amazed. :p Well, that's just my opinion :) hehe..
@lugajohnpaul Yeah, everybody is influenced by other musicians from the start. Even the great composers like Mozart and Beethoven were influenced by musicians who came before them. Kids today tend to measure things by the number of notes played and the speed. B.B. doesn't need that many notes to make a statement. In fact he is straightforward.
You envious moronic sad people , exactly how many of you played on James La Brie's solo album ? I didn't think so...give the guy a break, regardless of his influences and whoever he might resemble as a guitarist he has more range, melodic sense, taste and skill than 99.9% of us so shut the fuck up please.
Well..I hate to tell You Guys This....BUt He still better than all of us...And I agree he sounds a lot like JP...But he is not a "rip off"....HE IS A great Gutar Player and you can learn a lot from Him..
Original doesn't mean better.I never liked Petrucci's playing, but I love Marco's playing, and no it's not because I am Italian too,lol
Looking just at the technique or the sound is not good enough here.Marco's solos just FLOW in way that Petrucci's solos don't. Petrucci is more intellect-oriented, and it SOUNDS like so. Marco's playing has a very different energy. Besides, Petrucci can't play fusion, Marco can. He's more versatile. The Petrucci influences are obvious, but he's no bland rip off
well he grew up listening to images and words...petrucci is a very big influence in his life but saying he sounds better than petrucci.. is a bit far fetched. he built this guy
doesn't realise he's switching the *sigh* I have no guitar knowledge, but I can CLEARLY see the button next to the whammy which is pushes from time to time..

@guitarman069 Coincidentally, they all have Italian heritage. It still puzzles me to this day why Italian musicians in general are so musical and expressive... that is putting aside the physical aspects of playing.
sfogli is amazing...and he doesn't copy so much as people say....listen with attention his solo album...and pay attention to his playing, also in this video...he has an unbelievable sense of time...also in the difficult part he's always in time...and doing this in a live performance it's not too easy
i tend to agree, maybe he's not the most original guitarist on earth. his style kinda similar to petrucci mixed with timmons, but he has added his own style and approach of phrasing and composing imho. he's damn amazing. this song too, has amazing feeling. i got the cd n the whole entire cd just blown me away.
Well maybe on the Elements of Persuasion album, but he definitely changed his sound on his solo album, although there was a few songs with some Petrucci sound to them, he's still amazing non the less.
ok....when u compare u start to think the difference and especially when they are playing almost the same style..u kinda wonder who he got it from? original or not and who does it sound like...thats one mistake musicians make these days is copy other artist...
I love DT but IMO Petrucci is an amazing composer and a very good base guitar player, but as a solo guitarrist he sux, he plays 3~4 notes 12times in a second and ppl call it a solo.
Petrucci Will never play like Satriani, Vai or Paul Gilbert.
i disagree, imo petrucci is a great solo guitarist too, tho i agree that vai or satriani are more superior in instrumental music genre but sux is a powerful word dude, if he sux he wouldnt be invited to G3. Petrucci can throw tasty licks and solos too, not as often as andy timmons, but listen to budokan hollow years extended solo, or songs like lost without you for example, and under a glass moon solo is one the best prog rock solos imo.
petrucci is more shreddish (is this a word) its a matter of taste, for me, i think he doesnt overdo it, but your entitled to your opinion. Marco's playing more tasty coz he draws influence from Timmons, i can hear exact Timmons licks in his playing. However, they are different, i like apples as much as i like oranges but that's just me ;)
IMO even if it has some resemblance to other guitar players he is influenzed by I can still hear MARCO...you can feel it in his playing.. iam sure when he is playing he is not thinking "OK, now its time to play like satriani" :P lol...but YES we still love Marco ;)
His tone does stand out from other players quite a bit, i mean, i could probably tell the difference, when hes hitting one of his harmonics or doing one of those melodic lead lines.
His guitar reminds me a bit of my first custom, haha. What a FANTASTIC player. Top kudos to him and Andy Timmons and Guthrie Govan and co., keeping instrumental rock interesting and melodic!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
no he's not. he will never be better than john petrucci. He's unsurpassable by another human being. His stuff is alot more melodic than this if you listen to his solo stuff.
You all have it wrong, when I listen to this guy, I hear Marco Sfogli BIGTIME in his playing. I don't give a damn what progressive trolls may have influenced him, he has his own thing going that's all that matters.

Nolituh ure an idiot, sfogli is amazing, but he is not as good as petrucci. And plus i have sfogli's solo albuma nd he copies petrucci so much.
ProJoe559 3 years ago
Well maybe on the Elements of Persuasion album, but he definitely changed his sound on his solo album, although there was a few songs with some Petrucci sound to them, he's still amazing non the less.
xJPM100x 3 years ago
yah he is im not saying his not, his amazing, but not better then petrucci.
ProJoe559 3 years ago
why do you compare them so much, i believe that when someone starts comparing musicians, he starts getting a bit retarded... muhahaha
locobeis 3 years ago
ok....when u compare u start to think the difference and especially when they are playing almost the same style..u kinda wonder who he got it from? original or not and who does it sound like...thats one mistake musicians make these days is copy other artist...

As Labrie said, Marco blows people minds away.
XD

Marco Pwns Petrucci Ass very bad.
I love DT but IMO Petrucci is an amazing composer and a very good base guitar player, but as a solo guitarrist he sux, he plays 3~4 notes 12times in a second and ppl call it a solo.
Petrucci Will never play like Satriani, Vai or Paul Gilbert.
nolituh 3 years ago
i disagree, imo petrucci is a great solo guitarist too, tho i agree that vai or satriani are more superior in instrumental music genre but sux is a powerful word dude, if he sux he wouldnt be invited to G3.

However, they are different, i like apples as much as i like oranges but that's just me ;)

yeah, you're a retard...

super player but every tune on the album has someone elses stamp on it. satriani, beck and di meola for example. Very hard to create your own style.

You forgot the Petrucci and Guthrie Govan rip-offs, haha. But we still love Marco ;)

IMO even if it has some resemblance to other guitar players he is influenzed by I can still hear MARCO...you can feel it in his playing.. iam sure when he is playing he is not thinking "OK, now its time to play like satriani" :P lol...but YES we still love Marco ;)
shredfactor7 3 years ago
Yeah i mean, it is still Marco's signature tone and playing
twooos 3 years ago
Hell no it isnt - the tone isnt nothing new. But absolutely admirable playing, yes :)
WheresTheSoul 3 years ago
His tone does stand out from other players quite a bit, i mean, i could probably tell the difference, when hes hitting one of his harmonics or doing one of those melodic lead lines.

this is my favourite song from his album. His tone is so godlike!!!!! I could listen to it all day.

I dont like how this guy is totally not unique or innovative. Great composer and player though.

Marco has stole the throne in my fav guitarists by light years!!!

His guitar reminds me a bit of my first custom, haha. What a FANTASTIC player. Top kudos to him and Andy Timmons and Guthrie Govan and co., keeping instrumental rock interesting and melodic!

I'm starting to have higher hopes on Marco than DT. Marco's work on Elements of Persuasion and on his solo album > past 2 DT albums. MY OPINION
Tuze 3 years ago
i think he is now better than Petrucci himself, much more melodic...and he is only getting better

This comment has received too many negative votes show
no he's not. he will never be better than john petrucci. He's unsurpassable by another human being. His stuff is alot more melodic than this if you listen to his solo stuff.
